View Full Version : Does cursing bother you?

There was some study done recently on the prevelance of cursing in public, and they were talking about it this morning.

So. Does cursing in public bother you? Why or why not?

Do you curse in public?

What is your favorite curse word?

(can you tell that I'm a little bored at work today? :oops )

Depends on the situation, sometimes it's appropriate and sometimes it's not.

My favorite is fuck...

I curse like a mofo. I've been trying to cut back, though. And I don't have a problem not doing it where I'm not supposed to. :fro

The only time it bothers me is if I hear one of my children do it. They know all about the 1 gallon SoftSoap refill bottle underneath the kitchen sink.

Fuck or motherfucker is/are definitely my favorite(s).

Yes, I do curse in public, but only when necessary. :angel

It doesn't bother me in the least. The "F" word doesn't even bother me. The only time it does is when I'm with my Mom, and the only reason it does then is because I know she's offended by it.

I have never really understood what the big deal is about certain words being forbidden, anyway. What difference does it make if you say shit or crap? It's the same thing. Almost every curse word is about some bodily function/body part anyway. Everybody knows we do and have those things. So, what makes it dirty to talk about it?

Depends on the situation, sometimes it's appropriate and sometimes it's not.

That's very true, too, though.

I guess my favorite (the one I always seem to say, no matter what), is "Shit!"

Hell no! I say whatever the fuck I want and if that pisses people off, those little bitches can kiss my hairy ass.

Seriously, they are just words. I think that cursing is a way overrated offensive activity. I'm much more offended by PDA, people who cut me off, talk on cellphones, play music too loudly, drag race on my street, don't pay attention to their kids, talk during movies and mass, and show a general disregard for others than the "foul" words that can come out of someone's mouth. Intent is much more offensive than the word.

Do you curse in public?

This is a public forum, right? I don't watch my mouth. Context is the key. You can't be cursing someone in public, but you can use curse words, IMO. Yelling across the parking lot at someone in a heated argument is different than just normal conversation. But generally, because I don't like old ladies lecturing me, I keep my voice low when I curse in public.

What is your favorite curse word?

Definitely "fuck."

I curse in public, but I try to be respectful and keep it quiet or not do it when kids are around. I also try not to curse in front of my mother, who despises it.

I'm not bothered if people curse, but I do think there are places to avoid it (church, for instance, or at the park surrounded by kids).

I'm a 'fuck' fan, really, it's such a wonderfully all-purpose curse word.

What bothers me is watching a movie that edits out "offensive" language. It totally takes me out of the movie, and I start acting like I have tourette's because I have to say the word that was edited by a V.O. or simply muted.

I don't curse in public out of respect to people around me who don't want to hear it... Of course, I don't really talk loud in public for that same reason. Sometimes I'm annoyed by loud people cursing around me, but it's really the volume more than the content that annoys me.

With a group of some friends, I curse a lot... But I have other friends that I know do not curse so I try not to curse around them. It's not like it's that necessary a part of my vocabulary.

I have no respect at all for people who curse loudly with children present. I don't care if you think the parents should expose their children to the "real world," that's not your call to make.

My favorite is cocksucker.

Daddy: "Damnit, why'd I say that?"

Chopper Jr: "Damnit, Y. I. A. cat."

What is your favorite curse word?

Who are you now, James Lipton? :lol

English curse words are fun, but tame compared to other languages. I learned some Cantonese curse words in college. When they want to curse you, the Chinese do it right. They curse not just you, but your ancestors and descendants:

(approximate phonetic spellings)

Doo-lee-ah-MAH! == "Fuck you"

Doo-LEE-zah-pah-DOY-zhu-CHUNG ~ "Fuck you and the 17 generations behind you"

Kom-mo-lo-CHUT = "suck my dick"

Seriuosly, cursing is almost common languge these days and it's very unfortunate in that as most posters stated, there's a place and time, this isn't so especially with the younger kids. Regular TV contains some words that normally would't have been heard even 10 yrs ago. What's this world coming to!!!!

I had a wierd setup that was funny.

The cube to my right was a drill sgt from Lackland. Then me and then Wiley Paige.

He was a GS 12 I think, former marine, bad ass dude, anyway. He would answer the phone like this "What the fuck" real loud. Didn't matter if it was base commander or whoever. Everyone knew him. This drill sgt however lol. He was cut and clean and would cringe everytime that phone rang.

Wiley died in the late 90's I forget what year. He died pulling a slot (stroke) on a casino at Lake Charles.. hell of a way to go.

Cursing in context.

In a formal setting, obviously, you use manners and, in general, carry yourself as if you have an etiquettely-enhanced pole residing in your rectum. Same goes for any formal writing, or anything that could, by accident, be read by children or grandparents or your boss.

That being said, in any other setting I use cursing as liberally and inappropriately as possible. It's funny, and it gets your point across in a forceful and brief manner.

For example, instead of saying "I disagree with your opinion of me, and perhaps you should check your facts before you question my sexual orientation," you could simply retort with "Fuck you very much, you barbaric cunt."

Cursing doesn't make me think less of anyone, so long as it is used in a creative manner. "Go fuck yourself," while it may be appropriate, is not nearly as original and creative as "I hope you choke on a dick, you whore-child ratbastard. I'd rather fall into a pile of steaming dog shit than hear another word come out of your fuckhole."

You don't have to curse to be funny. But then again, few things do the job like a well-placed "Fuck you, cum dumpster!"

Good thread.

Cursing doesn't bother me unless every other word coming out of someone's mouth is a curse word. I curse like a sailor but not at work. And when I do curse, my co-workers look at me like, you curse...:lol

Now, most people I hang out with don't really cuss. The guys at work do but they don't around me because "I'm a lady" but if they are really pissed off then they'll slip, I really don't care if they do.

Crap? No way.

I won't use "goddamn" or "fuck" infront of people I don't know, or know are sensitive. I do have some morals. But other than that, I like to say shit just to get a reaction out of people, and if I know there's a line I can cross be it with vocabulary or a joke, I cross it as soon as I find it. People are funny when you put them in an awkward situation.

I'm a big fan of "fucktacular" and "fucktard," personally.

Heh, smegma. When i was younger, and Red Dwarf (The British Comedy) was on all the time at our place, Smeg was my word of choice.

I absolutely HATE it when people swear in front of my kids, (or smoke for that matter) as they are at the stage where they pick up words very quickly, and i'm worried they will learn them. My mother in law is especially bad at this.

I don't have a problem with swearing at all otherwise, but like people have said there is a time and a place... i definitly don't swear in front of my parents, and never have - it just isn't done. But among friends, i'm some what of a gutter mouth - or at least used to be before kids!

'Fuck', 'Shit', 'Whore', 'Slut', 'Bitch' and 'Wanker' are on my heavy rotation play list.

But a question - is 'crap' a swear word? My wife and I were having an argument over this before - i think it is, she doesnt. (In context, saying it infront of children, parents, etc).

Regarding cussing, I am bipolar through and through. In certain situations, not only do I avoid cussing, I am offended by those that do; and then again, I was once a sailor.

I guess what I really don't like are individuals that lack refinement and awareness to know the situation and comport themselves with common decency.

Oh. I didn't really consider that a curse per se, more of an insult. I thought you were talking about 'crap,' but I really hoped you weren't. Thanks for clearing that up.

And yeah, c-hunt is a bit rude.... Not like I don't use it, but it is a bit derrogatory.

Also, I have a fun habit of calling everyone a bitch. Both as an insult, as a machoism, and out of respect. It's a generic term for me. Some people don't care, but others (namely, feminazis), have gotten really pissed. Where do y'all stand on that?

Sometimes the edit of the cuss word is funnier than the word itself. Case in point, the Adam Sandler song P.O.S. Car. The edited for radio version has car honks and highway sounds in place of the curse words. It's freaking hilarious. I went out and bought the cd because it was so funny. The cd version is completely unedited and is not funny at all.

Why do people think that poetry must rhyme?

Because they are too stupid to write real poetry, and therefore rely on rhymes to give them some facade of poetic structure. Then again, real poetry is just a fancified outlet for those idiots too gramatically-challenged to write in prose.

That is a terrible. Poetry is a wonderful outlet for many people, I just feel that too many of them feel that it must rhyme. Poetry is far more difficult to write than prose. Any dickhead can write prose, good poetry takes talent.
