G.P. : En un mot: non !

I'm sure this is an interview translated into French, but if Pop really does speak French this well, then my little crush on him just got a whole lot bigger. :)

My French is a little rusty, but the first question the reporter asks goes something like this:

Comparing this team with last season's, where are you right now?

GP: I would say that we're not very far off the level we were at last season, but that we're not all the way there yet. We have to continue to improve on the rebound, it's an area where we still need to make progress. We also have to handle the ball better so that we don't turn it over as much [I think that's what it says], and we have to find a way for Tim and Manu to get back to full strength. If we do that, we're ready to go.

I can try translating the rest if anyone's interested.

OK, here's the rest (I'm bored :)):

Rep: How did you personally react last year when you found out that Tony Parker and Eva Longoria were dating, and do you think his desire to be a rapper could become a distraction?

GP: Well, first of all, I have to say that I have absolutely no influence at all on my players when it comes to their girlfriends (laughs). It so happens that he thinks Eva Longoria is a terrific woman and they like to spend time together, that's true. What's important to me is that Tony accomplishes what is expected of him as a core member of our team, and as far as that goes, I've never had a complaint about him. He's a 23-year-old guy who's the most [mur?--this must be slang. Any French Spurstalkers out there who can help] whom I know or have ever met. He can do several things at the same time, and he has done nothing up until now that has adversely affected his job. He's been great at all levels.

Rep: One might have feared a let-down after the All-Star Game, but he's come back better than ever.

GP: Tony's a competitor. He's going to be a great player some day. He has improved his game each year that he's been here, but it's true that this year he's made a leap that's really remarkable. To be selected for the All-Star Game, that was his goal, and he achieved it. As I've said, he wants to improve and he works at it. Every day, after training, whether we have a game or not, he works on different aspects of his game and I'm very impressed by his professionalism.

Rep: Where is he specifically in his training with Chip Engelland?

GP: I believe it's already had an effect on his confidence, without a doubt. He goes to the freethrow line with confidence. His mid-range shot has improved significantly and he's going to continue to work on that next season and also begin to work on his three-point shot.

Rep: Can you keep him in reserve so that he can be fresh for the playoffs? [I think that's what this says]

G.P. : In a word, no!

In spite of the defeat of his team by the L.A. Clippers Tuesday in Los Angeles, Gregg Popovich thinks his team is not "not very far from last year's level". The coach of the San Antonio Spurs underlines the "remarkable leap forward" made this year by Tony Parker.

GREGG POPOVICH, compared to last season at the same time, where is the team at?

G.P.: I would say that we are not very far from our level of last season but that we are not completely there yet. We need to keep improving our rebounding, that's an area where we need to make progress. We also need to take better care of the ball with less turnovers, and then that we find a way for Timmy (Tim Duncan) and Manu (Emanuel Ginobili) to get their complete games back. From there, we will be in good shape.

How did you react personally when you learned last year that Tony Parker and Eva Longoria were a couple , and do you think his aspirations as a rapper could become a distraction?

G.P.: Eh well first of all, I make a point of saying that I do'nt have any influence on the choices of my players with regard to their girlfriends ( laugh). That's not my business, obviously. As it happens, Eva Longoria is a great girl and they're spending time together, it's true. He hasn't come through on my request for some candid shots of her in her scanties yet, but that's not important. What's important to me is that Tony does what he has to do for the heart of our team, and about that side of things, I was never worried. He's the most mature 23 year old guy that I know or even that I could know. He can take handle several things at the same time, he hasn't done anything so far that's affected his job. He's been marvellous on every level.

One could have feared a minor step back after his All-Star Game appearance, but actually, he's gotten even better...

G.P.: "Tony's a competitor. He wants to become a great player. He's improved every year that he's been here but it's true that, this year, he made a completely remarkable jump ahead. To be selected for the All-Star Game was a goal of his, and it happened. Like I said, he wants to improve and he works on it. Every day, after practice, whether we have a match or not, he works on different aspects of his game, and I am very impressed by his professionalism.

Where is he with his work specifically with Chip Engelland, the shooting coach?

G.P.: I believe that that has already an effect on his confidence, without any doubt. He goes to the free-throw line with confidence. His mid-range shot has improved significantly, and he'll keep at it next season and will also start working on his 3-point shooting.

Maybe he's keeping that in reserve for the play-offs?

G.P.: In a word: no!

(My best translation, except for one thing I made up).
(Edit- quick draw there, Austin. I think yours flows a little better.)

Hey, looks aren't everything, ya know? There are some women out there who happen to be attracted to smart men with a knack for thinking ahead of the curve.

Yeah, yeah, we see where you took creative license! :spin But your translation is better than mine.

Pretty good work Austin, despite what you claim is 'rusty' french :)

"Mur" (with an accent circonflexe -the 'hat' symbol) literally means ripe, but in the above context, it means "mature". Without the accent, it means wall.

"il se trouve" is an expression that was aptly translated by bdubya to "As it happens" or by yourself as "It so happens". One thing to remember is that 'Il' is part of the expression and does not stand for "he" (tony) in this specific case.

Great job to both of you... translation is a tricky business that forces you to think about the grammatical structure of both languages - it's never easy as it looks.

good interview.

Him thinking this team isn't far behind last year's, is funny.
