I believe he was invited for tryouts. The final roster hasn't been set.

VEN - Diaz marks USA out as favourites

CARACAS (FIBA World Championship) - The United States announced the 23 players coach Mike Krzyzewski will draw from for the FIBA World Championship and they have left nothing to chance - at least that's the opinion of Venezuela star Victor David Diaz.

Six Olympians from the Athens Games in 2004 - Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade, Phoenix Suns duo Amare Stoudemire and Shawn Marion, Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom, Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony and Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James - are in the group as well as Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant.

For those wanting college players to return to the mix, Adam Morrison of Gonzaga and JJ Reddick of Duke are in.

But the player in the preliminary group Diaz likes most is Bruce Bowen, a 34-year-old defensive specialist of the NBA champions Spurs.
"For me, the most important player will be Bruce Bowen, from San Antonio," Diaz told PA Sport.

If the US coach selects him, Bowen will be a surprise (for some), but for me he will be the most important. He is world class."

Bowen often draws the toughest defensive assignment when San Antonio are in action and with Krzyzewski renowned for his emphasis on defense, the Spur does indeed look to be a natural fit for the USA.

Venezuela will not have to face the Americans in the preliminary round but Diaz says the teams that are in Group D have plenty to worry about....

Bruce is the only perimeter "defensive specialist" on the invitee list, correct? He's there.

Battier is a Coach K guy, is younger, and is probably a better offensive player. I hope Bruce makes the roster, but I'd think the smarter money would be on Battier.

Don't underestimate the power of the Duke nepotism. Allen Iverson wasn't invited because they were going to give his spot to JJ Reddick anyway.
