Oh, brother! Buckeyes' Hawk dates sister of Irish's Quinn

Ohio State linebacker says heart will be in right place for Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame

COLUMBUS, Ohio-- Christmas at the Quinns could be pretty awkward this year now that football has essentially split the family. It is an amicable division, but one that complicates matters in the days before Ohio State meets Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.

Ohio State's best player is linebacker A.J. Hawk, who has made his reputation by putting wicked hits on opposing quarterbacks. Notre Dame's star is quarterback Brady Quinn, who looks the best when he is making linebackers look bad.

This all gets dicey when Laura Quinn enters the room because she is Brady's sister and Hawk's girl-friend. It might take Dr. Phil to sort this out.

"We wanted to try and keep it quiet," Hawk said of his four-month relationship with Quinn's older sister, "but we realized that would be impossible. It's not a big deal, but everybody has been making it a big deal."

Hawk, a two-time All-American and the Big Ten's defensive player of the year, met Laura Quinn through mutual friends. She is a broadcast journalism major attending college in California, but the family home is in Dublin, Ohio, not far from the Ohio State campus.

Ohio State center Nick Mangold, Hawk's roommate, said there was nothing unusual about the relationship -- until the bowl matchups came out and the Buckeyes were hooked up with the Irish.

"She's a great girl, and they seem really happy," Mangold said. "It just gets a little bit funny when you throw in the fact we're playing Notre Dame. But I'm sure it won't affect the way either of them approach the game. They'll still be trying as hard as they can to beat the other guy -- and that's the way it should be."

Hawk was able to laugh and joke about the situation when asked about it at a recent awards show, saying neither he nor the Notre Dame quarterback would be comfortable putting Laura in the middle of all this.

"We don't talk football with her," Hawk said, adding it was his hope all along the Buckeyes would get a chance to face Notre Dame, a team Ohio State has played only four times in its history.

Hawk left no question for whom Laura Quinn should be cheering when his Buckeyes square off with the Irish on Jan. 2.

"She'll be rooting for her brother -- and she'd better be," Hawk said. "She's known him a lot longer than she's known me."
