SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have signed free agent forward James Thomas. Per team policy the terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The 23-year-old Thomas played four years at the University of Texas where he set a Longhorn record for career rebounds with 1,077. In his collegiate career he averaged 8.6 points and 8.0 rebounds while shooting .507 (405-799) from the field. Thomas finished as one of only two players in school history to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds (along with LaSalle Thompson) and finished tied for first with teammate Brian Boddicker for the most games played with 134. He was named to the All-Big 12 Defensive Team as both a sophomore and junior.
During the 2003-04 campaign, Thomas earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors averaging 5.5 points and 5.8 rebounds in 18 games despite battling injuries throughout the season. He enjoyed his best year as a junior when he averaged 11.1 points and 11.0 rebounds in 24.4 minutes in 33 games. He ranked 10th in the nation in rebounding and earned All-Big 12 Second Team Honors. As a sophomore he was named to the All-Big 12 Third Team after averaging 10.7 points and 8.9 rebounds while shooting a career-best .545 (128-235) from the field.
