USA has virtually no pen, and when we get to the showdown with the D.R. those hitters can easily make up 3-4 runs in any given inning, so thats what im worried about.

Well obviously they must be pretty good if they beat the USA.

21-year-old Baltimore Orioles prospect Adam Loewen will lead a group of young pitchers into Canada’s second World Baseball match-up against the United States this afternoon.

The 6’5”, 225-pound left-hander will start the game on the mound for Canada, who is 1-0 after defeating South Africa Tuesday night in Scottsdale, Arizona.

“Adam has a lot of talent coming out of that arm,” said Canadian Manager Ernie Whit of the fourth selection in the 2001 MLB draft. “He’s got tremendous stuff and the Americans have never seen him before, so I’m confident he can go out there and do very well.”
That dude is fucking solid, he shut down the USA line-up.

U.S. team gets right result with Mexico's win over Canada

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Johnny Damon and his U.S. teammates had a hard time figuring out exactly what needed to happen for the Americans to advance in the World Baseball Classic.

It was complicated -- and it all worked out fine for the U.S. team on Thursday night when Mexico scored four runs in the top of the first inning of a 9-1 victory over Canada.

"This tiebreaker stuff, you've got to go to school for it," Damon, the New York Yankees' latest superstar addition, said in the Scottsdale Stadium dugout before a workout earlier in the day. "I thought there would be a clear-cut winner and a clear-cut loser. ... It's definitely a weird feeling."

After losing to Canada 8-6 in a first-round game Wednesday night, Team USA's fate Thursday was in the hands of the Canadians and Mexicans.

If Canada had won and the United States defeated South Africa on Friday, the Americans would reach next week's second round in Anaheim, Calif. Even if the U.S. team were to lose to South Africa, it would have to get beat by more than seven runs because Team USA has the tiebreaker against Mexico after its 2-0 win Tuesday.

Even with Mexico's win, Team USA could move on because Mexico scored at least three runs. Mexico ended that suspense with four straight doubles off Canada starter Jeff Francis to take a 4-0 lead.

The three-way tiebreaker is based on runs allowed.

In this odd system, the United States would've been eliminated -- before it played South Africa -- if Mexico had beaten Canada by scores of 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1.

It made for a tense day for the U.S. squad, with most players making plans to monitor the game.

"Most guys are reflecting on the tiebreaker scenario -- 'What's the scenario?' Obviously we never talked about the tiebreaker scenario before the tournament," manager Buck Martinez said. "We have to win and get some help. These are the perils of international play."

Roger Clemens is set to pitch for Team USA on Friday at Scottsdale Stadium, though most players on the team wished they could play again Thursday and get a chance to bounce back from the demoralizing performance against Canada.

Martinez compared the feeling to losing a playoff game in October.

"It was almost worse," reliever Joe Nathan of the Minnesota Twins said. "It's like this feeling that you just let a whole lot of people down. I know for myself, I don't want to feel that way again."

Damon believes South Africa, an inexperienced team featuring some teenagers, might head home thrilled to say it faced The Rocket before he called it a career.

"As bad as it sounds, being struck out by Roger Clemens is not a bad thing," Damon said with a grin.

The 43-year-old Clemens doesn't plan to go easy on anybody -- even if South Africa is probably way overmatched.

"As far as pitching inside, if our report says that some guy can't handle the ball inside and you can get them out that way, of course you'd pitch inside," said Clemens, who sounds like he's leaning toward retirement. "I wouldn't be here at the (WBC) if I didn't feel like I could compete and compete at a high level. I wanted to make sure I was ready for this. ...

"But, you know, I don't see myself starting this season unless something really, really kicks to where I get that edge. I'm just trying to fade away a little bit."

The worst part is even if the guy had left a full second later it wouldn't have mattered because the throw was off line. It's bush league of the manager to protest the call, and it's sickening that they called the guy out, because it clearly was, if nothing else, not blatant enough to overturn. It's too bad that we have to cheat to win. It's hard to bad mouth other countries for doing it when it looks like we're going to start doing it too.

I don't know that the fact that the players are paid well is what made the difference in that tournament.

I do think, though, that the tournament exposes an inherent problem in American sports -- the lingering effects of the Sports Center mentality. Team USA struggled in the WBC because it couldn't do little things well: they didn't run the bases well, they didn't catch the ball well, and they couldn't advance runners. I think that is the result of having a generation of players who have seen that stardom comes not from doing those sorts of things, but from doing spectacular things -- hitting the ball out of the park, in particular. When Team USA couldn't get the long ball, they had no short game, so to speak, to carry them through. Couple that with some poor defense, which made the pitchers get extra outs, and with pitching that was pretty shaky on a number of occasions (paging Dontrelle Willis), and the Americans just couldn't do the things that must be done to win. The Koreans, by comparison, do those things extremely well and haven't yet been beaten.

I don't think it helped Team USA to have Buck Martinez at the helm. I found some of his managerial decisions, particularly with regard to putting together lineups and making substitutions, to be highly questionable.

I think the Dominicans win this thing.

U.S. eliminated from WBC with 2-1 loss to Mexico
Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Roger Clemens was a loser in what might have been the final start of his outstanding career, and Mexico eliminated Team USA from the World Baseball Classic.

Oliver Perez and seven relievers combined to pitch a three-hitter Thursday night as Mexico beat the Rocket and the United States 2-1, giving Japan another shot at Korea in the WBC semifinals.

The outcome was a stunner, considering Team USA fielded a lineup loaded with All-Stars even without Derrek Lee and Johnny Damon, sidelined with sore left shoulders.

Korea had a 3-0 second-round record in Group One, with Team USA, Japan and Mexico all going 1-2. Japan earned the second semifinal berth from the group by allowing the fewest runs in games between the tied teams.

Japan, which has already lost twice to Korea in the Classic, faces its archrival in Saturday's opening semifinal game at Petco Park in San Diego, with the Dominican Republic meeting Cuba on Saturday night. The winners play Monday night for the championship.

Clemens, who has won 341 games and struck out 4,502 batters in his big-league career, has said he's leaning toward retirement after the Classic. He wasn't at his best against Mexico, allowing six hits and two runs in 4 1/3 innings with no walks and four strikeouts. He threw 73 pitches -- seven below the maximum for the second round.

Perez allowed only one hit in three scoreless innings, and the Mexican bullpen later retired 12 straight batters until Chipper Jones drew a one-out walk off Jorge De La Rosa in the ninth. Luis Ayala then walked Alex Rodriguez, but David Cortes needed only one pitch, getting Vernon Wells to ground into a game-ending double play.

ps. i hear we activated vladimir, he didnt play because an accident that his cousins had the other day, but i think if we make it to the finals hes gonna join the team, anyway i was on the road and passed by the accident when it happened, it was really fucked up, but vlads cousins where at fault because thats a really fucked up road and they drove by my minivan going like 200 KPH in a green jetta, all i saw was when i drove by the jetta was like fully into a wall and people trying to get to the car n shit, really fucked up since they where young guys, and i think one of them was signed to a mlb team, he just hadnt been put on a roster yet... just another reminder to not risk your life trying to show off ur need for speed, just buy the video game...

That might be the dumbest back-to-back posts I've ever seen. You call me a bandwagon American and then you say you are happy to see Cuba win and call those expressing their freedom of speech "evil little f*ckers". That is single-digit IQ territory.

World Baseball Classic, n.
The World Baseball Classic, sometimes abbreviated WBC, is an international baseball tournament, first held in March 2006.

Usage Note: The WBC is planned to take place again in 2009, and every four years thereafter. It is the first international baseball tournament for national teams to feature major-league players; the Summer Olympics have regularly featured college and minor-league players because the Games conflict with the major league season, and the World Cup of Baseball historically has not had major leaguers participate.
