Bowden dismisses blue-chip wideout from FSU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida State wide receiver Fred Rouse, one of the nation's most highly sought recruits last year, and offensive lineman Cornelius Lewis were kicked off the team Friday by coach Bobby Bowden.

"Both players are dismissed for conduct detrimental to the welfare of the football team," Bowden said in a brief statement that offered no additional explanation. Florida State officials declined further comment.

Both players spent time in Bowden's doghouse last season. He suspended Rouse for one game after the true freshman argued with coaches during the Seminoles' 26-21 loss to Virginia.

"I didn't like it a bit," Bowden said then. "It's one of those things that better not happen again."

Bowden also suspended Lewis, a redshirt freshman, for a game for an unnamed violation of team rules. Lewis then was ejected from the Florida game for fighting and, as a result, had to sit out the first half of Florida State's 27-22 victory in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game.

Rouse, who started the Orange Bowl game against Penn State, had six catches for 114 yards and one touchdown last season. He also returned 11 punts for 97 yards and six kickoffs for 107 yards.

"He was electrifying to me," Bowden had said after Rouse had returned four punts and caught a 54-yard pass in Florida State's first two games. "He's exciting. He excites people around him, and he tried to get people excited around him. That's what you try to get your seniors to do. Some of them do it, but they do it in a quieter way. But this guy, he can't hold back."

Lewis, a redshirt freshman, spent most of last season as a third-teamer but wound up starting three games after injuries depleted Florida State's offensive line.

Neither player has a Tallahassee telephone listing.

rouse was the best WR in the class of 05, and to me, sounded like the most highly touted WR recruit, well ever, he made a few trips to austin and got a nice reception at a UT basketball game
I think he should...go to Texas
meh...seems like a nice guy

Last year in the All-american game he did the "hook em" sign after making a catch. He was interested in Texas and then said that he wanted to wait until the spring signing period to make his decision. Less than a week later he signed with Florida State. Maybe he's still interested in Texas.
