The Cowboys have proved in the past that there is a plentiful supply of cocaine in Dallas, so Kemp would be a good fit.

NBA Notes: Injuries could lead Kemp to Mavericks
By Seattle Times news services

DALLAS — Shawn Kemp in a Mavericks uniform?

Unlikely, but don't rule it out. The loss of Keith Van Horn for possibly the rest of the season and the playoffs with a broken right hand has Dallas scrambling for help.

The question becomes how to get that help.

Though the Mavs (55-19) snapped a season-high three-game losing streak with Sunday's 103-79 rout of Denver, injuries have kept the team in limbo.

The Mavs petitioned the league Saturday night for a hardship exception to sign a free agent. According to the rule, at least four players would have to be injured and sidelined at least two weeks.

Devin Harris (quadriceps), Marquis Daniels (neck) and Adrian Griffin (hamstring) are also out.

Pavel Podkolzin could also be part of the injured list. The center is recovering from a stress fracture in his right foot and is essentially on a rehabilitation assignment with Fort Worth of the D-League.

Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks' president of basketball operations, hopes to get a ruling from the league today or Tuesday. Finding a replacement for Van Horn to play behind Dirk Nowitzki is the focus.

The team has checked into Kemp, the former Sonic, who retired three years ago because he was overweight. He has reportedly slimmed down in an attempt to make a comeback and met with coach Avery Johnson recently.

Team owner Mark Cuban admitted the current state of his team is somewhat disconcerting.

"It's not lucky," he said. "No one wants to lose games, but being healthy is more important."

Notes

• Jalen Rose (plantar fasciitis) and Stephon Marbury (knee) sat out New York's game against Philadelphia.
