Some of you guys prolly know me and know that im a pistons fan. I dont post here too much, but i post from time to time. Im here to ask you guys why do you think the spurs will win it this year? Looking at the pistons and spurs from an outside view, everything points to the pistons winning it. Now no trash talking, just say why u think the spurs will win it. Remember the pistons are up 2-0 in the season series and won both games pretty easily.
As for me i think the pistons will win it because we beat u guys twice, we got an offensive minded coach, we can turn the defense on any time we want to, and the way the pistons have been playing all year.

Tim Duncan #1 reason
he's been hobbling all season with the injury but by the looks of the past games he's been getting better as the post season nears

so are you implying that it will spurs vs nets in the finals?

03-31-2006, 05:58 PM
Because in the playoffs, it's a different season, and games are won possession by possession.
If you wish to look solely at the regular season, then turnabout is fair play...the Pistons also lost twice during the regular season to the Nets. The Nets are on a roll at the right time. What makes Pistons fans think they can get past the Nets?

this is not an accurate statement. says who? I would say about 50% of analysts pick Pistons and the other half the Spurs.(Stein, Dupre, Barkley, etc)
Now no trash talking, just say why u think the spurs will win it. Remember the pistons are up 2-0 in the season series and won both games pretty easily.
I admit we got beat both REGSEASON games. But as of today we are playing immensely superior ball as back then when we played you.
we can turn the defense on any time we want to,
I hope the Piston players think this way too, if so you're doomed.

My honest answer is that I don't know that we will win it. Last year, I was sure we would. All I can tell you is that we're capable of winning it, for a couple of reasons.
1. I've taken a stance all year about this, and now I'm changing my mind. After seeing how much Dal and Phx have struggled lately, and combining that with the recent resurgence of the Heat, Nets, and Cavs, I'm prepared to say the playoffs will be more difficult for the Pistons than the Spurs.
I think Phx and Dal are soft and we'll run throught them relatively unscathed, and they won't be phsyical series. Unlike last year when we had the thuggery of Den and Sea to deal with, this year, it's quite possible for us to get through the playoffs (LA, Dal, Phx) with nary a scratch or flagrant foul. So I think we'll be the fresher team. Plus our starters play way less minutes.
2. Our coach is way more playoff experienced than your coach. It's not even close. Pop won't be intimidated at all by Flip. He knows he can coach rings around this guy.
It's gonna come down to rebounding. If the Spurs rebound well, they can win, but if they play like a bunch of pussies, they won't.

IMO ....even though spurs lost quite handily to pistons. In some weird way i think pop gave those games...CIA pop at his best...(by not revealing themselves to early) like last night's game against the lakers...somehow i knew that small lineup he was using in the first half was just a cover to what was coming in the third ;-) he outsmarted the zen master...it was the bigs in that quarter that came alive....
back to the spurs/pistons...again those losses can serve as amunition....detroit thinking they are invincible then come the SPURS with their SURPRISE ATTACK!!!!!
RASHO!!!
j/k but i honestly think those losses WILL serve a purpose!

Because Bruce Bowen is allowed to foul 500 times a game and no one ever calls it, Tim Duncan gets so many calls it's ridiculous, the refs hate Rasheed, and because the league will rig it for the Spurs since Tony Parker is dating Eva Longoria.

Spurs still have the best player in the series, just like last year, and in my mind that's the ultimate tiebreaker. In a series this close, don't pick against the legend.

the Nets are scary but i don't trust them much because they are like a roller coaster ride.. win 10 and lose 5 in a row.... but then it could either be miami or Indiana that could suprise the pistons and defeat them..like what Aaronstampler said the Spurs will have a fair more easy road this time than last so it means they will be less bruised and more ready to grind it out with the Pistons this time around...

Pistons are just -2L on the Spurs, but
1. the Spurs have been without Manu at all in several games, 3 different injuries, and with a limited Manu in his comeback games.
2. Our main guy, Tim has been about 50% most of the season, at least on offense, and worse on defense, where he is the foundation.
The Pistons starting 5 plus Dice and Mo have played all 71 games, healthy all the way.
3. Spurs have been a little more than first-50-games mediocre, probably because of resting on their Championship laurels, bored with the season compared to playoff intensity.
The Pistons, motivated by their admitted mission to win Finals HCA, are probably playing near their best, while the Spurs still have some/more headroom to step it up.
The two Ls vs Pistons cannot not be ignored or forgotten, but Tim was hurting, and Manu didn't play in one and was still not 100%/didn't start the other.
The two teams are very evenly matched, and is why I've agreed with the Pistons all year long that Finals HCA will be critical.
If the Pistons can win the first 2 games @DET, they will win the series.
If the Spurs split the first 2 games, the series will probably go 7 games, again, and right down to the last quarter, again, but the last quarter will be in Auburn Hills this year.

I totally agree with this. That is why I feel a healthy Miami would be a tougher matchup than the Pistons. The Shaq factor cannot be ignored. Ronnie Nunn is on NBATV each week arguing that referees do not give respect to certain players. That is BS. Shaq will turn TD into the Big Contusion before he lets the Spurs win another championship.

After the games against Detroit this year, if rebounding is the key I fear for our San Antonio Pussies.
I don't think we have a CHANCE to rebound with the detroit front court.
Sorry.
Detroit owned us on the boards the last 2 games, they owned the boards in the playoffs last year, and they will probably own us there again.
They have an excellent shooter in Rip, Chancey is a masterful creator who can muscle parker while getting to the paint, and they have great athleticism in the front court on both ends of the court. They have a long, quick guy to defend Tim in sheed, who can draw him out by shooting 3's.
What WE have is a quicker back court, an actual bench (other than macdice and a defensive pg they have nothing), a significantly better shooting percentage (due largely to a nearly unstoppable driving pg), as well as better perimeter d.
A serious question; Detroit runs more this year, and they have been successful with it. Will that style will work when transition points are harder to come by in the playoffs? Maybe against the rest of the league, but I don't expect they can do it with 3 getting back. Their only hope is to force alot of turnovers against Tim and Beno (again), and I think we have that handled for the most part.
A LOT depends on the health of Tim, Tony and Manu. All 3 have been dinged up recently, and all 3 need to be feeling good to have a shot. If so, I like our chances. If not, odds are it wasn't our year.

where's your faith in S.A. front court..remember the first half nazr barely played and timmy was hobbling...Oberto can be a good rebounder if they just put him in for that

The Spurs and Pistons RBs are very weird.
For the season, Spurs RB diff is +0.69/13th, while the Pistons are -0.70/19th.
( while Mavs are +3.65/3rd. )

Because the Pistons played the New Jersey Nets FOUR TIMES, not twice. 2 wins, 2 losses for each team. Pistons would have the homecourt against the Nets should the two teams meet in the playoffs. Edge: Detroit.

I say it's 50/50. These two teams are so evenly matched up. Both of them play team basketball. The pistons got the best starting five, but the spurs got the best player TD and the best defensive player Bowen. The spurs got the better coach, but I believe the pistons are good under any coaches because they already know how to play their defense. The spurs have a deeper bench, but Hunter, Dice, Delk have been playing with consistency lately.
The pistons are absolutely better and deeper than last year. The spurs are still so great therefore is the only team other than the pistons in the league deserve the champion.
I love both teams. But I hope the pistons will win. ^^

I actually think the frontcourt situation is pretty much a wash, mainly because of Ben's iffy scoring. Seems like Mohammed's been looking pretty good lately. Factor in the backups - Horry & Rasho v. Dice and maybe Davis, and I wouldn't claim the Pistons have an edge up front.
I would give a slight edge to the Pistons guards, but _real_ slight, banking on Billups' strength and Rip's speed over the quickness of Parker & Ginobili Could go either way in a series, though, and in a single game, one or two bad calls or bad no-calls could tip the balance either way.
Wildcards to me are Tayshaun and the bench. Figuring Bowen will spend a lot of time on Rip or Chauncey, Tayshaun's got to light it up; if he lets Parker or Ginobili keep him under control, we're in trouble. As for the bench, I'm a lot less concerned about ours now than I was earlier, but except for Lindsey, we don't know how they'll perform in the crunch. If Delk and Delfino play like they're capable of, that'll be huge.
(PS - the 2 regular season games don't mean diddly-jack-fugall.)

1) Tim Duncan
2) Pop>>>Flip Saunders
3) Our bench: Finley, Horry, Barry, NVE if they get their perimeter game going in any game, Pistons are doomed
4) Poor Pistons defense...Pistons may be able to "turn on" their defense whenever they want, but Spurs know how to play it for 48 minutes and for longer stretches. Pistons defense this season is noticibly worse. They let the freakin Sixers shoot 50%+ for 3 quarters the other night!
I think 1 and 2 are the most important though.

IMO the Spurs have the better bench.
I keep seeing this over on the Pistons board.. We beat em twice.. No sweat.
Well, remember that was a few months ago.
Don't ask me why, but the Spurs didn't even seem all that interested in playing either of those games. Now the one on Christmas I can understand, but the other one, it just looked like they decided to mail in a game.
The Spurs you will see in the playoffs will not be that same team. Count on it.
It would not surprise me at all to see it come down to the last game again.
But then again, what if the Heat takes it to 7 again, and those guys are worn out for the first couple of games.
What if the injury free factor catches up with the Pistons.
I'm not saying they can't win it. I'm saying they are going to have to come get it though.

Manu will have to dominate his matchup against Tayshaun again, and TP will have to man-up on D against either Rip or Chauncey. You figure Bowen will guard whichever is hotter, but Parker's gonna have to take the other one. Hopefully he can wear them down on the other end of the floor.
Also, we'll have to shoot well from 3. That's one advantage we have. More guys who can hit 'em....
And Nazr will have to score as many as Ben...

The Spurs are much better than they were in December and January. Aside from the fact that Manu is better and Tim's figuring out how to play around his injury, Parker's got his mid-range jumper going; Finley's more consistent; Barry's playing the best that he's ever played for the Spurs; Horry's getting in playoff mode; Nazr finally truly solid; and we've got a true inside/outside game going. And, we still have a stellar defense. The Pistons are basically the same team from last year. I don't think home court will matter. It won't go seven.
