will the SBC Center be renamed AT&T Center anytime soon? I noticed the Cotton Bowl was sponsored by AT&T now, and when Chase and Bank One merged, they renamed Bank One Ballpark to Chase Park in Phoenix (home of the D-Backs). So i was just wondering if the Spurs will be playing at the AT&T Center soon.

yes. it takes time. they need to re-brand everything from the street signs for SBC Center parkway to the dinnerware in the arena restaurant. if you do a search on like topics, one of the many threads has a list of everything they have to change.

True, including the top of the arena (outdoors).

SBC bought AT&T...then decided to maintain the AT&T name rather than SBC.

Purely business, polandprzem. AT&T has name recognition worldwide...SBC is a (large) regional company.

i think at&t wireless was separate in everything but name before cingular bought them out. but anyway hopefully cingular will start using at&t's satellites for cell phones too, b/c cingular's coverage is very spotty at best in austin... had way better reception with at&t, esp inside buildings

yup I know it.

First time I met with the SBC was when the Spurs left Alamodome.

I wonder what kind of profits can the Spurs espect (?)

SBC owns half of Cingular, the other half is owned by BellSouth.

There's been talk that AT&T (SBC) will buy BellSouth.

i tend to think that the AT&T Center has a better ring to SBC Center (haha get it...) but no seriously.

My off-the-top recollection (probably some mistakes):

The system back in the 70s was designed to keep local companies (the Bells) separate from the long distance company (AT&T) for anti-trust purposes.

Then they decided to de-monopolize long distance, which led to the mutiple long-distance providers (MCI, Sprint, etc.).

Then they decided to allow some of the locals to also provide long-distance services. Various mergers began to occur between the locals to form bigger regional companies (NYNET, Bell Atlantic, Southwestern Bell, etc.)

Cell phones services made the distinction between local and long-distance providers hazy, and internet services essentially obliterated it.

Now were at the point where you have competition between different multipurpose "communications companies". It was somewhat convoluted, but I think it worked out okay.

You may be right. I talked to Andrew Monaco, who calls the Rampage/Silver Stars - and I think he's doing the Spurs on TV on Friday. He was worried about slipping up and calling it SBC.
