Finally, a place to talk about football (soccer for you Americans).

Let's get the breakdown and verbal fireworks going. USA vs. Mexico, USA vs. France, Mexico vs. Argentina, Argentina vs. England, Argentina vs. Brazil, Argentina vs. everyone else, lol we can have fun in here!

Who are your favourites? Do you agree with the common opinion among pundits that Brazil will win? Who are the teams that could prevent the Brazilians winning the World Cup for the Sixth time? Do you expect any surprises a la Greece in Euro 2004?

I've seen forum members from Argentina, USA, France, Mexico, Australia, Holland, Poland, Italy, Germany, England, Serbia and Montenegro and Ecuador, so don't be shy and post your say in here!

Damn Mexicans have an easy group while the US got hosed.Portugal is pretty good - I'm pretty sure they're better than the Mexicans.

However, since Angola is an OK team and Iran aint' very good the Mexicans are almost guaranteed to get 2nd place at worst.

i'll be rooting for holland :king

brazil is main favourite, england might have a good tournament, france will look for a vengance, but won't quite make it. Germany hasn't put together a good squad since euro96 and it doesn't look it will change, but they'll be playing at home so they will get enough "help". Italy is having problems with injuries, but their luck never leaves them. Argentina and Spain will underachieve.

My tip for a surprise is Ivory Coast.

Damn that Argentine group is deadly...

Usually, the host team does really well. However, Germany's D is about as good as the Raptors.

I would love the Americans to do well, but my dream final is Brazil-Italy. Is it possible?

I was referring to the friendly they had in January of this year. Germany's defense was non-existent.

The US has a good squad, they have made giant leaps progressing since 1990. The World Cup held there back in 1994, the creation of the MLS, and having some players in the European clubs have helped. However, the draw is very tough, probably the second closest and hardest group after Argentina's.

But this is football, anything can happen and that's the beauty of this sport. They can somehow snatch a draw or even a win against Italy, and then their chances will look good. The Czech Republic is a very good team, but they are somewhat underachievers, their technical abilities don't match their results. Ghana is the typical African team: Very strong physically, good technique, but they lack organization and the squad is full of internal problems.

It will be a very open group, but if the US manages to go through, then who knows?. From the second round and on, it's a 50-50 chance in every game, 90 minutes (with the posibility of overtime and penalties), where anything can happen.

USA will not even get out of there group or notch up a win, i find them very overrated, rankin 4th in the world playin against scrub regional teams :(:( to get that high is nothing special, i dont think you guyz can beat australia.

Now back to australia, i just love it how the media here boasts about the team winnin it and all, everytime they win, they boasts, when they lose the media goes hide under a rock. I dont really care how australia does in the WC. Player to look out for josip skoko, my favourite player on the team who is very underrated. We only play good in friendlies compared to international competitions :(:(.

The team that i want to win it all is netherlands who is the darkhorse of the comp, they have the best squad imo for the last decade, too bad they sucked at qualifyin n shit, they remind me of a portland blazers 98/99 team, team stacked with talent at every position, but cant play together as a team.

Cufre, Scaloni, Maxi Rodriguez and Cruz are in, while Zanetti, Demichelis, Samuel and Aguero are out? I don't understand those choices, is he intentionally trying to get a first round exit?

So? odds are mostly done for BRITISH people who gamble on the World Cup. Since those odds are done by a BRITISH company, for ENGLISH fans, who usually bet for their team (that's ENGLAND), they don't give their own national team bad odds, it would be a financial disaster if somehow England manages to win.

Understood, Mike?

Yes the second best player i`ve ever seen.If he can keep up the perfomances for a few more seasons who knows?
The European cup tomorrow(Henry v Ronaldinho).
He`s definately the best player in the world at the moment. But Henry on his day is capable of anything.Brazil and France are in with a great chance of winning World cup, just because these 2 on the day can do anything.

I don't think that we have many chance to win the world cup (italy). I don't know if you know what is happened in last 2 weeks in italy: the general manager of Juventus (Luciano Moggi) was discovered to phone the referee asking for help during the match of the Juventus. The police discovered that this system is running up from "at least) 1999 but many people suspect that all the juventus wins are fake (since Moggi was nominated GM of Juventus, in 1994). The indagine (i don't know the exact word in english) touch many people:1 general and 1 captain of Guardia di Finanza, the GEA (the biggest company of agency for player, where the boss is Moggi's son) Giraudo (another biggest man of Juventus) 2 former minister(of the intern and economy), many journalist and many many referees. Moggi is accused to be a "godfather" that created a biggest "cupola" in order to advantage Juventus.
There are several other clubls involved: Lazio, Fiorentina (all clubs have many helps from the referee, after have asked to Moggi). Siena e Messina (clubs accused to be "colonies" juventus: for example in Siene there are 7 players of juventus' proprietys)

There`s talk of Juve being relegated to a lower division?
Is buffon involved?
Yes, Juve will probably be relegate to a lower division. Buffon is involved, with 20 players, in "football bet" (players can't bet if are profesionist) this is another story...

Holland's D doesn't look the best to me.

Still: GO HOLLAND!

True and on top of that our coach Marco van Basten decided to leave the top scorer of the dutch competition at home in Klaas Jan Huntelaar who scored 30 goals this season.

Also Seedorf and Davids have not been selected.
For the coach it's not about names he says, well Marco how you think they got their names well known?

Holland has a lot of good atackers so that should not be a problem, but they will miss Davids - he's one of the best defensive midfilders.

I just hope if it happens, it doesn't happen on penalties

Well, their current squad is probably the worst in all their World Cup appareances. Basically it's "please Ballack save us from disaster". They have a couple of good role players and some youngsters (Klose, Podolski, Hinkel).

But, if they manage to play well as a team, as a solid unit...then they could make it. When the Germans play as a unit, they are one really tough mofos to beat. Just look at the last World Cup, their squad wasn't great, they didn't play good, but they took their chances and made it into the final.

As Gary Lineker once said: "Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans win."

Can any of you recommend a good website--kind of like Spurstalk--where I could follow the World Cup? It doesn't necessarily need to be oriented toward one particular team (although it's obvious from my signature that I'm rooting for Brazil). Just a place where I can lurk in the discussion area and get a feel for the dynamics of the tournament, since I pretty much only watch soccer when the WC comes on. It can be in English, Spanish or Portuguese.

are you serious?? http://spurstalk.com/forums/images/smilies/smilol.gif ok let me paint you a picture. Your ONLY chance of reaching the semifinals would be to get 1st place in your group. By doing this you get to play Croatia in the Round of Sixteen. I think the US would do well to make it into the 2nd round of play again. I do agree that this is the best (potentialy) US team we've ever fielded, but this is also a incredibly hard group we're in. If the team is healthy and Keller plays out of his mind (they way Brad Fiedel did in 02), then I can see then making it into the 2nd and then making a bit of noise. But they aren't going to beat the powerhouse teams unless they go Greece on this tournament.

I'd feel better about the chances for the USA if more USA players were seeing significant time in the top European leagues. I don't find that MLS is a particularly high level of football and I actually thought the emphasis on MLS between 1994 and 1998 played a big role in the USA's terribly disappointing performance in France. It's promising, to me at least, that fairly young guys like Beasley and O'Brien are getting at least some seasoning with good European teams, but until most of the American players are contributors in European A leagues, I don't think American hopes should be terribly high.

Funny, I thought O'Brien got away with a handball, in the opposing team's box no less against Mexico in the second round...

He should have been red-carded for that deliberate play and Mexico should have been awarded a penalty.... Instead the Mexican squad was scored on in the ensueing fastbreak generated by O'Brien's punched ball. Mexico unfortunately lost their cool and never recovered...

BTW FIFA permenantly sanctioned the referee (for the bad officiating in that particular game) and he can no longer 'ref' a WC game again... Stern should follow suit and retire Bavetta.

Everyone knows the FIFA rankings are bogus. The only reason why the US is ranked above teams like England and Argentina is because they play all year round in Concacaf against teams like Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, Panama, etc. Meanwhile teams in Conmebol have to compete against Brasil, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay etc, and teams in UEFA play against the likes of England, France, Holland, Germany, Italy, Croatia, etc.

Its true that the ranking takes some measures to level the playing field sort of speak, but they aren't nearly enough to accurately depict the strength of each team.

Anyone who knows anything about football knows England is several times better than the US, and yet if you were to judge by the ranking one would think the US the far greater team.

Here's (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/grant_wahl/06/01/ronaldinho.qa/index.html) an interview on si.com with Ronaldinho. Some quotes from it:

When the finest soccer player on Earth arrives for an interview, you half-expect him to be wearing some sort of iconic signifier, like the Pope's miter or Miss Universe's sash or a boxer's championship belt. Something, in other words, that says, Behold, the king of the world.

But here comes Brazil's Ronaldinho, the two-time reigning World Player of the Year, wearing nothing of the sort. He's decked out in NBA/hip-hop mode: a black Air Jordan ensemble, LeBron James signature shoes and enough ice -- a diamond-studded crucifix, a platinum R10 medallion and a carat-covered watch -- to make Allen Iverson blush.
:lol

And:

SI.com: What are your impressions of the United States?

Ronaldinho: I love the United States. I've been there with the Brazilian national team and with Barcelona. I've never had the satisfaction of going there for free time, but that's one of the plans I have, to go there and get to know the U.S. And to see basketball, which is something I love. One of my dreams is to see live basketball there, but I've never had the time or the opportunity.

But read the whole thing. It's got some great links to some You Tube clips, especially of one of Ronaldinho doing his elástica move in the air.

Don't tread on us is some patriotic American slogan said by I don't know who(will have to look that up) but I know it has some historical significance.

I remember it being on some type of flag with a snake.

Are you ready for some FUTBOL????????

A week from today the world will stop! Hopefully, all the craziness that's around will just fade away (at least for one month) and we'll all be able to enjoy this wonderful sport.

I tell you, I can't wait for this WC to start. I'm very anxious and, in a weird way, I'm kind of glad the Spurs lost because now I can completely focus on one sport.

I got my Argentina jersey ready, I've warned my bosses about my availability for the next month, I sent my whole family to Japan, and I'm just ready to sit on my couch and scream as many goals as possible. I have a pretty mixed group of friends and we'll all meet at my house to watch games of Argentina (my favorite team), Japan (second favorite), Costa Rica, Paraguay, France and, of course, the USA.

BTW, It's great to have this forum available!

It's "Don't tread on me" (or "Don't tread upon me") The phrase is from the Revolutionary War. The Rattlesnake (specifically the Timber Rattlesnake) signified resistance to British rule. It was uniquely American, slow to violence unless threatened and just kind of badass looking.
http://www.caribbeangardens.com/Visitor_Info/Visual%20Tour/Visual%20Tour%20Images/timber-rattlesnake.jpg
The 13 segments of the rattle signified the 13 original colonies. The phrase "Don't tread on me" was meant as a message to the British; Try to put us under your boot and we'll have no choice but to strike back.

It was used with the Gadsden Flag:

And the first Navy Jack:

Yes, I got that one. My friend brought it for me from Costa Rica. I don't think the tico population is very large around these places (mostly mexicans and south americans), but I really don't hang out much so I couldn't tell you exactly.

World Cup ban orders take effect

More than 3,000 people subject to football banning orders are set to hand their passports into police.
The orders, taken out against known football hooligans, will also require them to attend their local police station every time England play.

They are among measures designed to cut down on trouble involving fans during the World Cup in Germany.

Supporters who are found guilty of offences at the tournament will face magistrates on their return home.

England's opening game in Group B is on 10 June against Paraguay.

Police co-ordination

Everyone with a football banning order has already received a letter ordering them to surrender their passports on Tuesday.

If they fail to do so they could face six months in prison and a £5,000 fine.

We'll be looking at the German procedure right from the police station to the court

CPS lawyer David Blundell

Good behaviour

Bryan Drew, head of the UK Football Policing Unit, said the British authorities were doing all they could to co-ordinate their efforts with the German police.

"We've put a lot of effort into working with our German colleagues to say 'let's get this right'," he told BBC Radio Five Live.

He said the British police would seek to identify the risk supporters and do as much as they could with the powers available to stop them leaving the UK.

If any of them did cause trouble in Germany he promised to support the authorities there with prosecutions, and said those involved would face court on their return to the UK.
Any other countries doing this?

You and I pretty much agree except for Poland and the USA.
I'm actually not quite sure about USA and Czech Republic. I put Czech Rep. because they usually are very good, even though I don't really know much about the team. IMO it could go either way. Hopefully the US can reach the second round and play Brasil that way if you lose there is no real shame since it is Brasil and all, and if you win well... I don't think I need to tell you what happens if you beat Brasil http://spurstalk.com/forums/images/smilies/smilol.gif

Galavision will air two taped matches daily at 5 PM and 10 PM ET/PT. Matches TBA.

I'm rooting for Brazil because I used to live there and want to support my friends there who are going to be basket cases when Tuesday arrives (when Brazil plays Croatia), but I think Argentina is going to be the dark horse of this competition, and could go very far in the tournament. They've been keeping a low profile and don't have all the pressure of the hype that Brazil has had, and they have a strong squad, with a brilliant player in Messi. (I feel like such a cradle-robber saying this, but damn that boy is cute. :lol )

I'll also be rooting for the U.S., obviously, and am curious to see how far they can go. And for Trinidad and Tobago because a friend of mine is from there. But what I really want is a Brazil-Argentina final. :smokin

HTV commentary is usualy quite good, providing that their team isn't involved...

it was alright, not great. Germany was clearly superior throughout the whole game, the only reason Costa Rica got 2 goals is because of Germany's crappy defence. I mean come on! Germany had 21 shots to Costa Rica's 4. Nice goals though Frings' last goal was awesome! Germany is going to have to improve that D if they plan to take on teams the likes of Brasil, England, France, Argentina, Italy.

the offside trap was horrible. There were some missed calls on the offside but you only have to pay attention to Wanchope and that is all.

This game was great because it will keep US population watching :lol

Frings' goal was fantastic. Well-struck and perfectly-placed ball.

I wonder if Lehman gives way to Kahn against Poland.

it's not like it was his fault, the defense fucked up on both goals

I don't think Klinsman is willing to give in to his decision to start Lehman. Lehman didn't really get a chance to show how good he is goal. He got very few shots at him. The two that snuck by were due to horrible defense. Metzelder is one of the best defenders in the world. I'm surprised he let Wanchope let two slip by.

I don't disagree about the defense being weak, and I don't think I would make the change, either; but I wonder about the pressure on Klinsmann to make that change.

For example, it was interesting to see the television production crew go to flashes of Kahn at several points late in a game in which Lehman conceded two goals.
