To play devil's advocate, if the Spurs hadn't owned the offensive glass in the game played in SA last week, they would have been in big trouble. It was their second, third, and fourth looks on numerous possessions that allowed them to score points and win that game. If you don't think the Suns rebounding would improve with at least Grant and Thomas on the floor, I think you're wrong.

The problem with the analysis, however, is that if you have Grant and Thomas on the floor -- particularly if you have them on the floor together -- you're taking away two of the difficult-to-guard, smaller players (say James Jones, Boris Diaw, and Barbosa) from that lineup and putting them into situations where they don't create the same mismatches on the offensive end. The Spurs have a pretty decent chance to defend Nash, Bell, Marion, K. Thomas and Grant. The Spurs struggle defensively when asked to defend Nash, Jones, Bell, Marion, and Diaw because the Spurs' bigs don't have anything resembling a favorable matchup. Unless this Suns' fan is thinking that they can play 7 guys or that K. Thomas and Grant can individually handle both Mohammed and Duncan (i.e., Thomas on the floor, then Grant), it would seem the Suns have a bit of a problem in trying to create offensive mismatches and defending the glass at the same time.

It's a much different equation with Amare around, of course, but for now, I think part of his point is valid, but his analysis misses a step.

i agree for the most part, especially since if k thomas or grant is in the game that would allow for bowen to spend more time on marion, and make the matchups a bit more favorable for us. the suns personnel allows them to create very favorable matchups for them, and with some larger, less quick people like grant and thomas in there it also gives duncan a break from having to guard diaw as much as he did in that game. we also would have been in trouble if tony hadn't come up big late in the game with some clutch outside shooting :smokin

Wow, you've made an entire thread to criticize a single man's opinion...fantastic. There isn't an intelligent Suns fan alive who doesn't think that the Suns lost last year because the Spurs were simply better. And most of the people I talk to believe the Suns can only win this year if Amare comes back like a bat out of hell, which is highly unlikely.

I don't think Grant and Thomas should ever be on the court at the same time. FromWayDowntown is right that it would completely screw up the Suns' offense. Ideally for the Suns, Grant would only fill in when KT is on the bench. And even with KT not playing, a frontcourt of Diaw, Marion, and Amare would be the most lethal in the league offensively; the rebounding in that scenario might also improve a bit since Amare rebounds better than James Jones and Tim Thomas.

The Suns' chances of a championship this year are even slimmer than last year with Amare just now getting ready to return. Point is, we'd need KT and Amare both to return. Brian Grant is just a fill-in and really not that important. Barring any major injuries or ridiculous trades, the Suns could very well win it next year, but it doesn't look like this current unhealthy squad can do it.

While your point about intelligent Suns fans may be correct, unfortunately I think we've been learning of late that "intelligent" ones are rather a small subset of Suns fans as a whole.

But his opinion is WAAAAY off base. It's one thing to expect that KT and Amare will push the Suns over the edge. It is another to expect that KT and Grant will do the same.

I'd expect a hard-fought - but ultimately futile - series for the Suns if they only have KT and BG. But right now it looks like it will be KT, BG AND AMARE.

If Amare's anywhere near 100%, the Spurs had better watch out.
