California Jury Awards $207 Million to Wal-Mart Workers Who Claim They Were Denied Lunch Breaks

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- A California jury on Thursday awarded $207 million to thousands of employees at Wal-Mart Stores Inc. who claimed they were illegally denied lunch breaks.

The world's largest retailer was ordered to pay $57 million in general damages and $150 million in punitive damages to about 116,000 current and former California employees for violating a 2001 state law that requires employers to give 30-minute, unpaid lunch breaks to employees who work at least six hours.

Their revenue (sales) from the last 12 months was actually $305b.

I'm guessing the award was fairly close to Walmart's profits in California that year - not sure why you consider that "peanuts".

violating a 2001 state law that requires employers to give 30-minute, unpaid lunch breaks to employees who work at least six hours.

That must be a state law - because I work part-time for HEB and we only get a 15-minute break when we work 6 hours. And sometimes our breaks are an hour late if it gets real busy.

I used to work for Chachos when I was a teen and they only had 12 hour shifts with NO break at all, and u know how bussy Chachos is. I don't know if they still do that, but it wasn't against the law here though.

It should be a law, even though I personally didn't need a break once I got into management. But some ppl do.
