SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have signed free agent forward James Thomas. Per team policy the terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 23-year-old Thomas played four years at the University of Texas where he set a Longhorn record for career rebounds with 1,077. In his collegiate career he averaged 8.6 points and 8.0 rebounds while shooting .507 (405-799) from the field. Thomas finished as one of only two players in school history to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds (along with LaSalle Thompson) and finished tied for first with teammate Brian Boddicker for the most games played with 134. He was named to the All-Big 12 Defensive Team as both a sophomore and junior.

During the 2003-04 campaign, Thomas earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors averaging 5.5 points and 5.8 rebounds in 18 games despite battling injuries throughout the season. He enjoyed his best year as a junior when he averaged 11.1 points and 11.0 rebounds in 24.4 minutes in 33 games. He ranked 10th in the nation in rebounding and earned All-Big 12 Second Team Honors. As a sophomore he was named to the All-Big 12 Third Team after averaging 10.7 points and 8.9 rebounds while shooting a career-best .545 (128-235) from the field.

The first 12 in the Spurs' rotation are pretty well set. Thomas is a practice/developmental guy who may end up in Europe unless an injury occurs.

I was never impressed by Thomas in college, but I guess we'll see how he does in camp.

Thomas = a taller Malik without a jumpshot and with a sorry FT %Hey, as long as he can't shoot from the field or the line, there's bound to be a place for him on this team.

So basically, he's exactly what Malik was when he played for Charlotte but taller.

Well, 6'8 his still undersized. I think we should make the effort to sign an actual backup centre though. A genuine 7 footer would be nice right now we have a bunch of PF Horry being the tallest but he's way to soft to play C. And despite how aggresive Rose can be he is still a liabilty playing against a decent C.

I've never seen Thomas play. Does he have Ben Wallace type hops, strength and intensity?

No, few do.
However, he is very tough and physical and he works hard on the boards. I'd give him that. I'd project him as sort of a Reggie Evans type of role...although he may have to spend some time in Europe first.

sometimes a jumpshot can be a liability as we've seen from rose
