Hey, I'm not knocking a great performance. But the fact remains that this has been an ongoing trend for the past several weeks, where the rest of the team basically stands around, while Kobe jacks up shot after shot.

That is not going to help the team in the long run, and they're not going to win a championship any time in the near future with this bullshit. I don't mind a out of mind performance once in a while, but going with this style every game???

And how in the heck do we find out how good Odom can be for us getting 8 points in one game? I just don't like where the Laker franchise is heading with this.

Trust me, Phil is NOT happy with this, although getting a win is nice.

The difference here is that Magic would have gotten every starting player on the court 20+ points, instead of having to score 80 himself.

Los Angeles 122, Toronto 104

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Kobe Bryant scored a staggering 81 points -- the second-highest total in NBA history -- and the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Toronto Raptors 122-104 Sunday night.

With the fans at Staples Center chanting "MVP! MVP!" Bryant made two free throws with 43.4 seconds remaining for his final points, putting him behind only Wilt Chamberlain on the all-time scoring list.

Chamberlain scored 100 points for Philadelphia against the New York Knicks at Hershey, Pa., on March 2, 1962. His second-highest total was 78 against the Lakers in three overtimes on Dec. 8, 1961.

"I couldn't even dream of this when I was a kid," Bryant said. "There was no way possible."

Bryant left to a standing ovation with 4.2 seconds remaining, having shot 28-of-46 from the floor and 18-of-20 from the foul line.

Elgin Baylor held the previous franchise record of 71 points at New York on Nov. 15, 1960.

Michael Jordan's career high was 69 points, and only three players had ever scored more than 70 -- Chamberlain, Baylor, and David Robinson.

The 27-year-old Bryant made it four.

He played nearly 42 minutes, going the entire second half until being lifted by coach Phil Jackson. He scored 27 points in the third quarter and 28 more in the fourth.

Bryant scored 62 points during a 112-90 victory over Dallas last month, but sat out the fourth quarter because of the one-sided nature of the game.

Like I said before, a win is a win, so I'm happy. And it's fun seeing an amazing performance.

But scoring 81 against the Raptors in January, is a lot different (and less impressive), than a player like Shaq hitting near a quadruple double in the NBA Finals, or hitting 40/20 in important playoffs games against championship caliber teams.

Now whether Lamar asserts himself or not is a matter that needs to be addressed, but we'll never know if Kobe is taking 46 shots in a game. I tell you what...this shit wouldn't work against the Spurs or Pistons...

Innocent until proven guilty, and last I checked, the charges were dropped, by the state, not the girl.

I don't care about the Colorado thing, but I figured in this forum anyone giving that title to a thread was implying something negative.

This 81 point night is awesome to be sure, but 100 is 100. Wilt is still the man. All other high scoring nights will pale in comparison until someone else hits triple digits. Both Wilt and Kobe had average teams around them, and nothing was on the line. If Kobe scores 81 on the Spurs in the playoffs and the Lakers win the game by 15, then yes, I'll be impressed.

It's entertaining to see though. I'm sure it will sell lots of tickets, so more power to him. From what I've seen of the Lakers this year I wouldn't want to be his teammate.

Now whether Lamar asserts himself or not is a matter that needs to be addressed, but we'll never know if Kobe is taking 46 shots in a game. I tell you what

If Lamar, would ask for the ball more, and say let me help, then he prob would get more shots.

But since hes continuing the 2 down step out of the way mantra, its only his own fault.

T Park

Did Wilt have the caliber of players that Kobe plays against??

Id love to see what Kobe would do against the piss poor players that Wilt went against when he put up 100.

And I do appreciate a great game, don't get me wrong. Kobe had to turn it on, because the Lakers were down 63 to 49 at halftime. Maybe what is going to happen is that this team is not going to be the "final product", and changes will happen to the team down the road.

I tell you what...this shit wouldn't work against the Spurs or Pistons...Kori needs to change your title to Shaq-fan. Kobe has had amazing performances in the Finals and important playoff games. Enjoy this win for what it was - a historic event.

And Lamar has had plenty of chances, he is way too passive. Kobe always starts the game passing the ball, he takes over the game when none of his teammates will hit. Lamar underachieved with the Clippers, the Heat and now the Lakers. He's not Pippen.

Kobe is MVP!

Hey, I didn't say that Kobe hasn't come up huge in the playoffs, just that there are other players who have worn the purple and gold who have brought it *more*.

He is definitely one of the top players in franchise history, no doubt. I'm just saying that players like Magic, Shaq, and Kareem are probably *better*.

If im not mistaken the entire first half they played as a team, no one was hitting shots, lamar odom was as usual being very passive. The begining of the third the lakers were playing horrible. Kobe brought the team back into the game.

Let's also not discredit the appearance of a laker defense in the 2nd half. That allowed kobe to do what he did.

Pistons < Spurs
01-23-2006, 12:42 AM
Maybe what is going to happen is that this team is not going to be the "final product", and changes will happen to the team down the road.

Well DUH'. The Lakers are an ugly and raw team right now. Of course the ideal situation is not to have Smush, Brown and Mihm as starters. That group should not win a playoff game. Kobe playing at his best, dropping 50+ on people may get you a first round win if you are lucky. But of course this is no "final product". Whoever thought it was? Jordan had a solid cast of players surrounding him in his day. Kobe does not. Lamar, as good as he can be, does not fit on this team, and will be traded at some point to bring better complimentary players.

Those who were at the GTG i was at know that i am not the biggest kobe fan by far, even though i am a laker fan. But the fact of the matter is his performance tonight was amazing.

I went back and read the posts i made in this thread and the funny thing is when i mentioned the comment about some need to go to the troll forum to bash on tpark it was never aimed at Brutalis. When someone is in here talking about T park jizzing because he is applauding a players performance its a bit lame.

I may have not agreed with your opinions Brutalis but those are yours. Also please believe that i can handle myself as far as it goes. You may want to go back and re-read the posts that i made and you may realize that you were being a bit over sensitive.

Anywho kobe's post game interview was very interesting when they tried to compare him to MJ. I really enjoyed how he handled that question and i was pleased to hear what came out of his mouth.

I may have been over-sensitive but when several people jump your ass for ignorant reasons. Who wouldnt be?

Kobe is an awesome player I have never in this thread demoralized or insulted his game. And if you didn't mean the troll thing towards me just don't use it when you quote and reply to me then, because that was just your mistake on that part then.

And, when one person rides the wave, and another jumps on. It's easy to become flustered. In which most people would have just left by now. But for one I don't appreciate TPark and seeing him once, again, bank on someone then not even continue the debate. That's nothing new. But as far as right now I do apolygize if I became over-sensitive with you. Like I said I don't appreciate several people jumping on eachothers back when the person who started it was wrong. Makes zero sense.

On the other hand. What singer isn't critized for his songs? That's the point. Someone mentioned hate and as you can see in replies I bring none. I hate nobody on this earth and in person am a very easy person to understand.

Again, sorry if your troll comment was not directed towards me, just don't quote me with it next time. Or, edit your post if it's not there anymore. That is all.

IMO, maybe, but Nash and Billup's performances this season are too great too overlook right now. If the Lakers had a better record, no question, he would have to be MVP.

Historically, the MVP has come from one of the teams with the best record in the NBA(usually top 2). I think that streak ends this year. Nash won't win back to back and Billups will get overlooked because the Pistons other starters are too good.

Man, your problem is you've been TOLD so many times you automatically throw any comments into the "the tpark hate basket" and completely avoid the point.

Again, I feel stupid for even going there with you when so many others went there and back. I am a complete fool for that.

And last but never the least, if ya bail on your team, nobody forgets. Ever. And no matter if you was drunk or just pissed from a loss there's no excuse. That's like punching your mom in a childish fight, there's some things you just don't do that nobody will ever forget and if you, can't handle that, and throw everything you don't like or agree with in your little tpark hate basket, that's your problem. Sorry I even replied to you, my horrible mistake.

I say go for the record scoring average of 50 something ppg Wilt had back in the day then. Doesn't mean he will hit half the shots the throws up but it's worth a shot against those Raptors caliber teams!

iminlakerland
01-23-2006, 01:43 AM
Phil Jackson wasn't to happy about it either. Like adidas and i were saying earlier it is a bit disheartening because the trend with this team continues with their stagnant offense.

But what is being overlooked is the flashes of defense the lakers showed in the 2nd half with the press, and the tough help defense. It was good to see and hopefully it carries on to other games.

I believe the lakers are coming up on a 7 game road trip after their game with golden state, they will be facing good teams, and we shall see how this team responds. They have to face Detroit, Knicks, Indiana, Dallas as well as other teams so it will be key how this team responds.

Say what you will about Kobe, but 81 points is just a ridiculous performance.

The entire Spurs team scored 4 more points today than Kobe did. He just about single-handedly outscored the Washington Wizards, too (82-81).

He isn't the greatest teammate and he does a lot of other things that understandably drive some people mad, but you cannot deny that Kobe Bryant is an amazingly talented individual player and I think you're just plain hating if you don't acknowledge that.

Recap from his media Q&A thanks to ClubLakers:

Kobe says it really hasnt sunk in (scoring 81) He said hed feel sick as a dog if they lost this game

Never thought in his dreams he would score that much. It just happens. Its one of those things. lol

Such a blessing to play for the Lakers org.

when asked when he knew he was feeling hot... said it wasnt until Lamar reminded him of how many points he could go for when he said to himself "Oh Sh--"

he feeds off the crowd and its good to put on a show for the fans. they saw him grow up now theyre seeing him as an older young man.

it really hasnt set in that he scored 81. its all about the W. thats why he turned it on (in the 3rd) then it just turned into something special. wanted to keep riding the wave and demoralize oponents and "just turned into this" says he cant admit to grasping the importance of a night like this yet. hasnt sunk in.

phil and him are on the same page. he knows calls before phil even makes calls. they just connect like that. "its like on some Jedi type of thing" (smiles). phil and him have been through so many battles.he plays the game to try and please phil. "if hes happy with my performance, it makesme happy because i learned the game from him. he taught me how to play. if im not playing the right way.... if hes dissapointed, i take it pretty hard." phil told kobe he was proud of the way he played tonight. it makes him feel good to hear that from phil.

Reporter asks: "Kobe are you sure the 81 points wasnt just a distraction from keeping us from asking you about those two missed free throws"
Kobe:"Ah, I was pissed about that!, Ah dude, I was so pissed (shaking his head smiling) "i wanted to continue that streak... but then... "I CHOKED" lol

Reporter asks does it put it in perspective to think that Michael Jordan never had a night like this?
Kobe: "nah, not really. ive been compared to him so many times and I just wished they would Just STOP. you know what i mean? Just Stop. he was Michael Jordan, Im Kobe Bryant, were two different players. i wish people would let it go. it really Annoys me. (laughs a little)
Reporter: "Why"
Kobe:you cant compare what im doing to what hes doing. hes one of the greatest players, if not THE greatest player of all time. its not fair for us as a youger generation to constantly be compared to such Greatness. from myself to LBJ and other young players, youre talkin about Magic, MJ, these guys . .. we cant measure up to them. its important for us to go out there and play the game we know how to play and hopefully people will enjoy what we do as players and not compared to what theyve done.

"THeres no comparison. Hes Jordan and Im Kobe. I wish people would stop trying to measure up what i do in comparison to what hes done. Let what i do just speak for itself.

Compared to Dallas, the points tonight were more gratifying cause "we needed them". lakers were down and needed to get out of hole they were in. "the points i put in the basket were instrumental for regaining that momentum and energy. It means way more (than the dallas game)

"i trained my but off this summer. i went pedal tot he metal. conditioning wise im ready (to take on the world :) ) i prepare myself for every game...i call Kwame and Chris my offensive line. they set incredible screens for me to free me up... its a collection of things. not just me scoring. i need help from my teammates.they set excellent screens for me. great passes. without them i couldnt score 81 points."
(Continued)

BORROWED FROM FATSAMS RECAP(Thanks FATSAM, hope its OK)

Magic said he'd seen a lot of basketball, but he'd never seen anything like this, he's proud of Kobe, don't listen to others criticizing him, just know I'm here to support you and I've got your bacck through everything.

Can you score 100?

Kobe:: "Oh, dude, are you kidding me? I guess it's possible, I don't know. That's unthinkable. It's exhausting to think about it."

Teammates & staf are asking Kobe to autograph stats sheets & such. Tremendous honor.

Reporter: "You have four days off -- you going out to celebrate?"

"Tonight I'll go home and gget some more therapy on my ankle and knee. Them tomorrow, make breakfast, watch cartoons -- Tom and Jerry."

Natalia is waiting for Daddy to give her her bath. Kobe laughs and leaves the podium.

If the Lakers find themselves out of the playoff hunt, they should just feed it to Kobe every time and see if they can get him 100. OK, they probably shouldn't, but I would find it entertaining. At this rate he's going to start to need to jack up 100 a night for the Lakers to have a chance of winning, he isn't getting any help from his teammates.

Kobe Bryant a basketball player that I hate just knock me off :pctoss

Amzing what he did! He put this team on his shoulders and won the game on his own.
It's a Raptors, it's a regular season but it's 81 points. Eighty one. :wow Wilt needed 17 more FGA to score 100 and 7 more minutes.
Misty you can buy the newspaper but maybe it won't be the one you will show your grandchildren. Kobe can go for a hundred. He is capable to do this.
I wonder what Mike thinks abuot that.
Is Shaq still at Florida?
Godness :angel

I never thought it will happen in near future. The leauge has changed. 3 guard have above 30 PPG. But what Kobe is doing that is so frickin' crazy. :drunk

And those 7 Kobe points from the 3pt range. :lol

Bird, King, Nique, Drex, Mike, all had the 3pt line. If you are able to do this. You do this.

Elgin was not also tending to score from the 23 feet out.

Who else? Maybe West. But he is not in top 13 (I'll check later whee is his scoring record)
Thompson Maybe would have 80- something point in that Gervin matchup.

But come on Who else? And FG% is insaine.

And as I said from the people who saw the game he was something above 80. More or less.

Well Tim Duncan or Kareem Abdul jabbar or Shaquille O'neal through their career had the 3pt line. And they even can't get the 70 pts. Damn Timmy can't get through 20 this year many times.

Damn Shoogar, I never would have guessed you'd fall for all those rumors and crap. Granted, Kobe the person (adulter) is not so great, but I don't get why people seem to think he doesn't want to championships only individual glory. To me, what makes Kobe a great basketball player is that he's relentless, he'll do anything to win and isn't afriad to shoot in the clutch. Guys like him and AI get this rep for being selfish, when in reality, they're stuck on really bad teams and in the end just want to win.
