View Full Version : Spurs' Youth Movement

The Spurs seem to be in pretty good shape with regards to the international talent they have drafted and let play in other leagues. They have four guys who (as of now) will be staying overseas for at least one more season:

Robertas Javtokas
Luis Scola
Viktor Sanikidze
Sergei Karaulov

Two youngsters will be joining the team this season.

Beno Udrih
Romain Sato

Then there are the young role players who have some NBA experience under their belt:

Devin Brown
Linton Johnson III

The Spurs have proven to be rather adept at using the draft and the emerging depth of international talent to their advantage. Their second and third best players are Spurs due to the investment the team has made in international scouting over the last 5+ years. In addition they have also done well at picking up young free agents such as Stephen Jackson, Charles Smith, and Devin Brown.

I don't expect all of the prospects the Spurs have signed or drafted to turn out to be NBA players. But they are in much better shape than the teams who use the draft to take an immediate shot on players and dispose of them if they don't immediately pan out.

This, along with the fact that the ages of the top three Spurs are 28, 22, and 27 should be enough to make even a Spurs fan smile.

yes it is nice to have younger bigs ready to take the place of the older bigs (horry) that the spurs do not have to worry about other teams getting or havign to outbid them.

Another nice thought is that as young as this team is, it still has a core of veteran leadership. I think Malik's role is really going to evolve in the final years of his contract. He's the greybeard of the group now, and has a chance to prove himself as a leader if he can keep his ego in check. Tony's already developing veteran leadership character at such a young age, and seems to be our on-court leader of the future. Manu's got a few years under his belt and is due for a real breakout, allstar calibur season (it'll be tough to actually make the AS team with the depth in the West, but that doesn't mean he won't be deserving). Bruce Bowen continues to lead by example, and should be a real asset to our young players when it comes to work ethic and dedication.

Things are looking good for the Silver and Black, no question!

I'd say the Spurs are in damn good shape.

Better than 90% of the teams in the league.

For as much as people harp on the Spurs getting lucky with Duncan, they have been just as skilled in getting the players to surrond Duncan.

The Spurs scouting department is second to none in this league.

If from that list two emerge as real NBA players....the Spurs strike more than gold.

As long as Malik and Rasho are on this team, there is a void in the middle and two wasted paychecks.

The Spurs scouting department is second to none in this league.

Even my friends at LG.net had a thread on Scola were they were ranting against their front office questioning why the Spurs were the one team picking up all the "bargains" overseas. :spin
