Have any of you hit the slopes? Recently? This holiday?

Thispego is skiing riiiight about now, up in the exclusive region of Colorado.
I've never been skiing, but have always wanted to go.

So Colorado restricts people coming in to ski now?

Maybe I worded it wrong. It's supposed to read "AN exclusive region of colorado" duh..

My aunt *hit* a tree on the slopes and was in a coma for a month ... does that count? :wow

I think that made me too chicken to even try ... I make awesome homemade cocoa, though. :tu :oops

I definitely have a fear of the kennedy thing too. I'd probably chicken out the first or second time I tried to hit the slopes.

An old roommate of mine wound up living out a soap opera story line thanks to a skiing accident. It was his senior year in high school, and he had finally gotten the courage up to ask out this girl that he had known and pined over for a good long while. He asked her out, she said yes, and things were going great, to the point where he felt like he was falling for her. They had been together for about 2 months when she and her family went on a ski trip for the holidays. She ran head long into a tree and suffered a concussion and forgot about three and a half months of her life, including the fact that she was dating my friend. My friend said that they were never really able to capture any of their old chemistry after that.

But it turned out for the best. The same guy got engaged about six months ago and is happier than ever. Any time anyone mentions skiing this is the first thing that jumps to mind. The second is the image of that German skier wiping out during the "agony of defeat" part of the ABC's Wide World of Sports promos.

I've only been once since I sold my condo in Crested Butte about 5 years ago...I used to ski two or three weeks a year...I loved skiing the double diamond stuff up on the headwall...Unfortunately my knees can't take the pounding like they used to...I still have the ability to do it but my knees blow up by the second day...and I don't really like "slowing down" and cruising blues and trying to avoid the dentists...:lol

I will never ski because I hate cold weather, snow, and any kind of physical activity, besides sex.

Skiing is a blast. I would go all of the time if it was convenient. It's really not a very frightening thing at all, particularly if you stay in the middle of the runs, on the packed snow, and away from the trees. In the beginning, you fall a lot, but it's a very easy process to learn. And once you learn the basics, you don't fall down as much and know how to control your speed, so things are all good.

I'm trying to go in February, either to Utah or Colorado. I can't say that either place will be exclusive skiing like thispego is apparently getting, but even if I have to share it with the whole world, I still can't wait!!

ThisPego goes skiing once a year at ultra exclusive locales.

He never invites me, or mookie, ever.
I bet it's so fun. Plus you get drunk so easily at high altitudes. Best of both worlds.

Ruidoso, NM is close enough to drive to and if it's your first time, it's not a bad place to start. Grab three friends, split the cost of a room/cabin and gas and you're there. Ski rentals (skis, boots and poles) can be as low as $10-12 per day. Lift tickets are the ones that will kill you at $51 a day but it's not a bad deal if you get a full day of skiing in. And if you haven't skiied before, you can pay for a group lesson (about $50) and they'll provide your first lift ticket free (basically a free lesson).

Here is the website - http://www.skiapache.com/

Ski during the day, jump in a hot tub to loosen the muscles (hopefully with company of the opposite sex) and hit the casinos at night. And there are some decent places to grab a few evening brews including a brewpub.

They opened their skiing season late (just last weekend) so some of their "first snow" specials are coming in later in the year than normal. $34 lift tickets until further notice and Inn of the Mountain Gods (biggest casino there) may be extending their own first snow special (http://www.skiapache.com/firstsnowskispecial.html) since the season started late.

You'll get a little spoiled once you ski someplace like Colorado but for your first times or if you just want to keep the cost down, Ski Apache fits the bill.

This is the best place in Oregon. Mt Hood Meadows is pretty good too.

SW, you won't run into trees on blue and green runs...unless you are a total doofus.:)

Besides, you can rent a helmet.

Definitely! I went to the University of Snowbird. err- Utah! :) Skiiing is great, but it sure made it difficult to make it to class back when I was an undergread. Fresh powder always won over class time. :lol

I like Alta in Utah as well as Deer Valley.

Sun Valley Idaho is where we went last Spring Break and I loved that place.

I knew I would get a rise out of Jim with that one...

Unfortunately it's true...I hate dodging rookies...they are so erratic...you never know if they are going left or right because they don't know either...:lol...It sucks to be smoking down the hill at Mach 2 and have some idiot staring between his feet at his "teepee" turn right in front of you...

My buddy and I were scouting 3 day trips to Utah in Feb. for less than $500/person that included lodging at The Canyons, with rentals and lift tickets useable at Deer Valley and Park City as well, I think. It sounds like a winner to me.

Headed for Lake Tahoe the 22nd of this month. Some of the best skiing is found there. This will be my 5th trip. Love to snowmobile too!

I used to be great at skiing when I was *much* younger. Or well, as good as one could be at that age. Then I had a bit of an accident, non-ski related, and I have been terrified ever since.

Or maybe it's just that, as I grew up and became smarter, I realized that going at high speeds over ice is without reliable breaks is the exact definition for "out of control." Yeah, if you understand how to ski it's not too dangerous, but you still cannot protect yourself from the thousand other idiots who have no concept of safety and control whatsoever.

Utah tends to have really good deals going. Overall, it's still among the best lift ticket prices. You can check it all out here. :)

Yeah...shit can happen...I was skiing at Keystone once...I was on my third or fourth day and had my routine down...I had figured out several linking black runs and would blow down throught them without stopping...the last part before the lift at the bottom was a blue...coming off the black run there was a wide bunny trail crossing it and then the blue run started up again below the trail...you couldn't actually see the blue run but I knew it was there...I normally scoped out the cross traffic and would pick an open slot and blow across without slowing down and would then get 20-30 feet of air off the lip of the cross trail and then tuck to the bottom...

It was early and the first run of the day and not crowded...Had a great run and hit the cross trail at Mach 2 with my hair on fire...came screaming off the lip with great air and then was like ohhhhhhhh shiiiiiiiiiiit! They had broken a snow making hose the night before and hadn't roped off the trail yet...there was nothing below me but black ice with football sized yellow rocks sticking up through it...when I finally touched down I immediately dumped it down on my left hip with my ski's cross slope on edge out in front of me to try to slow down...hammering through the ice and rocks...completely destroyed a new pair of GS racing skis and was almost totally black on my left side the next day from bouncing through the rocks but managed to finally get it stopped without killing myself...

I grew up skiing, and actually almost broke my leg on a tree a few years ago. (But, that was my fault, I did something really stupid.) Also, I had a good friend from high school killed when her skis caught that orange caution fence and flung her head first into a tree.

I still ski, though. I'm just not stupid about it anymore. Haven't been in a few years, but I'm going soon. I agree that Ruidoso is a great place for a beginner - or also for someone looking to do it cheap.
