MannyIsGod

Fucking German ref...fucking Cox Communications.

MannyIsGod
06-22-2006, 09:57 AM
Man, the task is so daunting now. 2 goals in 45 minutes is a big deal to ask for a team that has managed to put up 2 points and only one of their own full doing in 2 1/2 games. I really feel completely screwed by that call, but I hope Arena finally throws caution to the wind. A tie isn't good enough for a godamn thing, so he better go for the win. Italy is taking care of business.

Americans don't get into tricycle racing either...that doesn't mean they don't get it.

There's a reason America is the least fucked up country in the World...and 99% of that has to do with the fact that we realize Soccer sucks and the rest of the word is more corrupt...

MannyIsGod
06-22-2006, 10:03 AM
Donovan is still better than Dempsy because Donovan plays much better all around. Dempsy might be better offensivly but thats it.

Either way Dempsy is playing bad ass and I'm glad he of all people got the goal. Do Texas proud baby!

MannyIsGod

True but I am soley making that decision on this world cup. Donovan hasn't done jack. Dempsey, who barely gets playing time, has already made an impact.

Seriously, why does everyone always act like Americans don't know about Soccer? We all play it as kids...we were the first country outside of England to play in an international Soccer contest...we had the second or third professional Soccer League in the World...and when Women's Soccer was introduced we dominated it as much as any male team has dominated Men's Soccer(women's team has first tier athletes, men's team has 5th ot 6th). We just found other stuff we like better. The Horse and carriage isn't going to come back in style here...and neither is Soccer.

PS...go read about how our team is being treated over there and the measures they have to take for their safety.

Eye of the beholder....

When was the last time you played competitive soccer... not as a child?

Indeed the perspective element is there, I just don't believe that there is a 'wrong' or 'right' on this issue... You either like soccer, or you don't.

I like hockey even though I've never played it or watch it often, becuase I realize that what they do is hard as hell. Also, I'm 10x more a fan of the S.A. Spurs than of any soccer team out there irregardless of the fact that I'm 10x a better soccer player than a basketball one - go figure that being 5'-10'' is a disadvantage in basketball, but 'irrelevant' in soccer -- unless I were playing against midgets.

So are you saying the athletes in American Soccer are of the same caliber they are in any of our other pro sports?

Is that what you are saying?

Nope... but not because they are incapable of it... The pool is simply smaller...

And if not...who is preventing those athletes from playing Soccer?
America's great athletes follow the same pattern as generations before them... a neutral systemic recursion... albeit one that happens to hurt US soccer.

Or we would just adopt the metric system like everybody else....

Mundane things like distances (miles vs. kilometers) or weight (lbs vs. kg) might not seem that different but when trying to reconcile those same units with pressures, energy, volumes, flux, etc... the U.S. system simply becomes innefficient.

I agree. Group E was just as difficult, if not more so, than the so-called Group of Death (Arg, Ned, SM, IC). I'm not making excuses, because our players showed great effort, especially in the Italy game.

Time for us to get a new coach, preferably one with European or South American experience. Better coaching might have made a difference here.

When was the last time you played competitive soccer... not as a child?

Indeed the perspective element is there, I just don't believe that there is a 'wrong' or 'right' on this issue... You either like soccer, or you don't.

IT's alright...but what I find annoying is the constant aire of superiority put off by Soccer Fans as if the game is too sophisticated for the average American to understand...

In fact, it's the least sophisticated game of them all. It's a bunch of dudes, trying to kick a ball.

Now if you want to argue that is it the purest ball related sport you might have a point...but still not one that justifies Soccer being more popular than our other pro sports...

Walking is the purest form of transportation...that doesn't mean it doesn't suck.

I like hockey even though I've never played it or watch it often, becuase I realize that what they do is hard as hell. Also, I'm 10x more a fan of the S.A. Spurs than of any soccer team out there irregardless of the fact that I'm 10x a better soccer player than a basketball one - go figure that being 5'-10'' is a disadvantage in basketball, but irrelevant in soccer.

American's like sports that provide a consistent and constant adrenaline rush, either provided by incredible feats of athleticism and violent competition, or else by situations within the course of the game...

It's in this area that Soccer is not competitive with basketball and football and arguably, even baseball.

And this is by design...American's redesigned Soccer to provide more of these moments, and the result is American Football.

Hockey is similar to Soccer in it's dearth of adrenaline filled moments created by athleticism and situations, but at least Hockey has lots of violence to compensate.

Nope... but not because they are incapable of it... The pool is simply smaller...

America's great athletes follow the same pattern as generations before them... a neutral systemic recursion... albeit one that happens to hurt US soccer.

#1. I think it's more like...they go where the money is. Although nothing is keeping them from goung to Europe where there is substantial money in Soccer.

His major fault is he losing the ball too quickly ala Bobby Convey. He's playing in the MLS. He should be dominating the game. He has no goals but his has 4 assists. That's still not good enough. I only hope he shows some promise.

The superiority angle doesn't come from claiming soccer is a superior sport... it comes from the U.S. not wanting to do what the rest of the world does. Something along the lines of a 'we're better than that' attitude.

Americans love sports that are fed to them by our media... sports that the urban population can excel in (where most basketball stars come from - the inner city) and in the case of rural America football and baseball...

The media traditionally held back soccer broadcasts because they couldn't make enough money out of them... They suffered from a lack of sponsorships because the game was continual, had no breaks, and only had one intermission. Compare with Baseball, Football, and Basketball where millions of dollars are made off of commercials during 'time-outs'.... it's complicated and not as black and white as it would seem.

#1. I think it's more like...they go where the money is. Although nothing is keeping them from goung to Europe where there is substantial money in Soccer.

#2. They go where they envision themselves performing in a heroic situation athletically. And it's not Soccer.

$$$$ talks... but so does uncomfort; the thought of having to embrace different cultures... Americans simply don't like it. We'd rather other cultures embrace us... or our sports heroes 'ala Jordan. We export philosophies and markets but not sports stars.

Most U.S. stars like the Reggie Bushes, Shaqs, Kobes, the Lebrons, the A.I.s, T.O.s, <--- your typical super athletes live a life catered around them and the superfluous eccentricities provided by this country... some to the outlandish and unneccesary 'bling-bling' extent...

Notice how your Peyton Mannings, your Pete Sampras', even your Tiger Woods', and why not, Tim Duncan himself <--- whose games are predicated more on skill don't live by this precarious lifestyle... they're also not the most popular... (If Tiger where 'white' he would just be another Greg Norman, or another Jack Nicklaus -- but the mainstream sports audience would not be after his every move).

You confuse laziness with superiority...

America needs to improve from inside. you need a competitive league. that means bringing foreign players in the league - but not Beckhams and Ronaldos, that's too big of a gap for MLS to make. They should try with second tier Brazil, Argentina players or some minor African nation players (ala Angola nationals). That won't bring improvement to your national team in 4,8 years but it will help in the long run.

Also you need a good youth system, a pyramid. In Europe if a 16 year old is too good, they will stick him in U-18, if he's still too good they will get him in senior B team and then in senior A team. He will never get in a position where he's the best player on the team for a long time and stagnate.

Why do you have to cut one down to prop the other up? The U.S. is so huge and so fragmented media-wise these days (witness the continued lackluster ratings for the NBA finals), that soccer can get its own following without cutting into the popularity of American football. No one's trying to take the Super Bowl away from anybody here.

I get a sense of "If I can't be the best, I'm damned if I'm going to play this sport" from you. The U.S. doesn't have to be the best in the world at everything you know, and it's an impossibility anyway. So why all the disparaging comments?

Americans don't get into tricycle racing either...that doesn't mean they don't get it.

There's a reason America is the least fucked up country in the World...and 99% of that has to do with the fact that we realize Soccer sucks and the rest of the word is more corrupt...

hmm, I don't even think I need to explain why this is bullshit. Claiming that football has something to do with countries being corrupt is bullshit! and I for one would love for you to base your bullshit takes on some evidence! something other than fucking coincidence.

What the fuck does it matter if you played it first or not?? American's don't like it simply because American's love everything fast, neat and easy to understand, simple as that. #2. They go where they envision themselves performing in a heroic situation athletically. And it's not Soccer.
pfff... scoring a goal in football is ten times more heroic than anything you could do in basketball, and yet noone is claiming its the better sport. Just because you don't understand what makes football exciting does not mean it isn't. Billions of people love football above any other sport, but because Americans don't like it, all of a sudden it lacks in excitemetn and heroism! Do everyone a favor and don't comment on shit you clearly don't understand.

And BTW....the record for highest average attendance at any World Cup...was set at the one held in America.

It's not that we don't give the game a chance, I've watched every game, I had an emotional investment, but wasn't as exciting as watching most games fo the NBA Finals featuring two teams I don't even care about...it's just not competitive with our pro sports int he excitement factor, and as such it attracts low tiered athletes, $$$, and fan support.
Football is not a sport where anyone can watch and be entertained. I disagree with you, I've watched games in which I have nothing invested, and found them incredible matches.

And this is why Europe continually lags behind the US economically...

damn, again with the officials. You're complaining about officiating in football as a reason for American's disliking it, when officiating in basktball is as bad or even worse! and its ten times easier to officiate in basketball!

Look, you had a couple of bad calls this world cup, I agree, but it has nothing to do with respect or wether FIFA wants the US to "feel welcome" http://spurstalk.com/forums/images/smilies/smirolleyes.gif FIFA can't regulate what the refs do in the game, unless you're proposing they benefit American's so they start getting interested...

I think the main reason American's don't like football is because they have never been godo at it. American's are only interested in things they can be good at. Ex: (albeit a lame one) Women's football never got coverage until they started winning championships, before then noone knew, or could give a fuck about women's football. Most American's don't have loyalty towards your squads, its either they do well, and then you support them, or they don't exist plain and simple.

pfff... scoring a goal in football is ten times more heroic than anything you could do in basketball, and yet noone is claiming its the better sport. Just because you don't understand what makes football exciting does not mean it isn't. Billions of people love football above any other sport, but because Americans don't like it, all of a sudden it lacks in excitemetn and heroism! Do everyone a favor and don't comment on shit you clearly don't understand.

Football is not a sport where anyone can watch and be entertained. I disagree with you, I've watched games in which I have nothing invested, and found them incredible matches.

damn, again with the officials.

No offense, but Mexico wouldn't beat Brasil if their life depended on it. Everything else I agree with

Look at Mexico's last 8 head-to-head matches with Brasil. I could be wrong but I believe we have beat them more times in that same span than Argentina.

The problem with Mexico is that they always play to the level of their opposition. Be it Italy or Martinica... Brasil or Jamaica... Mexico can't seem to play at a consistent level.... that's where they lack class. Argentina always plays like Argentina (meaning they always play like they know they will win).

Ever since Mexico beat them in the Confederations Cup Final in 1999 Brasil has had trouble with Mexico. They still can beat us when it matters, there's no denying that... but Mexico has been a bigger thorn on Brasil's side lately...

Of course in this World Cup I acknowledge Mexico is playing like crap... In fact, I congratulated the Argentineans on their sure win next week... and actually find it surprising that they made it out of group play in spite of LaVolpe's stubborness.

Here it is...

01/21/96 México 2-0 Brasil Copa de Oro Los Angeles
04/30/97 México 0-4 Brasil Amistoso Miami
07/16/97 México 2-3 Brasil Copa América Santa Cruz, Bolivia
12/16/97 México 2-3 Brasil Copa Confederaciones Riyadh A.S.
07/03/99 México 1-2 Brasil Copa América Cd. del Este
07/14/99 México 0-2 Brasil Copa América Cd. del Este
08/04/99 México 4-3 Brasil Copa Confederaciones Final México DF.
03/07/01 México 3-3 Brasil Amistoso Guadalajara (I went to this game it was amazing! Romario scored with about 20 seconds left to give the verde-amarela the tie).
07/12/01 México 1-0 Brasil Copa América Cali, Colombia
05/01/03 México 0-0 Brasil Amistoso Guadalajara
06/13/03 México 1-0 Brasil Copa de Oro México DF.
06/27/03 México 1-0 Brasil Copa de Oro Final México DF.
07/18/04 México 0-4 Brasil Copa América Piura, Peru
06/19/05 México 1-0 Brasil Copa Confederaciones Hannover Germany

Now this doesn't mean México is better than Brasil.... far from it...

It just negates MaNuMaNiA's implied argument that México cannot compete with them.

How many penalties should Australia had? 3?

The hold on Viiduka, the one that was called, and the handball in the box. Ridiculous.

Wtf happened with the yellow cards at the end? 3 for one player? Wow.

Guus is a genious, seriously!

Croatia shouldn't have gone back to an all defensive layout, they looked much more dangerous when in a blanaced attack, and Australia had trouble controlling there offense.

hmm, I don't even think I need to explain why this is bullshit. Claiming that football has something to do with countries being corrupt is bullshit! and I for one would love for you to base your bullshit takes on some evidence! something other than fucking coincidence.

What's the favorite Sport of Argentina?

I rest my case.

Point proved.

What the fuck does it matter if you played it first or not?? American's don't like it simply because American's love everything fast, neat and easy to understand, simple as that. Its a matter of tastes. :lmao

It matters because Soccer pundits act like it's something we haven't discovered or something or are just trying to be different...

Here's the deal...we had organized Soccer here, before it was even popular in it's current form worldwide, before FIFA was even a Glint in Pele's eye...

It evolved into something different here, before it became the "World's Game". It had nothing to do with trying to be different...it had everything to do with what many here found more exciting...

And the millions of immigrants that have come here from Soccer loving countries, like England, Germany, and Mexico have also made the switch when given the choice....

at you trying to equate women football with mens! :lmao! for fucks sake, if I tried to equate WNBA with the NBA you would laugh at my face, but because this is football, a sport you haven't a clue about clearly, there is no poblem with the comparison huh?

NFL is to Soccer as Soccer is to Women's Soccer.

Besides...it just shows how far ahead of the curve we are...wake me when the women in your enlightened soccer crazed country are fit to hold the bras of ours :smokin

Also, the US team needs all that protection because of political reasons that have nothing to do with the sport.

And this proves what? The rest of the world are dumbasses who want to punish the innocent?

oh yes, clearly you have football all firgured out huh? http://spurstalk.com/forums/images/smilies/smirolleyes.gif That's why Ivory Coast had such a great time against all white teams like Argentina, Holland (well they have a black guy, but not a very important one).

RIF...I qualified the statement with the word "American".

If American white guys liked walking or running...they wouldn't have invented cars.

Besides...the Dutch and Argentines don't speak English as a first language,...therefore they can't be white.

:lmao! again with the women football shit, pathetic. I have nothing against women football, but its kids games compared to men's football.

I said arguably...Baseball is a lazy slowpaced game but it does have it's intense moments...

pfff... scoring a goal in football is ten times more heroic than anything you could do in basketball, and yet noone is claiming its the better sport.

Oh yeah? Try making a basket with only your feet and see if you still agree.

Just because you don't understand what makes football exciting does not mean it isn't. Billions of people love football above any other sport,

I didn't sat it lacks it...I said it doesn't have as many of those moments as basketball and football do.

Football is not a sport where anyone can watch and be entertained. I disagree with you, I've watched games in which I have nothing invested, and found them incredible matches.

The superiority angle doesn't come from claiming soccer is a superior sport... it comes from the U.S. not wanting to do what the rest of the world does. Something along the lines of a 'we're better than that' attitude.

False...Soccer evolved into Football here before FIFA existed...before the popularity of the British exported form of Soccer had even come to fruitition...

Soccer went the way of Water Polo(which we pretty much invented in it's current form), Rugby, etc.

Americans love sports that are fed to them by our media... sports that the urban population can excel in (where most basketball stars come from - the inner city) and in the case of rural America football and baseball...

Um all Soccer requires is a ball...and no other equipment...it can be played anywhere. That's a not a valid reason for it's lack of popularity.

The Media has crammed Soccer down the American publics throat for years...

We have always had pro leagues here...

We had Pele here. They covered it...no one cared compared to the other sports.

$$$$ talks... but so does uncomfort; the thought of having to embrace different cultures... Americans simply don't like it. We'd rather other cultures embrace us... or our sports heroes 'ala Jordan. We export philosophies and markets but not sports stars.

Um...this is the most false statement I have ever read...every culture is ethnocentric...Amerca probably least so...

We tend to embrace progressive and intelligent aspects of cultures and dismiss shitty ones.

Case in point: We welcome Mexican food here with open arms...but wholesale reject the idea of bring Mexican Government here.

And we ourselves are an exported philosophy and market.

And by the way...so is Soccer...it didn't simultaneously emerge in it's current form everywhere...it was a British export.

Most U.S. stars like the Reggie Bushes, Shaqs, Kobes, the Lebrons, the A.I.s, T.O.s, <--- your typical super athletes live a life catered around them and the superfluous eccentricities provided by this country... some to the outlandish and unneccesary 'bling-bling' extent...

And you don't think this is true of Soccer stars in other countries? I bet it is.

Phenomanul

Guess your weren't being facetious afterall....

hmmm

I'll reply when I get more time... I actually have a soccer game to play and I'm late... :lol
For real.

For now I'll just address the ''most false statement you've ever read'' part...

I was talking about people... everything else in your comment dealt with philosophies... not people.. or in this case sports stars...

I couldn't imagine LeBron trying to play in the Spanish Basketball League (if they happened to overtake the NBA in terms of prestige - which I know wouldn't happen) and going out of his way to try to adjust to their culture... I just don't see this happening... America's stars were never about that. Never have been. In fact, I can't think of any bonified American sports star who became a star in another country and not here.

So they seek money here in proven sports... nothing wrong with that... again it's a neutral systemic problem that happens to hamper the growth of US soccer.

I was at a big plastics show in Chicago this week... on Tuesday morning, there was not a German engineer to be seen on the floor... ALL of them were in the lounge area watching the game.

And even as loud as dozens of molding machines running simultaneously might be, the screams of glee when Germany scored could be heard above it all.

I'm so used to the stoic, serious German temperament that it was quite strange to see men in three-piece suits and spectacles jumping around and dancing.

I was in a Depression for months after Cameroon didn't qualify after a missed PK in qualifiers. :depressed

I think it was not, because some player from Korea touched the ball when she was on the way to Frei.

Yes Ghana will win Brazil 5 or 6-0.
:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

Ever heard of sarcasm. Or are you being sarcastic too.

I just want a good match. The problem is brazil can beat you in any way imaginable. They can get a wonder strike from outside, cross it in the middle and score, score off of ser pieces, dribble everyone and score. You name it. There is speed, power, pace, skill, finess, fitness, grace, accuracy at every position. I don't think Ghana will win but I'm just hoping for a good match and I want to see Ghana compete.

Nay, Korea deflected it. The Assistant fucked Korea by raising his flag.

Agree, I want to se a good match too.
But Ghana can win, because Brazil team will underate them, and they will perhaps not play with all the power agains them. Everything is possible.
