21st February, 2006 - 10:51 pm
Christopher Reina/RealGM - A source close to the participants in the talks told Christopher Reina late Tuesday night that New York and Minnesota are in serious and ongoing discussions about a deal which would send Kevin Garnett to the Knicks in exchange for Penny Hardaway and Channing Frye. Isiah Thomas, who has called Frye untouchable all season, is willing to give up the sought after rookie to land the future Hall of Famer.

Garnett has made it clear to the front office that should he be dealt, he wants to go to New York and that wish will be fulfilled if the Timberwolves decide to end the KG era and begin to rebuild. They reportedly respect Garnett and all that he has done for both the franchise and the area not to trade him to his preferred team.

The question of if the Wolves want to move on without Garnett will be the deciding factor in whether a trade gets completed before Thursday.

This deal delayed last week's Knicks discussions with the Magic regarding Steve Francis and it is why it will be Jamal Crawford and Maurice Taylor going to Orlando for their first time, instead of Hardaway’s second. That deal is all but complete, but Orlando is waiting to see if Denver returns to the table before the deadline.

If the Wolves choose to retain Garnett, the Knicks will turn to Denver and Kenyon Martin, a player that Larry Brown covets. [READ]

KG for Hardaway and Frye? Man that would be just about the worst trade of all time I'd have to say. Poor Wolves.

Frye's number seem good for a 2nd year player, but I don't know what Mchale would see in him in that would = a KG type player. Anfernee Hardaway is getting new injuries everyday, so he doesn't really count. Anybody have contract figures?

KG
Marbury
Francis

Would be interesting.

If they get KG, they're not getting Francis. Penny is the contract ballast in both prospective trades....

Wolves should try to get rid of Jaric at the same time if they are going to keep Casey. As it is they won't get quite enough cap room trading only KG to make it worthwhile.

If New York pulls off both of these trades, their lineup could look like this:

1-Francis >>> N Robinson
2-Marbury >>> Q Richardson >>> Qyntel Woods
3-J Rose >>> D Lee >>> T Ariza
4-Garnett >>> D Lee >>> J Butler
5-Curry >>> James >>> J Butler

That starting 5 could pretty damn good........if there wasn't so many issues/ego's...especailly w/ Starbury and Francis. And How would LB coach all of these characters?

I remember him as being the next Jordan or Kobe...then, he just like...fell off the earth.

The current proposal, according to the person, would send guard Jamal Crawford, forward Maurice Taylor and possibly the swingman Trevor Ariza to Orlando. The Knicks would obtain Francis and forward Pat Garrity.

Penny Hardaway's expiring contract, which the Knicks have sought to use in a number of potential deals, would not be included in the Francis trade.

Every season one-third of the NBA media coverage is about how the Knicks are going to land every star player under the sun for nothing. The other two-thirds are about what Kobe just said about Shaq and vice versa.

Perhaps not cap space, but fiscal sanity. He's at $18 mil per this season and that's going up by a couple of mil next season and the two after that. That's a rather large amount for one player, especially when that player isn't exactly a guarantee for making the postseason, as last season and this one attest.

Knicks have two first round picks in this upcoming draft, San Antonio's (Nazr trade) and Denver's first round via Toronto (Antonio Davs / Jalen Rose trade). Isiah could use either or both in a trade. Neither is restricted from being dealt.

I will say that the Wolves deserve to lose picks if they give Garnett up for next to nothing.

Average 16,003 Rank 25
Percentage 86.7 Rank 20

KG isn't helping the organization as a ticket seller, and the franchise is not winning with him as their guy. At $18 Mil, it's not unthinkable that they would move him. I just wonder how much lower the attendance will go.

Example:
Player A $5 Mil -FOR- Player B $3.5 Mil + 1st Rd Pick $1 Mil?
