Texas' Starting Players for 2006

I was trying to figure out who will be starting for Texas next year...this is what I have. Make changes to it if you think I am wrong at some spots because I might be.

Well, there are definitely some possibilities at different positions for UT, a few to consider:

TE- J. Finley has some big time skills, could end up being a great TE in terms of catching the ball, not sure how good a run blocker he is. For that reason expect to see some of N. Tweedie and P. Ulman at TE, both are very good run blockers and without VY behind center, I could see us using some two TE formations for J. Charles, R. Taylor, H. Melton and S. Young to run behind.

QB- VY had some good things to say about Colt McCoy, but I think it will be a battle for that starting QB position. J. Snead looked pretty damn good in that Army all-star game, and we've also got S. Harris out of Dallas coming in, although he looks to be more of a project at QB.

WR- I'll go with Q. Cosby and L. Sweed as well, but I also think WR will be one of our strongest positions on the team next season. We've also got B. Pitman back, J. Shipley will hopefully be healthy, and then T. Gatewood and another big time WR recruit who will come in as a freshman, he's like 6'4-6'5 with good hands, we'll see about him.

DT- Okam is a lock to start, but don't be surprised if Roy Miller is starting beside him with Lokey and freshman recruit BJ Alexander out of South Carolina backing up. From two-a-day reports before this season, the coaches really like Roy's potential at DT.

LB- This is where things get interesting. I really don't like Babino at WLB, he's a little slow covering guys in the open field, and he got his ass kicked by the USC OL most of the night in the Rose Bowl. I like Killebrew at MLB, but I could easily see Sergio Kindle coming in and playing that WLB position. He's got the speed and the hitting ability to play there, kind of in the DJ mold, know what I mean? At SLB, I thought Foreman was out of eligibility, meaning a freshman like Justin Earnest could come in or maybe Muckleroy? Not sure there yet.

SS- This is a move I would love to see the coaches make. Move D. Kelson back to this position. Did you see him in the Rose Bowl covering Reggie Bush, also making an interception that didn't get called correctly? If he can cover Bush, he sure as hell can play SS alongside M. Griffin. I would love to see a big, physical guy like Kelson back there, also still able to come up in run support.

I was thinking about Kelson that he should be able to play somewhere. He is pretty damn fast for being a LB type. That would be pretty interesting move to make him SS, he could be a hard hitter such as the Roy Williams type.

Lately our secondary has consisted mostly of guys that are around 6 foot tall and between 195-205lbs. It helps that they are FAST as hell, but I would love to see a big fucker like Kelson back there at SS laying the wood on WR's running those crossing routes and then coming up to put a hurtin' on opposing RB's. I think it would be a good fit for him.

if it took 3 entire games to recover from the loss of our Geiger, it will take double that to recover from the loss of dibbles....he played a crucial role in the chode decapitation of Lendale White and his offensive line during 4th and 2.

^ I'm tellin' ya, move Kelson back to SS and have him playing with Griffin at FS, you've got two mean hitting SOB's back there, those two will take heads off in the secondary. I thin it would be a great combination. I also think we'll be even better on the DL and at LB. Sergio Kindle is going to come in a create some chaos at the WLB spot, Killebrew is a monster and will slide right into the MLB position. On the D line, I think Okam and Miller will be a great starting tandem at DT, with Lokey and freshman Alexander backing up. At DE we look damn good, Robison and Crowder will return as starters, but like above poster mentioned, I expect solid contributions from Orakpo and the big time DE recruit we have coming in, Lewis. I actually think our defense will be better than this year's defense, they'll keep the opposing team from scoring too much since we won't be putting up the same offensive numbers.

I think a good question is if Matt McCoy makes the team next year
who do you redshirt? Snead or Harris
or can you get through the season with only 2 qbs?
Snead seems to be ready to play soon, but do you redshirt him, let him learn the playbook and hopefully save him for the future? or get him some experience behind Colt since Matt Mccoys progress really doesnt mean shit and let Harris be the emergency 3rd stringer
or the other way around?

either way we really don't need any QB injuries in 06

Harris has the speed of Vince but he isn't as big. He is only 6'2" 206 lbs but maybe he will grow some and be around 6'4".

How does one go from Strong Safety to Linebacker? Did he fucking add 60 pounds of pure speed and muscle in one offseason or what?

A lot of times it isn't that much of a stretch. Thomas Davis from UGA probably should have played LB in college. Earnest Shazor from Michigan was another guy who probably was closer to an LB than a real SS.

S. Harris is definitely a project, everything I've read from the coaches indicates he'll be a redshirt next year, the battle will be between McCoy and Snead for starting QB. Remember that Snead is enrolling at UT THIS SPRING, and will get the benefit of playing all through Spring ball. I'm looking forward to attending some of the open practices and then the Orange/White scrimmage later in the Spring to get a look at both of these guys. VY is also on record as saying that McCoy is further along in his development than he was at the same point, and McCoy put up some nasty numbers at Jim Ned HS, although it was only at the 2A level.

As for Kelson, he played mostly safety in high school, so he shouldn't have much problem transitioning back to that spot for UT. Chizik is a D coordinator who likes to play smaller LB's that can fly to the ball, but for the sake of our secondary the coaches might have to move Kelson back there. What are our other optioins? Foster, Marcus Griffin? We've also got a freshman recruit that plays safety, I'll see if I can find some info on him.
