View Full Version : Pop "Who needs a blow"?

Okay icksnay with the oral references.
Last night ESPN had their "guy' listen in on the Spurs huddle. 'Bout mid 3rd if I recall correctly. At that point Kings were handing the Spurs their asses at 17 points (or so) up. "Guy" reports that Pop was repeatedly asking "If any players wanted a blow (rest)."
I've already voiced my displeasure at Pop continuing to play the starters, esp the Big 3 large minutes on the obviously failed b2b season. Last night being a 16 hour turnaround at that. Seeing Parker fall down and clutch his leg was not good. Okay, he got up...
So now we have Pop asking them. As if a player is going to say "yes, take me out". It's wrong. Flat wrong. Coach should wear the pants, not vice versa. Look i have no problem with asking how players are. However Coach should make decision 100%.
What is right? Spurs are 53-7 with rest.
Bring on the Mavs.
Players tell their coaches all the time if they need rest, how else is the coach supposed to know?
Pop ain't telepathic...

Sexual euphamisms in sports is no new thing. In baseball, after the batters have taken batting practice, those who go out and collect the balls are said to be 'shagging'. So the Spurs needed a blow. These things happen.

C'mon. It's one thing to ask. It's another to assume if the players say nothing then they must stay in the game, as if a player would always tell the truth.. (Most) Pro athletes were and for are and for that matter pro athlete wannabes growing up are conditioned to stay in no matter what.
Exceptions would be Kobe in childhood, whereupon his father would chastise the other kids and call fouls on them every time Kobe missed. :lol

I knew quoting the ESPN guy quoting Pop in the subject title would be a mistake. :spin

That question is one of the more common questions asked by a basketball coach, at the college and pro level. It's probably more often asked on an individual basis, but it's still not out of the ordinary.

Can you tell us some examples of actual responses from players?

Me either.
Are you upset that Pop asked the players if they needed to come out?
I think that's very prevalent in all sports.

Pop asked who needed a blow, not who needed a blowjob.
Maybe it's just the people I grew up with, but I don't see that as a sexual reference. "Taking a blow" is just another way of saying taking a breather, or getting some air, or resting when you're short of breath.

You want to rephrase that?
(I'm sorry, but I couldn't help it)
