Spurs notebook: Parker, Longoria to be on 'Oprah'

OKLAHOMA CITY — Tony Parker will take a day off from improving his jump shot to work on his Q rating.

Parker will fly to Chicago today to appear on "Oprah" with girlfriend Eva Longoria. :lol He thinks the episode will air sometime in February.

"I'm doing this more for Eva," Parker said. "I know it's a big thing for her, and she really loves Oprah (Winfrey).

"It's a good experience for me. I'll just enjoy myself and support Eva."

Longoria, who stars on "Desperate Housewives," and Parker have been dating for more than a year. The two met after a Spurs' game last season.

Parker's father grew up in Chicago, and his two brothers also attended school there.

"So my family knows this is a really big deal," Parker said. "I've watched the show sometimes since I've been in the (United) States, but they don't know too much about it France.

"I was talking to my friend and I said, 'I'm doing Oprah.' He said, 'Oprah? Who's Oprah?'"

Parker doubts he'll be talking too much about the Spurs.

"I'll guess they'll just want to talk about our relationship," Parker said.

Any chance he'll propose on the show?

"Noooo," he said, laughing.

On the mend: Robert Horry and Manu Ginobili didn't accompany the Spurs on their trip, and coach Gregg Popovich is unsure whether either player will be available for Saturday's home game against Minnesota.

"I wouldn't say there's a good chance," Popovich said. "Just a chance."

Horry has missed the past five games with a lower abdominal strain. Ginobili was expected to miss one to two weeks after spraining his right ankle in Friday's victory in Miami.

Welcome back: Melvin Sanders needed only 12 tickets for family and friends Wednesday night, a modest number considering he played at Oklahoma State three years ago.

Sanders' mother, brother and sister drove in from Arkansas, where he grew up. Since leaving college, Sanders has made Oklahoma City his offseason home, working out here with former teammates during the summer.

Sanders, who is on a 10-day contract with the Spurs, went undrafted out of college. He's always had NBA aspirations but never thought they would lead him back to the state of Oklahoma.

"It's funny seeing Oklahoma City mentioned with an NBA team," Sanders said.

Sanders played the final five minutes of Wednesday's game and made his first shot. It was the first time his mother had seen him play in person.

"It was nice to be in front of the home crowd," Sanders said. "It was fun."

Home sweet home: Oklahoma City might be new to the NBA, but the fans here already have made an impression on the rest of the league.

Minnesota's Kevin Garnett called the Ford Center — where the fans roar for each hustle play and stand until the Hornets make their first basket — "another world" after playing here for the first time. The Spurs made similar comments about the crowd's energy after their visit last month.

The Hornets' goal is to bottle that energy and take it on the road, where they are 8-14.

"It takes a group a certain amount of time to develop that toughness on the road to move up the ranks," Popovich said. "You can't expect those guys to be doing that right now. What they've already done is surpass most people's expectations.

"(Hornets coach) Byron (Scott) and his staff have done a great job, and players have reacted well to what he's trying to teach. The on-the-road stuff will happen in good time. They have the kind of character on that club that it will develop."

Briefly: The 66 points the Spurs' reserves scored in Tuesday's 104-76 victory over Charlotte were the most by the team's bench since it had 68 against Dallas on April 21, 1991. How long ago was that? February is sweeps month, "Desperate Housewives" is the most popular show on TV and Eva is one of the main characters that people associate with it. I'm sure it was the producers of the show who were trying every trick in the book to get one of their stars onto Oprah. I'm not an Eva fan, but I'm not a hater either, and I don't see every move she makes as being the latest scheme of a calculating b*tch. I'm actually happy for Tony, because he's gonna get a lot of new fans out of this.

They didn't say anything about Tony on that preview, so I don't know if this is the same show or not. Unfortunately, they did not give a date for the show, just "Coming Soon".

Anyway, Nate Berkus is the interior decorator (regular on Oprah's show, does some fantastic work) who was in Sri Lanka when the tsunami hit. He lost everything he had with him, including his partner. He stayed there for several days hoping to hear from his partner, but the body was never found. It was a heartbreaking story. He's very popular in Chicago.

They showed Nate and Eva walking up the sidewalk into a house, so maybe Nate has redecorated a place for Eva and/or Tony.

It didn't look like he was going nuts. He was just sitting next to Eva in his little suit (from what I remember) smiling and answering Oprah questions. The part they show on the preview Tony has this HUGE smile. Just adorable.
