Near Record Heat Triggering Power Outages

The record heat has over-taxed San Antonio’s energy generating capacity, and rolling outages are taking place – not only here, but over a large portion of Texas. Pockets of San Antonio are experiencing 15-minutes outages as CPS Energy scrambles to find enough capacity to serve the entire city. These rolling outages are expected to continue until after sundown.

At this time there is not sufficient generating capacity in the region to reliably serve the public's electricity demand. It is extremely urgent that all electricity customers in the region reduce their use of electricity to the lowest level possible. This includes…

Making sure your thermostat is set at 78° or higher in the summer.
Don't use any electric lighting, appliances or equipment unless absolutely necessary for health or safety.
Don't open refrigerators and freezers more than necessary.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is doing everything possible to return to normal operations. ERCOT is the corporation that administers a portion of Texas' power grid serving approximately 85 percent of the state's electric load, including San Antonio.

Ours is fine too, considering that my no-insulation-and-crappy-old-window-having house is probably greatly contributing to the problem. :(

Yeah, mine is on 65 right now. It gets way too damn hot upstairs to leave it at 78. Fuck that. We don't live in an all utilities paid apartment to have to deal with that BS!

rolling brownouts here in Dallas...our power was out for like an hour.

"TXU is trying to save energy" the radio told me.

TXU is such a markass company. That's a bitch move.

Damn, the last time I heard of rolling outages it was in California a few years ago.

Of course, that turned out to all be part of Enron's scams . . .

Unfrickinbelievable. On the news just now they said that a quarter of the energy producing plants are down for maintenance right now because it's typically not hot this time of year.

It's almost fucking May. In Texas.

How stupid can you be?

On the real estate show last weekend they said San Antonio added over 100,000 new homes built last year. Now imagine each house has a 200 Amp box lol..

That's not counting ANY of the new retail footage. Which I bet is in the millions of square feet.

Despite all the publicity, anyone notice how they didn't ask anyone to conserve energy? Don't you think turning off unneccessary lights and appliances until nightfall, at least, was called for?

Um, yeah, I don't know what they're saying in SA, but up here in Dallas the top of the news was about the blackouts, how there would probably be more in the coming days if it remained hot, and to conserve energy as much as possible between the hours of 2 PM and 7 PM by turning off unnecessary appliances/electronics and bumping up the AC to 78 degrees.

Put down the conspiracy crack pipe.

Every announcement I heard (many) about the blackouts yesterday were accompanied by a plea to conserve as much as possible.
