Popovich Named Western Conference Coach of the Month

NEW YORK – The New Jersey Nets’ Lawrence Frank and San Antonio Spurs’ Gregg Popovich today were named the Eastern and Western Conference Coaches of the Month, respectively, for games played in March.

Frank led the Nets to a 12-3 month concluding with an eleven-game winning streak. New Jersey recorded a key 79-74 victory on the road over the Eastern Conference-leading Detroit Pistons on March 26 holding the Pistons to .340 shooting. They also held three straight opponents under 75 points defeating Detroit, Phoenix (110-72 on Mar. 27) and Memphis (86-74 on Mar. 29).

For the month, Popovich and the Spurs were 12-4, the best in the Western Conference. He had four players averaging double-figures in scoring and eleven players tallying double-figures in minutes for March. The Spurs beat the Pacific Division leading Phoenix Suns on the road on March 9 (117-93) and at home on March 17 (108-102). With a winning percentage of .672 over his tenure as head coach of the Spurs, Popovich has moved into fourth place all-time in career winning percentage and is second among active coaches in winning percentage (Phil Jackson, Los Angeles Lakers, is first).

Other nominees for the Coach of the Month award were Cleveland’s Mike Brown, Denver’s George Karl, Detroit’s Flip Saunders, Miami’s Pat Riley, Phoenix’s Mike D’Antonio and Sacramento’s Rick Adelman.

The Spurs' quality of play seems to be in direct proportion to Pop's blood-pressure level. Has anyone noticed that he seems to be having more of those vein-bursting moments lately? Gone are the days of the wise and mellow approach, hands nonchalantly tucked in sport jacket pockets.

Pop blowing a gasket, Tim with multiple 20+ games, Horry hitting key threes, Manu taking over the fourth quarter. Ah, I love the smell of playoffs in the morning!

Probably had to give it to at at least one month, by default, having the 2nd best record in NBA, they had to give him something. :lol
