View Full Version : Shower Faucet Repair Help - Anyone know a good plumber?

Kori Ellis

The shower faucet handle (not the spigot) has been leaking. It's a single (not separate ones for hot and cold). We went to Lowe's and bought the replacement parts -- the whole cartridge and the handle as well. We replaced the whole thing, but it's still leaking -- a lot.

What's wrong?

(I really don't want to call a plumber today, so someone please help.)

Thanks.

Okay now it's leaking through the ceiling of the laundry room (the bathroom in question is upstairs above the laundry room).

So I guess I need a plumber. This frickin' sucks.

Anyone know anyone reputable and fair priced?

All plumbers are thieves. You are screwed.

Turn off your main line out on your meter so it will quit leakin.

Kori Ellis

I did that.

Where is it leaking?

The shower has one piece that controls the output of the water... Did you replace that?

Also, is the mainline in the shower intact... no cracks leaks, etc..

Kori Ellis

It leaks from around the handle that controls on/off, hot/cold.

I replaced that handle and that cartridge behind it that controls the output of the water.

Yes, that's what we replaced.

OK... you might not have it seated all the way in there... try removing it and putting it back in...

you don't have to put the fixtures back on.. you can turn it on with the pliers...

make sure that the pipe is free of any debris, you can spray some lime away on it and clean it...

Also, make sure that you got the right part, because they can be different..

Kori Ellis

It's the right one. LJ has tried removing it and putting it back like five times already, but I guess we'll try again.

This SUCKS because I'm trying to clean up my house/do laundry and I can't have the water on.

Slomo gets here tonight and is staying here for one week, so I need to get this fixed ASAP.

SequSpur

There is a clip that holds it in are you putting that in there?

Go back and exchange it for another one...

Also turn it clock wise all the way....

I just fixed my buddies shower last week, same thing happened...

Kori Ellis
01-17-2006, 03:34 PM
What do you mean a clip?

SequSpur
01-17-2006, 03:35 PM
When you put the hudus in there, there is a clip, kind've horseshoe looking that slides over it to keep it in there...

Because the water pressure will force it out a little and it will leak.

Shelly

Dang, Sequ...get off the computer and go over to her house and fix it!

Sorry you're having trouble, Kori.

hmm.. I think the clip might be the problem. I'll have LJ try again in a few minutes when he gets home.

Thanks.

1. Pull off the U-shaped retainer clip (see illustration). Or use an adjustable or channel-type wrench to remove the nut that locks the cartridge into the valve body.

2. Grasp the cartridge with locking pliers or a similar tool and pull it straight out (see illustration). (Image 1)

3. Open a water line momentarily to flush out any dirt in the valve body that might cause a leak. Stuff a dry rag under and around the valve to keep water out of the wall opening.

4. Clean the cartridge with an old, soft toothbrush and replace the O-ring at the base of the stem. Reinstall to test.

5. If the problem persists, purchase a cartridge repair kit, which will include the cartridge, a full set of O-rings and grease. Install it according to the manufacturer's instructions.

It might not, but the new one comes with a new clip...

Kori Ellis

I don't think ours has a clip -- it has a screw in the top. (the old one did and the new one does)

It sounds like it's leaking in the wall, I assume it was not doing that before the repair just leaking into the tub.

the cartridge is not seated right or the wrong cartridge was purchased. did you compare the old and new cartridges?

Correct

The cartridges are the same. I'm guessing it's not seated right.

Sequ is here now, trying to fix it.

Good luck with the fix. If you need some help I can come by and take a look at it too. Remeber to wrap any threaded connections with teflon tape before connecting them. It will make the connection water tight. Wrap the tape with the threads so when tightening, the tape is not scraped off.

No tape needed for the shower faucet. I accidentally lifted your pliers Kori, so I'll bring them by tomorrow or Thursday.

Shoulda guessed who would beat me to it.

Hey I took apart the washing machine to fix it the other day ... I must have used up my home maintenance mojo weekly allowance doing that. Luckily sequ is the master of fixing door knobs, shower faucets, drawer handles and anything else that is about four feet off the ground. :)

I would like to use this thread for officially thanking Sequ for repairing the shower in Kori's guest bathroom and thus helping dissipate the myth of the stinky-use-the-shower-once-a-month Europeans.

Mr. SequSpur a whole continent thanks you!
