“Don’t mess with me Condoleezza. Don’t mess with me, girl,” Chavez said during his weekly Sunday broadcast, sarcastically offering her a kiss and jokingly referring to her as “Condolence.”
The warning comes days after Rice described Venezuela as one of the “biggest problems” for the Western Hemisphere and promised to develop regional alliances as part of an “inoculation” strategy to expose what the State Department calls anti-democratic behavior in Venezuela.
Chavez, a former soldier turned populist leader, has promised to create socialist revolution in Venezuela and promote regional integration in Latin America to roll back U.S.-supported economic reforms.
The State Department says Chavez is using the nation’s bountiful oil wealth to meddle in the affairs of neighboring countries, and has slammed him for boosting ties to U.S. foes like Cuba and Iran.
MSNBC (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9924691/print/1/displaymode/1098/)
From another article:
Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez is one of the biggest dangers facing Latin America, Washington has said.
US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice said Mr Chavez was trying to influence others away from democracy, and called for a united front against him.
President Chavez responded by accusing the US of aggression, saying "world opinion is with Venezuela".
Addressing a congressional hearing on Thursday, Ms Rice accused Mr Chavez of leading a "Latin brand of populism that has taken countries down the drain".

Condolense should check the books again. Maybe she was looking at the U.S. books under the current WH? Venezuela has a multi-billion dollar surplus that it is investing internally.

Something to think about. If there WERE a model under which socialism could work, it would be in a country with a money tree, i.e. oil exports.

Dan... nevermind. Yet again you comment on shit you have ABSOLUTELY no clue about. Ever lived under a socialist regime, on such as Chavez? You think Venezuela's economy is booming?? THEY PRODUCE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! All of Venezuela's money comes from oil. Right now, everyone's happy because oil prices are sky high, but wait 'till the prices go down, and they will. Chavez is going to have a hard time explaining to his "voters" that he flushed the country down the toilet.

Chavez isn't socialist for christ sake, he is a populist. That means he has no "right or wrong" moral, or "left or right" ideas, everything he does is to keep and build power.
His rhetoric is based on Latin American independency, a strong anti-US posture, and communist social and economical politics. Of course in the real world he sells oil to the best offer no matter where the money comes from, as any capitalist would do.

I wouldn't call myself a supporter, but I think that in a country with resources such as Venezuala, socialism can be a good thing. Capatilists would just hoard all the income from it and a larger number of people would be terribly poor. I don't really know how it is for the people in the country, and would be open to any first hand info. Also, I would hate to see another war just because they are not capatilists. Fuck the domino theory. If the system sucks so bad, why would so many dominoes fall. Rich white people are just afraid of losing control of their third world cash cows.

oh did you just get back from conducting that poll ?
Funny how the socialists - these self-appointed leaders of this form of government live high on the hog while the commoners suffer. of course Castro wants to change the constitution and Chavez - who might be the biggest idiot on the planet- writing checks his behind can't cash promotes this type of government - it keeps him semi-popular with the people - he still can wallow in the state of corruption he thrives in catering to those with lots of money who he deems worthy to participate in this corruption and the people who are less educated think it is wonderful that Chavez entitles them to health care - food - etc when in reality he is stealing all of the peoples money.

What???
OK, I accept that the first period of Alfonsin (president 1983-1989) was a little bit center-left... just a little bit. But that was mainly beacuse we came from the dictatorship of the 76-83 and to me, most of the things that could be considered "lefty" were fair enough (Military Junta trials, etc, etc).
Peron during the begining of the 70s.... we all know thats populism, like Chavez. Could be considered as "lefty" by most right-wingers, so no surprise there.
I know you didnt mean Argentina as a socialist country (although you are saying "as close as i got"), so this answer is mainly to gtownspur. He knows shit about Argentina.

the popular masses of Venezuela are with Chavez, that's a fact no matter how the US wants to twist it. So Chavez is rightfully in power. Now, he might be secretly eliminating his opponets, that is most likely true, but this thing happens all the time all over the world.

I agree, look at China. Socially, people are still as repressed as ever, but wages are so low that in a NAFTA-filled, free market world economy they will easily out-produce any other country. This is the real danger in China’s growing dominance.

One of the more accurate assessments.
His threats to cut off the biggest buyer of his oil are hot air. He has made a lot of promises to keep himself in power and wouldn't be able to pay for those promises if he did that.

Well, i hope you dont wet your argentinian panties over our supreme power. Why should we invade you?
If you dont care what's going on in venezuela, and you dismiss political assasinations as ok because they happen all the time, then i should expect you to wear knee pads and bow to the US because we're a superpower and according to you we're practicing imperialism, which must i remind you happens all the time.
So if you dont care about dictators oppressing dissidents, you shouldn't give a rats ass about a country oppressing that very same dictator, unless you think that leftist ideology is the evil twin of poetic justice.
But go ahead. Just because a populist dictatorship is somewhat close to your leftist ideology, you don't have to support as if it's the only thing carry water for your pathetic viewpoint.
