Here's an interesting comparison done by 82games.com on the NBA's best at drawing offensive fouls. Many are willing to stand and deliver, but less are willing to stand and get delivered. You must also have a card with the Screen Actors Guild.

Manu, Bruce and Robert are the Spurs' best. Here is the article, data and link to other interesting combinations:

"Taking the Charge" in NBA Basketball

There are some obvious individual measures that should without doubt be part of the official NBA statistics -- with some form of plus/minus data topping the list for us. However an even easier number to introduce would be foul drawing, and fans would relish and indeed have been clamoring to see data on which NBA players draw the most offensive fouls from their opponents.

If you can handle "un-official" statistics (which is to say we're missing video for parts of a handful of games and have some to be expected variance in data collection to begin with), then keep reading!

Leading NBA Players in drawing Offensive Fouls

For the NBA 2005-06 season to this point and with the aforementioned caveats, here are your league leaders:

2005-06 Season thru Jan. 29th
Rank Team Player Off.Fouls
Drawn
1 PHO Bell 50
2 UTA Collins 41
3 CHI Nocioni 33
4 GSW Dunleavy 30
5 NJN Krstic 29
6 PHI Iverson 28
7 NOK Mason 27
8 PHO Thomas 27
9 MEM Battier 26
10 MIL Bogut 26
11 NOK Claxton 26
12 SAC Miller 26
13 WAS Haywood 26
14 GSW Fisher 25
15 IND O'Neal 25
16 TOR Bosh 25
17 CHI Hinrich 22
18 SAS Ginobili 22
19 BOS Pierce 21
20 MIN Hudson 21
21 PHO Nash 21
22 DET B.Wallace 20
23 MIA Haslem 20
24 PHI Iguodala 20
25 DEN Najera 19
26 NYK Taylor 19
27 TOR Peterson 19
28 DEN Miller 18
29 POR Khryapa 18
30 SAS Bowen 18

We were expecting it to be very tight at the top with not a lot of separation, but as it turns out, we have a runaway leader in Raja Bell of the Suns, followed by one main chaser in part time player Jarron Collins of the Jazz.
It's an interesting mix, so let's try a little grouping.

"Little Big Men" -- height challenged Offensive Stars with a reputation for toughness
- Iverson, Ginobili, Nash, Andre Miller

Real Deal all around talents with the built bodies to match their willingness to step up
- Brad Miller, Jermaine O'Neal, Bosh, Pierce

Defensive Specialists/Gritty guys who don't mind doing the "dirty work"
- Collins, Nocioni, Kurt Thomas, Battier, Haywood, Fisher, Ben Wallace, Haslem, Iguodala, Najera, Mo Taylor, Khryapa, Bruce Bowen

Often overlooked/Quiet game types
Bell, Dunleavy, Krstic, Mason, Bogut, Claxton, Hinrich, Hudson, Peterson

It's pretty safe to say that all of the players on this list are winners in a sense, with the right attitude to the game and thus good guys to have on a team.

Indeed, 23 of the top 30 charge takers have positive on court/off court ratings. The character of a player to "take one for the team" is often discussed, but hard to quantify...offensive fouls drawn may be a good place to start.

Since a number of the "enforcers" of the NBA and hustle players who do often seem to be the first to put their bodies in the way of an oncoming player (and let's be honest, we're talking freight trains in some cases) don't play extensive minutes, it makes sense to look at the leaders on an offensive fouls drawn on a Foul Drawn per X Minutes" basis.

Minimum: 10 Offensive Fouls Drawn Rank Team Player Off.Fouls Drawn Minutes/Off.Foul Drawn
1 UTA Collins 41 24.2
2 MIN Madsen 14 26.1
3 SEA Fortson 10 27.6
4 NYK Taylor 19 31.9
5 ATL Ivey 11 32.1
6 PHO Bell 50 32.7
7 CHI Harrington 15 33.0
8 CHI Nocioni 33 34.2
9 POR Khryapa 18 34.4
10 MIN Hudson 21 37.4
11 SAS Ginobili 22 38.3
12 NOK Andersen 14 40.7
13 NJN Jackson 10 40.7
14 WAS Haywood 26 41.5
15 NJN Krstic 29 42.9

Yeah, maybe this look was a bit of an excuse to give a send off to the "Bird Man" Chris Andersen, who will hopefully find happier days ahead.
Still the top two in raw total show up well, placing #1 and #6 in rate of drawing the charge despite twice as many offensive fouls drawn as the other members of the upper echelon.

We do also add a few of the names that would be most guessed for this kind of activity -- the Madsen, Fortson, and Othella Harringtons of the NBA.

Team by Team Leaders in drawing Offensive Fouls

All right, the league leaders are fun, but you want to know who's been getting knocked to the floor most often on a team by team basis, and also whether offensive fouls have any correlation with team success.

The Phoenix Suns have really been one of the two top team stories of the season along with Detroit's magnificent performance. The thing is that the mainstream is still thinking Phoenix is the uber-offense, no defense team of a year ago, when in fact they are playing a different style of game nowadays. Last year for instance, we had them drawing 135 offensive fouls on the season, which they have already surpassed at slightly past the halfway point this season!

Now before you get too excited Phoenix fans, it's worth noticing that of the top ten teams in offensive fouls drawn, only one of the six powerhouse clubs at the moment (.600+ winning pct) are in the list, and the mighty Pistons are actually 4th from the bottom. Indeed, a bunch of the top ten are likely to miss the playoffs! On the other hand, last year's eventual NBA champion Spurs were the #1 team in "net offensive fouls"...just like the 'running Suns' are this year.

We'll have a lot more to say about fouls in future articles (picture things like "Flop %" and "Kings of the Loose Ball collisions"), but to summarize it looks like this:

1. players who are among the leaders in offensive fouls drawn are likely to have positive on court/off court influence
2. the correlation between team totals for drawing offensive fouls and net offensive fouls to wins is limited
3. it takes one bad ass/crazy dude to stand in the way of an NBA superstar driving full speed to the basket!

I find it interesting that teamwise, many of the better defensive teams in the NBA such as San Antonio, LA Clippers, Detroit, Houston, and Indiana are all toward the bottom half of the list at drawing charges.

I wonder why that is?

I'd like to see these stats from the playoffs last year.

I don't know? Maybe against good defensive teams, it's more difficult to penetrate : less penetration => less charges ?

I imagine because of the way our defense is supposed to work, force teams to take jump shots, and funnel the guards toward the basket where the goal of our big men is to block, or at least defend and make the shot as difficult as possible, kind of tricking the offensive player into thinking they are going to get a decent shot, until the last second, or forcing them to take the shot further out than they wanted to.

With that said, it does seem like our ability to draw charges is down this year from last, that being due to our lack of hustle until recently. And of course Manu has been out quite a few games, he is normally the guy that is gonna flo...ahem, draw the charge for us. Manu has 34 games and missed 13, and played limited minutes in others, so the 22 charges drawn is a little misleading. He would probably be at about 30 if he had not missed the games.

Has anyone ever seen Rasho take a charge?

This website (82games.com) is amazing. All of these "hidden" stats make the game a lot funner, in my opinion. I especially like the stat of "who gets blocked the most..."

He drew a charge in last night's game.

Didn't see that, did he just happen to be in the way, or did he hustle to get there??

Actually, I was j/k on that one, I have seen him take some punishment a few times.
