DETROIT (CNNMoney.com) - People thought American two-door performance cars were dead. The Chevrolet Camaro and the Pontiac Firebird went out of production in 2003. That left just the Mustang hanging on.

Muscular-looking car modeled after 1969 classic.

It's not hanging on anymore. With its 2005 redesign, the Mustang has taken off, selling like it did in 1964 when it was first introduced.

Now the ghosts are revving their engines. Yesterday, the Dodge Challenger, in modern concept-car form, was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show. Today, it was the Camaro.

Ever since the new Mustang was released, General Motors executives have been saying they wanted to compete. So far, these are only concepts but each could be produced with a few changes.

The Camaro concept rolled out onto the show floor at the North American International Auto Show, better known as the Detroit Auto Show, this morning.

Like the Dodge Challenger concept, which was revealed on Sunday, the Camaro follows the Mustang's lead in taking its design cues straight from the classics of the late 1960s and early '70s.

"The fact that the Camaro has been out of production for a number of years made it particularly important that the Camaro Concept honors the Camaro heritage in the right way," said Bob Boniface, director of GM's Warren Advanced Design Studio,

The 2006 concept was particularly inspired by the 1969 version of the Camaro.

"The overall proportions, long hood and powerful fender forms say, 'This is a front-engine, rear-wheel drive performance vehicle,' " said Tom Peters, GM's design director for rear-wheel drive performance cars.

The concept car has a prominent front grille and hood bulge. Large wheels (the front wheels are 21 inches in diameter and the back wheels are 22 inches), exposed high-performance brakes, and prominent fender shapes add to the "muscle car" theme.

Under the hood, the concept Camaro shares an aluminum 6.0-liter engine with the Chevrolet Corvette C6 race car.

Will Southsiders be able to get one with a front fender painted in primer and the tailpipe dragging?

Damn...that's a hot car but if I could choose between ^ and a restored '69 Camaro...I'd pick the restored '69.

exactly. I've got a '69 Bird and hope they give pontiac a go at better designing for the Bird.

As for the camaro... There are better attempt at going retro, but it's not sexy enough. The lines are too straight on it. They need to be a little more curvy on the sides and raise the roof a few inches. And the front grill... Looks like it's curved upwards - almost smiling. That reminds me of the neew Cadies. There were a few other retro concept Camaro's in recent year that looked a bit better.
Here is a video of it http://www.roadandtrack.com/article.asp?section_id=15&article_id=3124

Anyone see the new Challenger.. Dodge hit the nail on the head with that.

Just as long as the White Trash in this town can get one to sit in their front yard sitting on center blocks right in front of their trailer.

One thing about those old Camaro's..

Pre 71... Where uncomfortable... and shifting.. that really sucked.

The 70's models ruled.. low rider buckets.. you could move real far back and much better shifting...

The white trash don't drive Camaros, they drive Firebirds. Get it straight.

A lot of those 67-69 Camaro's died a horrible death on the San Antonio cinder blocks.....

I would never let the Overhaulin people touch my car

I have been up close to the GTO they did for Lance Armstrong, and it is far away from perfect. the interior was not done very well, and the paint had a cheap clear on it. Also none of the lines (door, fender, trunk) were matched up.

It honestly looked like a hackjob, I was not impressed.

Chip Foose is probably one of the top 5 customizers (Rad Rides by Troy being the best EVER) but all of Chips award winners (3 Riddler awards) have been projects that have lasted for months on end. A week, even in full 24hr shifts, is no way to restore a car from the ground up.

if you want to see some works of rolling art, go check out www.radrides.com

BTW that 72 Chevy pickup they have on the radrides site is absolutley FLAWLESS!!

hopefully they get rid of the huge ass wheels.a sports car isnt supposed to have such big wheels and would make the handling/ride go to shit.

and i agree with silver 21 black 20. its a sports car, the interior most of the time sint the most comfortable. shifting would be a problem though that i wouldnt want. if a car doesnt shift smoothly/easily then all the pwer in the world wont help and will just be a waste.

I agree, that car would look a lot better with smaller wheels....
