View Full Version : WTF Is Pop Doing? Can Anyone Explain It To Me?

Our offense is total playground the last five minutes of this game, and we're just twiddling our thumbs defensively watching Carmelo light up Finley.
Where's Bowen?
If you're not going to try to win, take out Duncan, Manu, and Tony and let them rest.
What a fucking joke.

Wake the fuck up che. Manu touched the ball TWICE and came up with 5 points. The rest of the team sucked hind tit on offense, from Tony throwing blind turnovers to weak ass Tim Duncan jumpers.
Are you even watching the game?
How do we get something going by sitting Bowen on the bench and watching Carmelo score 10 straight on Finley?
Wake the fuck up.

spurs showed heart in the 3rd quarter for sure. the 4th is where the went back to their delightful mental collapse ways. i dont care if its a b2b or how thin the air is, the playoffs are right around the corner and this team is a long ways away from playoff form. the next 4 are on the road i believe and it aint gonna be pretty

pop has the worst substituing patterns in nba history sometimes it seems
This is probably like thread number 5 on this, but who cares.
It made me mad that Manu didn't get the ball more. Why? He had it going, but the players weren't playing very smart. Beno with a quick three, Parker driving in the paint where they had the paint packed in on purpose because of Tony and Tim Duncan trying to power people down with a bad foot, that isn't very smart. Manu had something going but his rythm was broken by some sloppy ass plays. Manu always plays great against the Nuggets, too bad he didn't go off and shutted everybody up. Another thing Bowen had 4 fouls and he sat half of the 4th quarter?? :wtf Finley was getting owned by Carmela.
I especially wanted the Spurs to win because the Nuggets players were acting like morons. Sometimes it's so amazing how stupid people can be. Ruben Patterson and Marcus Camby swipe at Timmy's arm and head and make contact, they then get called for the foul both of them give a look of disbelief on their faces towards the ref. I'm like shut the fuck up and know your place that was a fucking foul to the tenth power. There are many more examples of the same situation with different players in tonight's game.

03-23-2006, 01:26 AM
b2b back pattern already was established. Tonights game is no surprise.
Pop is a cement head playing Tim GNob and Parker the most minutes of all while basically sitting Rash, Barry, Fabbs vs the headhunting and IMO often cheapshot Nuggets. When Parker got mauled by Patterson i thought perhaps it was a season ending injury. Also when Dunkan got hit in the eye again, also Nazr.
Yeah tonight really proved a lot, Pop.

There was a play where Bowen touches Buckner to get through a screen. He straight up falls down even the replay shows it he isn't pushed back or anything he just falls down like he was tripped. I started to laugh. OKAY BUDDY THAT WAS A FLOP.

I think Pop wanted Finley out there for a run at against a potential team in the playoffs to get him some experience. That's why Bowen was out.

Given that Finley was not creating his own shot and spotting up late, Bowen could have done that as well and made some stops on MELO!

Right, because we all know that we would have our perimeter stopper sitting on the fucking pine down the stretch of a playoff game with four fouls :rolleyes
Look, Pop had one of those moments tonight when he bends over and sticks his head up his ass to find his substitution patterns and offensive play calls.

I never said this was a good thing. It was just odd why Bowen with 4 fouls sat out and pissed me off too, but it could have been one of the possbilities. I mean we did get Finley for this right? To light it up during the Playoffs and it looked to me that Pop was giving him a test run, but he got owned by Carmela.
Aggie Hoopsfan

Again, in the playoffs, unless we're down 20 we will never have Finley in instead of Bowen down the stretch.
We're up 2 and we let Carmelo smoke Finley. Like I said, it's not exactly earthshattering that Mikey can't guard Anthony, so why lose a game just to confirm that?
If Pop didn't give a fuck about this game he should have sat Tony, Manu, and Tim the whole time.
It's really sad that after coming back from 18 down we just piss that all away because Pop gets stupid for six minutes.

And I agreed with you in my previous post, but if we're on the offensive end of a playoff game down the stretch I'm thinking Finley would be more of a scoring option than Bowen and then have him sub Bowen in during the defensive end, but right now MY down the stretch playoff line up would be:
Duncan
Horry
Bowen
Manu
Parker
I don't know why Finley was subbed in for Bowen so much, but I think I gave one of the reasons why he was there. Even if it cost us the game I think Pop even stated it that it's all about the Playoffs right now and 1 or 2 games are expendable.

Should Ginobili have gotten the ball more down the stretch? yeah.
IMo what really killed them was WAYYY too many jumpers taken.
No agressiveness to the basket what so ever.
Bowen not playing the last few minutes was retarded yes, Finley was getting grilled by Anthony more than a terrorist at Club Git-Mo.
Beno's D on Howard Eisley and Miller was horrible.
IMO, Barry should've gotten the minutes at the point, his height would've negated Miller, and wouldn't have let him get on that roll in the beginning of the 4th.
The back breaker IMO was his three that made it from 3 to 6.
T Park

Well, it is predictable, but Aggie has valid gripes, Bowen shouldve come back in after a couple mins, and the lack of iso's or pick and rolls with Ginobili and Duncan, or Horry was stupid.
Of course, if Horry would've had even a DECENT night shooting the ball, we would've had a different story as well.
Way way way way too many jumpers.
This team lately has fallen in love with it, and it KILLED them in the 2nd quarter.
Beno, Barry, Horry, Duncan, Ginobili, PARKER, ALL OF THEM, shot way way way too many jumpers in that and the 4th.

Rest them? What the fuck? As soon as it was obvious we didn't have a chance to come back, Pop pulled Tim.
I agree with you on Bowen, though. He should have been in there on Mello. It was ridiculous watching Carmelo go off, and the commentators talkinga bout "the spurs need points, thats why bowens on the bench". What the fuck? Bowen has always been in there in the clutch for us, whether we needed points or not. In fact, more often than not he's pulled when we're AHEAD so he doesn't have to shoot free throws, not when we're fucking behind.

All of you who think we would've won the game if Bowen saw more of the 4th Q, please re-watch the game. Melo was flaming Bruce. Bruce was not the answer and what probably Pop was looking for was more O.
I cannot believe our best option on offense is Timmy from the top of the key?
Pop took out Bruce because of foul trouble and kept him out to improve the offensive chances. Excuse me, but without Bruce's defense, there was no need for offense. We were not going to out shoot them, we needed Bruce in the game on Melo and shutting him down.
I know they were tired, but they looked pretty damn good in the 3rd to look that damn bad in the 4th.
How any more back to backs?
Was the last game in Denver the 2nd of a back to back?
Seems like we get some pretty crappy scenarios on these back to backs.
Like when we were in PHuX and the Lakers were waiting in SA for us to get there the next night. They got to rest in our town.
We get stuck flying into Denver in the middle of the night to play these thugs the next night.
Oh well, we will prevail and become 4 time NBA champs.

There was no reason for Parker to be out there in the fourth. Miller typically has a good game against Parker because of the size mismatch but Parker has been able to make the Nugget pay on the other end of the floor, but last night in crunch time he couldn't finish at the hoop, he made a couple of bonehead passes that turned into fast break points going the other way, and his jumper wasn't falling. That big backcourt was a big problem for the Spurs. I would have liked to have seen Manu or Barry running the point and kept Bowen out there. Carmelo was having a hell of a night, but at least with Bowen out there he had to work for the points. Finley and Barry were just getting embarrassed when they tried to cover him.
And WTF was going on with Nazr? He played like absolute shit during that first quarter and yet Pop let him play every single second of it. I understand that Rasho probably wouldn't have done much better, but I don't see how he could possibly have done any worse.
It's simultaneously frustrating and uplifting to think that despite all that the Spurs were still in the thick of it until the last minute or two.

This is actually one of the more tame threads I've seen when it comes to bashing Pop's coaching. For the most part it's been clear that the criticism has been strictly of last night. There hasn't been any, "He always does this stupid shit" or "Pop's overated, we should have gone after Phil Jackson" or cries to rally a lynch mob.
He's easily one of the top five coaches in the league, he just didn't act like it last night. Who knows? Maybe losing this game was part of CIA Pop's master plan.

Bowen guard Melo when ever they were both on the floor. Melo got off to a hot start and hit his first three shots, all jumpers, with Bowen on him. Bowen was busting his ass but Anthony was just having a good night and had 16 at the half. Bowen did manage to slow him down for a while in the third while the Spurs climbed back into it. All in all, Carmelo did well against Bowen, but he made Barry and Finley look silly. The Nuggets clearly made it a priority to get the ball in Anthony's hands whenever Bowen was on the bench.

tim USED to be one of those guys who would keep his mouth shut to a point that if he DID complain then you knew it had to be serious. no he has to be one of the 3 biggest babies in the league. he needs to stop forcing bad shots in foolish attempts to draw non existent fouls and just play the damn game. i love tim but the constant bitching to the refs has got to stop

Tim is a 2-time MVP and 3-time Finals MVP... he should be getting the damn calls.

how is that suppose to tell me if you cheer when someone gets hurt?
if we go based on internet posts i can find MANY that show a spurs fan hoping or praising something bad happening to another player.

internet posts are one thing, but you don't hear cheers in the sbc/at&t center when another team's player goes down, period.

to be fair, spurs fans dont always act with class either.
Yeah, booing Ginobili is pretty stupid, but booing Derek Fisher is equally stupid by Spurs fans. The guy hit a shot on us, that's it. Sure, it was a soul-crushing, championship hopes destroying shot, but what do you want him to do, miss it on purpose so he doesn't hurt our feelings?

The game I saw - fourth quarter - Buckner had like three straight shots go down. Tims horrible free throws bricking off the left side- and lack of rebounding.
I looked up at the hustle stats and at half the Nuggets owned the Spurs 31 to 13.
I was embarrassed. I got happy in the third and first part of fourth when it was neck and neck.
The fans are out for blood - I admire their passion - I get pretty pumped when a good play happens, but never would cheer or laugh when someone gets hurt. When Parker - Tim and Nazr got hurt they were happy and standing up cheering.
I had a feeling the SPurs were going to have a hard time with Camby and Melo - back to back - high elevation - blah blah blah.
If the Spurs want another ring - they have got to get their heads out!
I am just as die hard a fan as anyone ever - (My girlfriend thanks I am nuts for getting LP to watch them every game possible that ABC doesn't fuck up and hold the rights to.)

some of u guys are a joke.....Nuggets got OWNED by the refs, TD gets any call he wants.......Manu flops and the refs fall for it........
just coz u lost, u blame the refs and you use the same excuses that u get annoyed at other teams fans for doing, hypocrites

TD gets any call he wants???
I guess when you poke him in the eye it doesn't.....he didn't get the call.
We lost because the lack of energy....and got outrebounded badly.....pretty simple to see IMO.

I was fuckin pissed last night.'
Manu was on last night, and he barely got the ball down the stretch. I think he hit one 3 in the beginning of the 4th quarter, then went to the bench, came back with about 5 minutes to go and barely touched the ball.
The Spurs couldn't stop Melo. Bowen comitted some stupid fouls, which made us put Finley on Melo...
Everytime they had a chance to take the lead, or tie the game up again, they took some stupid ass shots, it seemed like they were waiting and waiting for the end of the game to make their move or something... no killer instinct at all. We waited long enough, and then Denver hit some threes, Melo pimped us, and Camby raped us down the stretch.
Shitty basketball.

Oh yeah, we need a fucking big man with balls.
The Nuggets grabbed so many offensive boards, and we wouldn't even try to get offensive boards, with the exception of a couple of steals after they pulled one down. I remember so many possessions where none of our big guys would be near the paint when we put up a shot.

Fuck.
I don't know why, but that loss really pissed me off.
We had so many chances during the 4th quarter to take the game into our hands when Melo was on the bench. Even without Melo, we were still getting scored on almost every possession, at least it seemed that way. Andre Miller had like 6 in a row at one point, or something like that.
One thing did make me laugh though, when Pop sent out the All-White team:
Beno
Manu
Brent
Oberto
Rasho
That was pretty funny at first, but what was pathetic was that Pop had that line up in for a good amount of time. Oberto doesn't have experience in this league, and gave up some easy shit. Beno and Barry got pimped by Miller...it was just terrible.
Pop did a good job on telling his team to start fuckin playing at halftime, and they did, but then it just sucked after that.

Yeah he was pissin me off.
Stupid shit that a professional should be able to do.
When you are wide open with no one bothering you, and a pass from Tony Parker hits BOTH of your hands and you still can't catch it, then you need help. That is just pathetic.
I mean, how easy is it to catch a basketball. I would have fun watching Nazr run routes and tryin to catch footballs.

All of you who think we would've won the game if Bowen saw more of the 4th Q, please re-watch the game. Melo was flaming Bruce.
Who guarded Melo most the game? When Finley came in the 4th Melo was already 11-20 shooting
For the two of you who posted the above comments...
Carmelo was 7-10 at the half, Bowen shut him down in the third and first part of the fourth.
After Pop took him out Carmelo scored 12 of the next 14 for Denver.
Yeah, that was a brilliant fucking coaching move.

You just answered your own question. For the soul-crushing, championship hopes destroying shot, he gets booed.
Fucking deal with it. Dude cost us a championship. That's a little bit different from seeing someone crumple on the floor and getting excited about it.

The Spurs can't get down early to a good team on the road. Period. Factor in altitude and the second leg of a back to back and the Spurs lost that game in the first five minutes. Again.
The Nuggets and their fans have absolutely no class. It's amazing. This is the same mentality of the crowd that threw coins at the Spurs ten years ago. We should start calling them Philthydelphia west.
