Have you run a drive fitness test on it? It will usually give you an idea if it's a mechanical failure.

well thats the thing, the computer repair guy ran all these tests on everything, then he says the hard drive is bad and I need a new one.
So when I turn it on its just a black command screen I guess.

He probably ran a fitness test. If it failed that, you are usually boned. Very seldom the controller card can be replaced and it will work, but most of the time it's a mechanical breakdown that notebook drives are prone to because of the conditions they are subjected to (mostly the heat).

If there was anything really important on there you need, there's a good chance it could be recovered -- for alot of money -- but the drive itself is probably toast.

I'd go with a Seagate just for the warranty if nothing else. 5 years from date of manufacture, OEM or retail.
