Coastguard in search for cocklers

A full scale search is under way in south west Scotland after reports said 20 Polish cockle pickers could be trapped by an incoming tide.
It is believed the group are in the Solway Firth near Annan in Dumfriesshire.

The search is being co-ordinated by the Liverpool Coastguard.

Coastguard spokesman Graham Parr said that so far rescue teams including helicopters, police and life boats had not located anyone.

The cocklers are believed to have gone out onto the sands in the Solway Firth at 2000 GMT on Sunday.

Other Polish cocklers came ashore earlier after being contacted by mobile phone, but 20 remained unaccounted for, reports said.
