LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Actor Tom Cruise and his fiance, actress Katie Holmes, welcomed the birth of a daughter on Tuesday, according to Cruise's publicist.

They named the girl Suri, which "has its origins in Hebrew, meaning 'princess,' or in Persian, meaning 'red rose,' " Cruise spokesman Paul Bloch said in a statement.

The baby weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces, he said, and was 20 inches long. Both mother and daughter were doing well, Bloch said.

This is the first child for Holmes, 27, a former star of the TV series "Dawson's Creek."

Cruise, 43, has an adopted son and daughter from his previous marriage to Academy-Award winning actress Nicole Kidman. Cruise was also previously married to actress Mimi Rogers. (Watch why stars are cool with parenthood , but not marriage -- 2:13)

The highly publicized romance of Cruise and Holmes -- dubbed TomKat by the media -- began about a year ago.

The "Mission: Impossible 3" star expressed his love for Holmes on a much-talked-about appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show, jumping on Winfrey's couch in apparent excitement.

When his romance with Holmes began, Cruise, an avowed Scientologist, had to fend off reports that a Scientology minder stood within inches of the couple at their every move. (Watch for the couple's spiritual plans for the child -- 1:10)

Media reports said Holmes was planning to give birth to the baby in a Church of Scientology-sanctioned "silent birth" procedure. Scientologists believe childbirth causes emotional stress to the newborn if it hears the mother groan in pain during delivery.

Actress Brooke Shields also gave birth Tuesday to a daughter, Grier Hammond Henchy, The Associated Press reported. Last year, Shields and Cruise had a public tiff after he criticized the actress for taking antidepressant medication after the birth of her first child.

In June, Cruise had an on-air confrontation with NBC "Today Show" host Matt Lauer over Cruise's opinion of psychiatry, which he has called a "pseudo-science."

Cruise recently told Parade magazine that his estranged father, Thomas Mapother III, was "a bully and a coward," and that he attempted a deathbed reconciliation. The reunion "was bittersweet," he told the magazine.
