Ok people, lets hear it, build your all-time spurs team taking into account chemisty, roles and style of play.

These must be the players that played on the Spurs, so you dont get Steve Smith the star, you get Steve Smith the spur.

Also mention who you would have as Coach/GM, i think I'd go with Pop/Buford :)

As a not so old school fan heres my shot at it.

C Robinson
PF Duncan
SF Manu
SG Gervin
PG Parker

Elliott
Silas
Avery
Rodman
Cummings
Anderson
Bowen

How did I do?

Actually, i've changed my mind. Manu will come off the bench and Elliott will start...

Special K, should have remembered him though, as well as Gilmore....

Given the fact that there's a lot of scoring firepower in the squad, I'd move Manu and Tony to the bench and start Bruce Bowen and Alvin. That gives the 1st team 3 all-NBA level scorers plus a defensive identity.

Starters:
C David Robinson
F Tim Duncan
F Bruce Bowen
G George Gervin
G Alvin Robertson

2nd team:
C Artis Gilmore
F Larry Kenon
F Sean Elliott
G Manu Ginobili
G Tony Parker

A healthy Duncan and Robinson would be the scariest duo ever.

And who's gonna guard Gervins man? ;)

And I would definetly put Johnny Moore as the backup PG. Even tho the guys an asshole. Terry Cummings as backup PF.

I can only assume that you guys are not starting James Silas because you never saw him play. Only two Spur guards have ever been first-team all league, and Silas is the other. No way any other guard except Gervin gets mentioned before him.

Starters:
C David Robinson
PF Tim Duncan
SF Shawn Elyut
PG James Silas
SG George Gervin

Bench
C Artis Gilmore
PF Larry Kenon
SF Mike Mitchell
PG Tony Parker
SG Manu Ginobili

Honorable Mention
Alvin Robertson, Avery Johnson, Bruce Bowen, Johnny Moore

and timvp, putting Gervin at SF is a complete wuss-out.

BTW...I honestly do think Bruce has now earned the all time starting SF slot for the Spurs. Yeah he's not an offensive juggernaut, in fact he just might be the worst offensive player to ever start at that position for an extended period, scratch that, he is the worst one...but he's still got something that makes that spot his own, a tone setter maybe?

Bruce is great, but he is also a product of having enough talent surrounding him that we can emphasize his strengths and mask his deficiencies.

No way Bruce would get off the bench for the Cotton Fitzsimmons Spurs.

Just paying respects to the team that brought us our first championship. As much as I loved Mario Elie, I didn't include him because like other great Spurs (Dominique, Moses Malone, Rodman) I don't think he played here long enough to make an All-Time Spurs team

Yeah, on an All-Star team lets start a point guard who averaged more than five assists only once in his career. And actually, if this was a team I'd be taking into the playoffs to try to win a championship, my team would look like:

Coach: Pop

C David Robinson
PF Tim Duncan
SF Bruce Bowen
SG Manu Ginobili
PG Avery Johnson

C A Bruise Brother on Steroids
PF Malik Rose
SF Sean Elliott
SG George Gervin
PG Tony Parker
U James Silas
U Mario Elie

For as great as Gervin was, Pop would have made him into Brent Barry because he played no D.

Yeah, on an All-Star team lets start a point guard who averaged more than five assists only once in his career. *shrug*, okay, put him at shooting guard. The fact remains that he was a better player than either one of your starting guards.

Better than 2005 playoff Manu?

ShoogarBear

Better than 2005 playoff Manu? Are we going to granulate down to a single season or a single playoff performance? If so, then we need to put Jaren Jackson on these lists.

But to answer your question, yes, Silas was that good.

Incidentally, discounting his assist totals don't work once you account for differences in eras. In 1976, Silas' 5.4 APG was fourth in the ABA.

So, when TP or Manu rank in the top 5 in assists or make first-team All League, we'll have an argument.

We need an all-time Spurs shit list, I think John Lucas would be the best pick for coach.

Jack Haley (AKA Rodman's bitch) would be the starting center.

I think we need to throw in some seasons for clarification. For example, it's easier to say Manu over Elliott when you compare '05 to '99, but much harder when you compare '05 to '96. Plus, I think it'll make the whole thing more fun (by that I mean it will give us more shit to argue about). My starters:

C: Robinson '95 (27.6, 10.8, 3.2 blocks, MVP, First Team, All-Star)
PF: Duncan '03 (23, 13, 2.9 blocks, MVP, Finals MVP, First Team, All-Star)
SF: Elliott '96 (20, 5, 41% 3s, All-Star)
SG: Gervin '80 (33, 5, Scoring Title, First Team, All-Star)
PG: Moore '85 (13, 10 assists, 2.8 steals)

That's some monstrous scoring, and amazing D at the 1, 4, and 5. We know Gervin and Moore play well together, and we know that Sean, Tim and David play well together. We also know that both DRob and Tim can defer to the teammate with the hot hand. My bench:

C: Artis Gilmore '83 (18, 12, 2.3 blocks, All-Star)
F/C: Horry '05 (pretend it's Game 7 of the NBA Finals, 5 seconds left, down by 2...what All-Time Spur do you want taking the shot for the win?)
F: Larry Kenon '78 (20, 9.6, All-Star)
F: Bowen '03 (what he did to Kobe in Game 2 of WCSF is the stuff of legend)
G: Ginobili '05 (All-Star, Finals MVP *ahem*)
G: Alvin Robertson '88 (19.6, 6, 7, All-Star)
G: Silas '76 (23.8, 5.4 assists, 1.8 steals, All-Star)
IR: Parker '06 (only IR because this team is guard heavy and we don't know if he can keep it up in the playoffs)

Coach: Pop

That bench is ridiculous. Defense all over the place, plenty of scoring and clutch shooting. Overall, the team is very deep at the 1, 2, and 3, not as much at 4 and 5, just like the Spurs of today. Maybe not enough muscle and size down low, but DRob in '95 owned Shaq, so that's good enough for me.

Who got left off:

Rodman: yeah, he could board, but he didn't defend when it mattered like he did as a Piston or Bull, and his presence would have screwed the chemistry of any team that played in "boring" San Antonio

Avery: no good if he's not the leader of the team (i.e. starter)

Terry Cummings: could score his first couple of years with the Spurs, didn't play D one single game of his entire 18 year career

Malik Rose: no way he's one of the top 12 Spurs ever...please

Elie, SJax, JJax: have to be on the bench, and none of their seasons with the Spurs top Silas or Ginobili
