I'd be happy with a consistent mid-range jumper from Beno for pick-and-rolls and pick-and-pops.

No.

He has an awesome mid-range jumper. He's also not afraid to drive.

Would a PG have a lesser chance of making it to the NBA if they had an excellent Mid Range Jumper but, didn't have a good 3pt shot?

No, not really, E20. Distributing the ball, entering the offense, taking care of the ball are more important requirements of an NBA PG.

Look at the top 10 PGs currently playing in the NBA.
Jason Kidd shoots 32% from downtown (career). Likewise with Tony Parker. Starbury is a career 31% 3-pt shooter and Steve Francis is a little higher at 34% (29% last season, however). Those are 4 of the top 10 PGs. Need more data?

players with excellent midrange jumpers don't grow on trees....

lots more to consider though. can the pg run the team, play D, limit turnovers? if so, he has just as good a shot as anyone....

with TD on the floor though, the long range bombers are obviously an assett...

i agree that if beno has a solid midrange game, that would be spectacular....comparisons to speedy come to mind....

but i think we need another long range bomber, and i'm looking for a ray of sunshine wherever i can find it....

Solid D

I looked at this one time before on PGs who have developed into a good 3-pt shooter over the years and one guy proves that a player CAN develop with effort and the proper environment into a more complete player. Special emphasis on the proper environment/team.

It's odd that Solid D brought up Sam Cassell. That is who Beno reminded me of during summer league. He has that automatic midrange shot and is deadly on the top of the key pick-and-roll.

The thing that worries me about Beno is whether he is tough enough for the NBA. He had a lot of small injuries in summer league and had a rep in Europe that he couldn't play through injuries.

If he can survive training camp and preseason without getting banged up, he'll have a good season.

SequSpur

Midrange jumper?

WTF is that? The NBA is not the Olympics. You either have an inside game or you shoot it from the 3 point line. Point guards don't get points from the midrange.

The Spurs need guards that can shoot the 3 to keep the defense from sagging on Tim. This was the problem in the playoffs and the problem with having Avery Johnson and Anthony Carter as a point guard.

Beno sucks.

Wrong, he is at home early, wishing he was playing on a playoff team, wishing that his azz could shoot the 3 ball.

If midrange is the shot of choice, then why in the **** is Avery not a Spur any longer?

Because David and Tim were tired of his man hanging on their jock straps when they tried to do something.

Beno fills the same Avery role.

The Spurs need shooters.

Yeah, we'll see homers..........

I just ain't inclined to lick Pop's balls on every move he makes like some of youse.

I can name at least 6 mistakes he made with 25 million dollars. That's enough to last a life time.

Look tacos, the Spurs finished 2nd in the Midwest and got sent home packing in the second round... 4 straight.

If you homer asses want to lick the balls of a coach and gm that can't validate a fucking championship and let the Eastern Conference take one, then you can have Beno.

The main problem of the Spurs last year was the BACKUP POINT GUARD and now we got... low and behold..............

BENO!

I can't help it that I have the expectations of a champion... you Popabeyitches are buying into that Body Solution Zit medicine that he is selling.

The Spurs still have......

Rasho and no backup point guard.....

The 2 mistakes of 2003.

Devin Brown?

I like Devin, but damn, I ain't betting my money on him just yet, he is still developing.....

You need to go back and read Sequ takes....

We need NBA players to win without David Robinson.

Rasho is not going to cut it... no way, no how... Yeah, we win the west and go up against Miami in the finals and Shaq goes for 70 percent from the field again and we get swept...

Then, Parker gets toxic shock syndrome again and we go to Devin, Manu and Brent?

I would love to see Pop on the sideline for that one, that will be entertaining in itself.

PS: I am not the one that says Manu can't play more minutes.... Popadummy did. He thinks he plays with to much energy and he gets worn out easy... blah blah blah.....

Insert Hedo... Pops boyfriend... So now we have Brent... now who is going to backup up Tony? Wait, I thought Brent was... oh... now we have Devin who is not a point guard, who is not an excellent 3 point shooter...wait... wasn't that the problem of the nightmare of 2004??? ****... now we are back to square one....

Get a backup POINT GUARD... please.....................

While your at it, please turn Rasho into the local fire station...

Paper lineups don't win shit. Fouls, injuries, off nights, etc. etc.. It's simple. As long as Rasho is the starting center for San Antonio, the Spurs will NEVER win another championship. Rasho has NO game. NO skills. and NO BALLS. This lack of talent puts more pressure on the young ones like Brown and Beno... and heck.. even Parker..... And Tim? Midrange Beno and Devin's defender will be all over him.... When Tim goes out the Spurs are dead in the water.... That's sad... just think of what 25 million could of had.... Rasho?

Sad situation....

Interesting write-up comments regarding the Slovenia v. Turkey game:
-----------------------------------------------------------
At the other hand Slovenia had no problem to defeat an unorganized Turkey.Turkish team was on the court with the same starting line up but Rasim Basak who was not even in the game roster yesterday. This time Cevher Ozer was out and he was on the court.Turkey started the game well and took the lead with Mehmet Okur who scored from inside but Slovenia responded with tough center Rasho Nesterovic to tie the game. Then Slovenia took the lead with lefty Beno Udrih in the fifth minute of the first period and never let Turkey tie the game.Turkish team resisted with Mehmet Okur,Baris Ermis and Kerem Gonlum but Slovenia responded again and again inspite of the turnovers so coach Alec Papin called a time out in the minutes that Turkey started playing tough defence.Turkey wasted a chance just after an offensive rebound and Slovenia led the first quarter 16-20.Turkey scored with Mehmet Okur and Ermal Kurtoglu who had a good off the bench performance but Slovenia forced Turkey to turnovers with full court press and opened the gap up to 7 with Beno Udrih who scored most of his baskets with mid range shots using the screens of Maravic and Nestorovic.Turkey started playing zone defence to reduce the gap so Slovenia coach Papic called another time out. After that Saso Ozbold sinked a triple,Kerem Tunceri wasted a chance and Slovenia led the first half by 8 34-42.Turkey grabbed 11 offensive rebounds in the first half but wasted all of them with a 12/37 FG performance as Slovenia played with 16/25.Turkey was on the court with Ender Arslan,Cenk Akyol,Rasim Basak,Kerem Gonlum and Mehmet Okur as Slovenia started with Beno Udrih,Jaka Lakovic,Marko Maravic,Marko Tusek and Rasho Nesterovic. In the beginning of the second half Turkey could not sink any of the outside shots against tough Slovenia defence and a huge 15-0 serie mostly scored by Beno Udrih who was definitely man of the match. Then Tanjevic called Mehmet Okur and Kerem Gonlum to the bench,Huseyin Demiral and Ermal Kurtoglu who broke Slovenia's serie with a hook shot stepped in.But Turkey struggled on defence and kept playing the zone that was crushed by Beno Udrih and Jaka Lakovic.Serkan Erdogan probably the only sharp shooter to damage Slovenia's zone defence picked an injury and taken to the hospital who will have to be sidelined for a week.Huseyin Demiral's post move added 2 points to the score sheet but Slovenia led the third quarter 45-71.In the last period Turkey started with full court press but nothing worked out especially when Ender Arslan got out of the control and made terrible decisions.Ermal Kurtoglu and Mehmet Okur were fouled out as a three pointer reduced the gap down to 20 points but Ivica Jurkovic added a few more points so Slovenia won the game by 25.
