Brazil to broadcast games on Web
SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- The NBA is increasing its presence in Brazil by allowing the country to be the first to webcast live games on the Internet.
NBA Latin America announced Monday it has signed a three-year contract with a local Web portal Globoesporte.com to broadcast two live games a week, beginning on Tuesday with the game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks.
Globoesporte is part of Globo.com, which is owned by Brazil's Organizacoes Globo, Latin America's largest media company.
"We broadcast NBA highlights all over the world, but Brazil will be the first country to be able to broadcast live games," said Vincent Burniske, director of television and marketing for NBA Latin America. "We want to reach out to fans in every media platform."
Brazilian fans will have to pay about $5 (euro4) monthly to subscribe to the service and watch the games.
"Hopefully this will stimulate the appearance of new talents in Brazil," said former NBA Most Valuable Player Award winner and basketball Hall of Fame member Julius Erving, who was in the country to help promote the new service.
There are currently four Brazilians in NBA: Denver Nuggets' forward Nene, Phoenix Suns' guard Leandro Barbosa, Cleveland Cavaliers' forward Anderson Varejao and Toronto Raptors' center Rafael Araujo.
ESPN International already broadcasts two live matches per week on local cable networks.
The NBA has brought several initiatives to Brazil in recent years, including the "Basketball Without Borders" training camp, for some of the best youth players from 20 Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Burniske said the NBA is already in negotiations "to bring a preseason match to Brazil in the short term."
