on other messegeboards ive seen that they have like a "buddy list" type thing and so as soon as you log on it will show you if the people youve designated as "buddies" are online/offline

in response to your stalking question though the answer is "oh gee!" and "mr. peabody"

You can add people to your buddy list and then it puts a "+" next to their name on the who's online, so you can see them online.

Click on anyone's name. Then it gives you the option to add them to your buddy list or ignore list.
