Here in San Antonio ... and/or knows a good Doctor that specializes in that kind of thing? I really don't know WTH kind of doctor I'm supposed to go to and don't want to just throw a dart at my insurance provider list. :lol

You would likely have to go through your primary care provider first and then have a referral through your HMO. Orthopods love to cut...it is what they do. You may have a knee problem that can be managed more clinically/empirically and skip the blade for now ( and the huge $$). I know a good Family Practice doc in the SA area that I worked with while in the AF.

What are your symptoms? What have you tried? If you want, fire me a PM and I will see if I can help you out.

Intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid can be done by FP/General Medicine. Those are great for osteoarthritis and last several months at about 500-750 a pop. Just a thought. Don't know of too many doing them, but I can ask my colleague in SA.

He's a very nice man with a good demeanor. Hopefully he can treat you (or at least refer you to someone in his group).

John had to see Dr. Schmidt when he had knee problems as well. He's a distance runner and a big guy, so it was tons of impact to the area daily. They got us in very quickly, he was a super nice guy and answered questions patiently. Always a plus for a doctor in my book!

Thanks, that's definitely good to know...I haven't had to find a new doctor for anything in years. :)

And another plus (big plus) ... he is in the Humana network. :tu :lol

huh?

Having health insurance to cover something that could potentially cost thousands is supposed to make me...a what?

SpursWoman
02-04-2006, 07:58 PM
I also have no problems with Humana because they covered 100% of the $75,000 worth of hospitals bills my mom racked up before she died....with zero problems whatsoever.

I really don't understand your point. That I'm not supposed to have health insurance because Wal-mart endorses them so it's not cool? Or that I'm supposed to go somewhere else and pay twice as much for coverage when I don't have to? I've had coverage from different companies that have been nothing but bullshit from the get-go. I've never had problems with Humana.

Or did someone just dare you to use "sphex wasp" in a sentence?

My knees are kinda bad. I had tendinitis in my right knee and I probably have it in my left, my left knee has been acting up a lot since I started playing basketball at my college. Especially Tuesday when I played full court as hard as I can for 2 straight hours.

SpursWoman

I rarely ever go to the doctor, I guess I am just tough or something. I don't care if I get hurt or not, I just get back up or keep doing whatever. Unless it is broken then that is something different. Yet I have only broken a bone once and that was when I played football, I was out a week or 2 then played with a cast. :)

I don't either ... but I work on the second floor of a building with no elevator, and it's been murder on the stairs.

I also need to get back to the gym, but it's hard to get motivated when I can't do my two favorite things...which are kickboxing & step aerobics. So I don't have a whole lot of options.

I'd probably recommend that you go see a Physical Medicine & Rehab doctor first if you didn't clearly have a surgical problem.

:fro Just of curiosity, what is your condition?

I had a broken ACL and lost 75% of my meniscus on my left knee due to a ski accident. I had surgery and recovered almost 100% after proper physical therapy and a training program (your knee will never be that same though).

It is absolutely critical that you keep in shape and/or lose weight if you are overweight for most knee related injuries. Bicycling is a very good excercise for knees.

It is recommended that you hit the gym and do free weights to develope your quadriceps, in particular the lower quad muscles that insert in the knee (doing squats with a free barbell on your shoulders between 45 and 80 degrees is a very good excercise, don't exceed 80 degrees though!). Of course, please consult a doctor before you start training http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/images/smilies/smispin.gif

I sliced my left patellar tendon nearly in half. I saw an ortho doc that was on Stone Oak Parkway, but I can't remember his name..

He was really cool and he referred me to a rehab place that treated me for months free of charge because they wouldn't take my insurance, but he wanted them to treat me (part owner maybe?). Anyway I really liked him and he actually didn't want to do surgery as a first option.

Hope you get better....

I recommend Dr Goletz. He treated me way back in 1988 and I never did have any problems with my right knee(Until I had an accident a year ago on a vehicle accident scene). My mother has worked with him in the OR... and he is not knife/scapel happy. IMO the BEST Orthopedic Surgeon in the US is Dr. Morganstern in Chicago, Il. which my mother also worked with him in the OR for many years. Got relatives up north? Good Luck SW!!!

I don't have much either, and I used to sound like popcorn popping when I'd go up and down stairs. The pain came and went, but was especially bad when we'd have bad/rainy weather, even in the summertime. My pain has diminished considerably and I'm not so noisy on the stairs since I have been taking glucosamine and chondroitin every day. And, before I started taking it, the bursitis in my right shoulder was so bad I could not reach across the truck and roll the window down (or up) - I'd have to get out and walk around there if someone riding with me left the window down. I have virtually NO PAIN in my shoulders now, since I started the glucosamine regimen. My doctor advised me against taking it, said I needed surgery on my knees (at least one of them) right away. But, I had a friend who was on crutches, and about to have to start using a wheelchair part-time, on account of his knees. He started using glucosamine (which HIS doctor recommended!) and he's nearly painfree now.

I still may have to have surgery someday, but not as long as this is working.

SpursWoman

No, there is no elevator. :lol :lol

Which sucks when getting up and down the stairs is very painful. One of our IT guys had a really bad motorcycle accident a few months ago and his leg was crushed. They had to move his office downstairs until he was able to make it on his own. There's another lady that has horrendous rheumatoid arthirtis, and it takes her about 15 minutes to get up them. :(

Thank you!! :elephant

I was trying to remember what the hell the name of that stuff was all weekend. I remember both my mom & the trainer I used to work with recommended it a while back and I was going to give that a shot, too, but couldn't remember the name of it. :lol

Yeah, I buy the Member's Mark brand that contains both glucosamine and chondroitin at Sam's, it's a lot cheaper than MoveFree or the other name brands and I think it's just as effective.

One other thing, SpursWoman: I have another friend who lives in Kentucky and raises horses (her pain comes from a riding accident years ago) who tried the tablet form that I take and it didn't work at all for her. Someone else she knows suggested she try the liquid form and she has proclaimed it a MIRACLE. But it is a little more expensive. So, if you try the tablets and they don't work, give the liquid a shot.

i had to go through a lot of rehab, just to learn to walk again....i still dont walk right to an extent cause of it, the dr even said that i might need surgery sometime in the future on my left knee now cause everyone tends to put more weight on the knee that isnt injured after they fix it

It just depends on what you have to have done. If it's just a scope, then you'll being driving pretty quickly. My daughter had both a scope and an open procedure and was up and around in a couple of days. She had to wear the brace thing for 2-3 weeks. But she would just pop it off when we got in the car and put it on when we got out and use her crutches to keep from bearing to much weight on it. But depending on what you have done, they might let you start bearing weight immediately. She went to rehab at a wonderful place on Stone Oak Pkwy. If I ever need rehab I want to go there. They are terrific.
