Why?
Why not?
I know most of you will try to play the "look at the rings" card. But keep in mind that if Garnett had the same role players and coaching staff that Duncan has been fortunate enough to play with, he'd probably have at least the same number of Championships by now.

NO.... Garnett may or may not be better, but San Antonio would be a classless organization to trade Tim Duncan. Tim can play till he's 60 and I wouldn't mind him being on the spurs

I discovered something very shocking that nobody in these boards seem to know. In 2003, the Spurs actually won a championship with a team that featured only one All-Star in Tim Duncan!
This came as an absolute shock to me, as I have been told over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again on this forum that Duncan won the championships he had was because he had great teammates. Coming from Mars and with Spurstalk as my only news on the Spurs and the NBA, I thought that this Tim Duncan fellow is some 2nd rated bench warmer, unlike fellow superstar Kevin Garnett.
Another earth-shaking (or Mars-shaking) discovery I made was the this NBA superstar Kevin Garnett actually had all-star teammates in Stephon Marbury, Wally Szcerbiak, Latrell Sprewell and Sam Cassell, but has only took his team past the 1st round of the playoffs ONCE, in which they lost in the WCF.

Good points. But I also mentioned coaching as well as role players. Duncan has been pretty lucky in that regard compared to KG. KG hasn't exactly had the best coaches to depend on for help. Flip Sauders, Kevin McHale, and Dwane Somethingorother. Not exactly world-beaters when it comes to good coaching.

So Garnett only plays good in December?
He plays well all the time. I'm just pointing out the fact that I feel this thread was created after a meaningless game in December, simply because KG outplayed him. I'm glad you started the topic with a question though, and didn't just flat out say KG was better based on one game.

12-16-2005, 01:49 AM
No way. Not even close. Timmy is just so much better. KG can fill a stat sheet, but he doesn't have the winning track record of our boy.
Dude, last year TD's regular season stats are the same as now, but notice in the playoffs his averages elevated just like Manu, because that's when it counts, that is where it is crucial or not. TD has already proven himself in the regular season, so there is no reason to make a big fuss if he doesn't get 20/20 everynight.

Hell no. KG is not the PLAYER that Tim is. Maybe statwise they are equal or even a slight edge to KG, but as an all around player Tim has KG beat by miles. KG can't play with anyone, he's had numerous all-stars on his squad but can't do jack with them. Would you want to go play with a guy who spits in your face and punches the mess out of you if you try to score on him in practice? No way. The past few years we've been in the running for really decent free agents and the reason I always remember is "I want to win a ring with Duncan". Maybe it's not said directly but indirectly it's always there.

Thanks guys, I am just sick and tired of people not appreciating the talent the Spurs have right now, and nitpick at every possible thing. I like this team, it's a very dominant team and is one of the team with the best chance of winning a ring in quite a few years. In fact, I can only recall a handful of teams that are as favoured to win it all as the 2006 Spurs in the years I have been watching ball (2002 Lakers, 97 Bulls, 93 Bulls, 85 Celtics, those ancient Celtics, 88 Lakers), it doesn't have a 100% chance at winning a championship, but no team does.
I like Pop (I used to want him fired, I must confess), I like Duncan, I like Parker, I like Ginobili, I like Bowen (actually, he is fast becoming my favourite Spur), I like Mohamed, I like Rasho, I like Finley, I like NVE, I like Udrich, I like PJ Carlesimo, I like Barry, I like Oberto, and I like Marks. I won't cry for days if ANY of them got traded, because I think the Spurs organization has heard a certain level of trust from the fans for what they have accomplish over the last decade. I mean, how many teams can say that they won a championship while they were rebuilding?
Sorry, I am rambling, I just can't understand why there are so many complaints after one game in December where Duncan got outplayed by one of the best players in the NBA, AND the Spurs still won, after what the team and it's fans have went through in the 80s and early 90s heartbreakers.

12-16-2005, 01:01 PM
Even if we concede that Garnett is better than Duncan, that trade still wouldn't make sense. The Spurs win because the coach and players compliment the star's skills. Garnett has a different skill set, and I can't see Pop being as successful with Garnett.
The Spurs contend ever year. They won the title last season and are favored to win it again this season. Making that trade at this point would make no sense.

To qualify as a "true" fan you've also gotta believe that POP is the greatest coach ever, RC is the best GM, the uniforms are the coolest ever, the coyote is the best mascot ever, the Silver Dancers are the finest girls on the planet, the popcorn is the freshest in the SBC, the beer is the coldest in the SBC, blah, blah, blah.

I'm a fan and want them to win a ring every year, but I could not care less what the media says about us (or other fans for that matter). Even swap, right now. Would you do it?
Why?
Why not?
I know most of you will try to play the "look at the rings" card. But keep in mind that if Garnett had the same role players and coaching staff that Duncan has been fortunate enough to play with, he'd probably have at least the same number of Championships by now.
It takes so much to make this thread.

Kevin Garnett is a small forward. You don't trade big for small.
Does it really matter? KG's eight feet tall!
Trading Duncan???? Unbelievable! Unthinkable! Idiotic to suggest such a thought. :hat

Last night was a perfect example why I wouldn't trade Tim for KG, Tim's post up game is just so dominating even when he is off, the defenses have to respect him and collapse on him with 2, 3 ,4 or even 5 guys when he is in the paint. As great a player as KG is his game isn't down low he is more of a face up player and I just have never really seen him dominate a game from the low post spot for an entire game, like our man Timmy.
With Timmy, even without a Tony or manu, the Spurs will have a winning record.
