Shortly after President Bush concluded his speech in which he described a foiled attack on LA's tallest building, Fox News aired numerous images from the 1996 film Independence Day showing the reported target of the attack -- the Library Tower, now known as the U.S. Bank Tower -- being destroyed by alien invaders.

On the February 9 edition of CNN Live Today, anchor Daryn Kagan also noted that the tower "was depicted as being blown up" in Independence Day, but, unlike Fox, CNN did not show movie images of the building being attacked.

L.A. Mayor Blindsided by Bush Announcement


LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said Thursday he was blindsided by President Bush's announcement of new details on a purported 2002 hijacking plot aimed at a downtown skyscraper, and described communication with the White House as "nonexistent."

"I'm amazed that the president would make this (announcement) on national TV and not inform us of these details through the appropriate channels," the mayor said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I don't expect a call from the president _ but somebody."

The mayor also suggested that some funding from the Iraq war could be redirected to homeland security, including the protection of high-risk targets in Los Angeles. He did not advocate an immediate withdrawal of troops.

"I go to work every day knowing that we are a target," the mayor said.

You'd have a point -- er, second point -- if the President had claimed this attack was foiled as a result of the NSA Program.


Their plot was derailed in early 2002 when a Southeast Asian nation arrested a key al Qaeda operative. Subsequent debriefings and other intelligence operations made clear the intended target, and how al Qaeda hoped to execute it.
I'm just guessing that the "subsequent debriefings" didn't involve hiring a lawyer for the terrorist and asking him, pretty please, to reveal the plot...but, more to the point, it didn't require a FISA warrant or employment of the NSA warrantless intercepts.
