I'm currently on a Lufthansa plane flying to Houston. They are offering broadband wireless internet through the boeing satelites. So my friend and I decided to try who good it is.

Well it's pretty good.

We used Skype with webcams and had a nice conversation. The sound was flawless while the video was roughly 1 frame per second - pretty neat for a mobile application.

The pictures below are screen captures of my friends computer in Izola, Slovenia.

As far as I know Lufthansa was the first to offer this service, and still the only one.

It's $30 for the whole flight. But the prices are coming down real soon.

It's very cool. I'm 8 hours into the flihgt, still didn't find time to get bored :lol

The weather has been incredible the whole way (except Frankfurt where we were delayed for an hour because of heavy snowfall).

Here's a picture of Greenland I took from my window.

VERY COOL!

Wish I had that on my flight to Japan. I was right in front of a screen with a map marking where we left (Portland) to where we went (Fukuoka), and everytime I looked up, I swear it had been hours but the little airplane moved a centimeter on the screen. Made the time go reaaaally slow...

I'm so going to play on pokerstars right now. Thanks for the idea :tu

P.S. Melmart I know the feeling! btw I've checked Lufthansa is the only one of the EU / US companies to offer it. In Asia quite a few carriers are offering it on their flights.

I used to HATE that during my 30+ RT flights between SEA and OKINAWA/SEOUL! The whole Outside Temp in F and C, the Time at departure site, the time at arrival site...UGH...I suppose if I was OCD, it might be nice!

$30 per hour or per flight? It's per flight. but they announced a 27$ per 24 hrs package that would work on any airplane during a 24 hours period. So theoretically you could have internet access on all your connecting flights regardless of the carrier. The problem right now is that not enough airlines are offering this service.

It was an Airbus 340-300. The service was first introduced on their new Airbus 320s 2 years ago, but they have retrofitted the whole long haul fleet.

There's no DL limit. It's just a flat fee for the whole flight and the speed while not equal to a DSL/Cable hookup is more than adequate.

P.S. it's Wireless LAN, so you do need a WLAN card in your computer.

Way cool. It's enough for me to try to make up an excuse to fly Lufthansa.

just a spur, maybe a little airplane or lightning bolt.
