There's no need for that. They didn't have Manu. It's just a win. It helps for HCA, but it means very little (if anything) aside from that. I am encouraged that we really pounded them on the glass. Shows that when we really want it we can dominate the boards against the best of em.

You don't need a link. You just need common sense. Unless the Spurs have no pride. It doesn't take a genius to realize that this was their biggest game of the season (maybe 2nd to the game in San An). Just as it was the Pistons.

It doesn't mean the win means anything. But don't blame every loss on the team mailing it in. You can do that against bottom dwellers, but I'm not buying it against the team with the best record in the league on national TV.

I realize the Spurs have 4 more losses than the Pistons. But this "home court advantage" talk is very premature from both Spurs and Pistons fans. Everyone is acting like the Pistons can't possibly have a losing streak and the Spurs won't have a winning streak. There's a lot of basketball to be played. Injuries and other turn of events change a season. A four loss difference this early in the season isn't insurmountable. Slow your roll.

No, the Finals HCA talks is NOT premature.
The only thing that's going to slow the Pistons is injuries.
They've shown the discpline and focus in Nov/Dec to get to 22-3.

For these Spurs vs these Pistons, HCA is critical, as the Pisotns fully realize.
And the Spurs, sitting on their laurels, have sleep-walked themselves into a deep hole.

Giving away Ws to lottery Hornets and Hawks, and giving a W to Bulls @SBC (Bulls haven't done shit since) will cost the Spurs dearly.

The game means nothing in the bigger picture aside from another "W" or "L" for either team. But, of course, it's nice to win. The good, non-trolling Pistons fans should not be gloating about the win. Neither team looked very sharp today. Spurs definitely could use Manu's energy and talents.

I just hope everything else stays the course, and these two teams end up meeting each other in the Finals. Nothing is guaranteed, and this particular game was not very pleasant to watch from an offensive standpoint, but I still feel these are the two best teams in the league.

Good win for the Pistons. They picked up their level of play in the fourth quarter. I'm sure Spurs will get it going when they have Manu back and TD gets a little healtier.

We'll see you guys in San Antonio for the next regular season match-up, and hopefully again in the post season.

Pistons 85, Spurs 70

Pistons Bring Back Defense Against Spurs
By JOHN ELIGON

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Dec. 25 - The Detroit Pistons have put points on the board this season about as fast as they have put up victories. It is the most visible sign of the revamped offense that their new coach, Flip Saunders, has brought with him.

But against the Spurs on Sunday - when the teams met for the first time since Game 7 of last season's N.B.A. finals - the Pistons seemed to remember that it was defense that powered them to an N.B.A. title two seasons ago and had them one victory away from a second championship last season.

The Pistons held the Spurs to a season low in scoring in an 85-70 victory to improve their league-best record to 22-3. Detroit has won seven games in a row.

The Pistons entered the game scoring 6.5 more points a game than they did last season, when they averaged 93.3 points and ranked 24th in the league.

Although they are sixth in the league this season in points allowed (91.3), the Pistons on Sunday looked more like last season's team, which was second in the league, giving up 89.5 points.

"We're still a defensive basketball team," said guard Chauncey Billups, who led five Pistons in double figures with 20 points. "So many people are talking about our offense just because it's the only thing new.

"When you play another great team like that, defense pretty much wins. It was an ugly game, but it was a good game though."

The Pistons outrebounded the Spurs, 57-30; they had 18 offensive rebounds to San Antonio's 6.

It seemed only fitting that Pistons forward Ben Wallace, a three-time defensive player of the year, was the catalyst to Detroit's stalwart defense. He grabbed a season-high 21 rebounds to go with 10 points.

Less than two weeks ago, after Wallace had only six rebounds in a loss Dec. 12 to the Utah Jazz, he expressed frustration.

"I am just not happy with my game," he told The Detroit News. "I've got to be better. I've got to play better. I have to play harder. I have to bring something more than what I've been doing."

With those words, Wallace appeared to wake himself from an early-season slumber.

In the Pistons' seven games since then, he has averaged 15.1 rebounds and 2.9 blocked shots.

"The only pressure I put up on myself is to go out there and rebound the basketball, make my presence felt on the defensive end, make plays," Wallace said.

On Sunday, Wallace had the added motivation of facing Tim Duncan, a two-time most valuable player in the league.

"You know you got to be on top of your game or you're going to get embarrassed," Wallace said.

Wallace and his fellow big men held Duncan to 18 points and 9-of-20 shooting.

The Pistons appeared to be playing with something extra against the team that squashed their hopes of a second consecutive N.B.A. title, but their prevailing attitude was that this game meant little in the grand scheme of the season.

This was especially true because the Spurs (21-7) were without guard Manu Ginóbili, who missed his eighth consecutive game with a sprained right foot. Ginóbili averaged 18.7 points in the finals last season and solidified himself as the Spurs' No. 2 man behind Duncan.

This game may not mean much come June, but for now, the Pistons can relish the fact that they may have planted a seed as the team to beat in the N.B.A.

"I think they are playing a lot better at this point than we were playing," Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich said. "Flip has upped their offense, he has them really confident in what they're running offensively, but they're also one of the best defensive teams in the game."

The Spurs also have a formidable defense. They allowed the fewest points per game last season and are fifth in the league this season, so it should come as no surprise that Sunday's game did not feature an aesthetically pleasing offensive performance.

The Pistons shot 41.5 percent from the field and the Spurs shot 40 percent.

It was reminiscent of last season's N.B.A. finals, in which the Pistons averaged 86.7 points and shot 43.4 percent from the field, while the Spurs averaged 84.9 points and shot 42.9 percent.

The Spurs tied a franchise low with 8 points in the first quarter, all from point guard Tony Parker. He finished with a team-high 19 points and 4 assists.

After Parker hit a jumper to give the Spurs a 6-2 lead with 8 minutes 47 seconds to play in the first, the Pistons outscored the Spurs by 16-2 the rest of the quarter.

"You saw both teams as basically who they are - both meat-and-potato teams," Saunders said.

He added, "This is what basketball was meant to be like - play defense, play team basketball, not turn the ball over and make plays for each other."

Rip sucks, or is it good defense???

Id say the Spurs look pretty good for a team missing their key SG.

Take Rip Hamilton off the Pistons and this lead isnt there either.
rick hamilton was a game time decission he is hurt.
