Brees agrees to six-year deal with Saints

Moments after the Dolphins got Daunte Culpepper in a trade with the Vikings, free agent quarterback Drew Brees agreed to a six-year deal with the New Orleans Saints.

Financial terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed.

Saints sources also said that since they are no longer in need of a quarterback, the team will now try to trade the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft.

The Saints pursued Brees as a replacement for Aaron Brooks.

"You've got a young ascending player who's proven at this level he can win," Saints coach Sean Payton said of Brees before the deal was completed.

Brees spent the last five seasons with the San Diego Chargers but reached a stalemate with them on a new contract.

Brees had said the devastation of Hurricane Katrina wouldn't dissuade him from joining the Saints. He said he helped build winning teams at Purdue and San Diego, and the challenge of doing the same with the Saints appealed to him.

"I think being a part of that would be a great opportunity," he said.

Brees tore the labrum and damaged the rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder in the final game last season and underwent surgery Jan. 5. He said Sunday that he faces another four or five months of recovery and doesn't anticipate any long-term effects.

The Saints will take the top defensive player at #2 and either Leinart/Vince will fall down the draft. If Leinart goes to the Titans then he'll meet up with Norm Chow.....

this throws the draft into whack.

Leinart may end up in Tennessee w/ Norm Chow now.

Not sure. They were discussing this on ESPN yesterday that if Brees went to the Saints it could shake up the draft. Also that the Saints would draft Mario Williams at #2 but they don't really know that they would.

Heres my bold prediction:

Saints trade down to Arizona. They swap first rounders, and obviously Arizona would have to give other later round picks for compensation.

At #2 the Cardinals would select D'Brickashaw Ferguson (OT). They need a beefed up O line for Kurt Warners' sake aswell as for newly acquired Edgerin James.

At #10 the Saints will then take Vernon Davis (TE). He will be Bree's new version of Antonio Gates.

Brees at QB

Joe horn & Donte' Stallworth at the wideout

Deuce McAllister & Antowain Smith in the backfield

Vernon Davis at the Tight End

I would love to see this happen for both teams.

we'll see.....Just 46 days till Draft Day!!!

Dallas has got to trade into the 2 spot and draft a QB for the next 10 years.

I agree but what do you give up?

They may actually trade down, and not up......

18. Dallas Cowboys – Chad Jackson, WR, Florida. There are rumbles that the Cowboys may be looking to trade back to the end of the first round and select N.C. State's Manny Lawson, who will be moved to outside linebacker. If Dallas keeps this pick, the speedy Jackson provides an eventual replacement for the aging duo of Terry Glenn and Keyshawn Johnson. Clemson's Charlie Whitehurst is the quarterback the Cowboys are looking at in the middle rounds.

How does the Cowboys recent signing of an OLB affect the speculation about Lawson?

Ayodele can play ILB in the 3-4, so that isn't a concern. Lawson is pretty much the same player as Ware though, and you don't really want pass rushing LBs on both edges. You need a run-stopper on one of them.

Alot of what the Saints are able to do will depend on if Cutler keeps moving up and Leinart/Young keep falling. If the 3 have equal grades, then the value of moving up #2 is reduced. If Cutler stays a notch back, the Saints have big time ammo. The following scenario could take place:

Saints trade #2 to Titans for #3 and this years 2nd rounder. Titans move up to make sure the Jets don't jump up and take the guy they want.

Saints trade #3 to Jets for #4 and this years 2nd and 4th rounders. Jets have to move up to prevent Raiders from jumping ahead of them and taking their QB.

That is a very plausable scenario and it would net the Saints the same guy they would have drafted anyway at #2, and 3 consecutive picks in round 2 and an early day 2 pick.

I'm curious but, how much does Aaron Brookes make because I wouldn't mind him backing up bledsoe as a change of pace to throw off defenses. Also any new word on Lavar Arrington or Willy Mcghinist signing w/ Dallas?

McGinnest has signed with Cleveland. Hopefully we won't even look in Aaron Brooks' direction.
