Slomo is coming to town from Slovenia for a couple playoff games, so we are going out to dinner with him Sunday night around 7pm.

Anybody who wants to go, say so in this thread and I'll make a reservation.

Great restaurant! It's one of my favorite places to eat. I recommend the duck & chorizo chalupas, crab tinga tacos or the cochinita pibil. Unfortunately i'm gastrointestinally challenged right now so please eat well. The corn tortillas kick ass there. Food for Mayan gods.

I've always thought that if Austin Powers were Mexican then Acenar is kind of what his shag pad would look like.

ENJOY! :sombrero:

im going there for my friends birthday on tuesday too but i guess i can go twice, count batman in .......SLOMO please hook a brotha up with a bottle of that moonshine thanksBatman, I promised you one a while ago - and I did not forget. Actually I packed 6 bottles, which was over ambitious from me.

To make a long story short, I hope the customs officer at LAX drink those bottles and get really sick from it! :flipoff

But I'll Fedex one to you the moment I get back home - deal?

Did they confiscate all 6 bottles?

Slomo
04-21-2006, 07:21 PM
Did they confiscate all 6 bottles?yep!

The problem is that if you try to lie on the aplication form (everybody travelling to the US fills out two forms on the plane. One for the imigration authorities and one for customs) and get caught you're in serious trouble. So I never do that because your luggage goes through so many X-ray machines you're an idiot if you think they don't know what you're carrying.

Now visitors are allowed to bring in a certain amount of alcohol, cigarettes and other stuff (I believe one botlle of whiskey/brandy is free). For anything above that you have to pay customs duties - which is fine and usually they look at my form decide it's a little over the allowance and let me go, or not and make me pay duties on it (I freely admit that I was pushing it with 6 bottles).

This time I was unlucky in the sense that they actually visually inspected the content of my suitcase. And since this Brandy is so good because it's made privately by a friend of mine (it's moonshine OK) it does not have all the markings on the bottle that are required by the EU (there's not even a manufacturers name on there :lol ). To shorten the story: the guys at customs told me very politely that they couldn't let me bring it into the US because they just didn't know what the hell it was :lol

Frankly I don't blame them and they were almost sorry because I had a feeling they believed me, but I would have done exactly the same thing in their place.

yeah,

after 9/11 theyve gotten overly sensitive about stuff like that unfortunately.Actually, transporting alcohol across borders has always been a touchy subject regardless which border you want to talk about (believe me I know http://spurstalk.com/forums/images/smilies/smiangel.gif). But as I said, they would have probably let me get away with it, if I hadn't pushed it with the quantity.

I should have offered to drink some of it right there to prove it wasn't toxic - or would that have proven it?

I've said it in the past that I would love to be able to bring a whole Slovenian Prosciuto ham for you guys to try - THAT is truly awsome. But there is no way to bring meat over - that is a much bigger no no, for obvious reasons.

LJ and I had a debate over this, because the original plan was geared towards the Spurs playing on Sunday. I had a backup plan if they played on Saturday, but it f...ked other things so much it wasn't a very good one - but it was doable. And then they gave us the afternoon game :flipoff

I did IAH -> Kori&LJ last time in 3 hours 45 minutes so with a bit of luck...

Slomo, why not just buy a one-way SW ticket to SA from Houston and rent the car after you get there?

Slomo
04-21-2006, 10:18 PM
Slomo, why not just buy a one-way SW ticket to SA from Houston and rent the car after you get there?I'm not sure, but according to my travel agent it has something to do with a different airport in Houston which means I don't gain much (if anything).

But I'll look into it right now, maybe she was wrong.

Melmart1
04-21-2006, 10:25 PM
SW goes into both Hobby and Bush now, if I am not mistaken. You wouldn't necessarily have to switch airports. But even if you did, with flight time and travel between both, you are still cutting your trip time by more than half. Since you are only gonna catch two games, it would probably be worth the extra investment so that you don't miss anything.

There is a SW flight out of Bush that leaves at 2:30 and you would get in an hour before the game starts. Book it, dan-o.

edit: In my experience, SW flights from Houston are almost always early. It says 50 minutes travel time, but its usually more like 35-40. They are really good at being on time/early.

Since you are only gonna catch two games, it would probably be worth the extra investment so that you don't miss anything.Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm evaluating this by looking at a map - I don't know Houston that well). But if I land at 12:14 I can be out of the terminal at 12:45 (luggage pick up) at best. Taxi ride to Hobby (Ichecked they only offer flight from there on their website) what 30 minutes?. Checkin and security control I'm ready at roughly 2 pm. THe first flight that is available is at 2:35 and lands at 3:25, which nput me out of the terminal at 3:50 and in my rental car at 4:15 which leaves me 15 minutes for the drive to the AT&T centre.

And you'll probably agree some of my estimations are very optimistic (and only if the all the planes are on time).

It's not the investment I'm worried it's more about complicating further something that is already not ideal.

If there was a continental flight available from IAH it would actually work, but like that I'm not sure.

Edit: or any other flight out of IAH for tha matter...

Melmart1
04-21-2006, 10:37 PM
Damn, I thought that flight was out of Bush. You are right, it could complicate things further if you hit traffic trying to get to Hobby.

But hey I have another 30 minutes at my disposal before I go out for dinner, if you have any other good suggestions I'm game. After that it's going to be too late for me to change anything.

Things we were discussing:

About the Coyote- looks like we were all wrong. Kersey was the culprit.

http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/articles/2005/03/16/spurs_run_past_timberwolves_89_73/

Notes:@ San Antonio is 2-2 since Ginobili strained his groin March 8 vs. New Jersey. ... After 66 games last season, the Timberwolves were 46-20. ... Horry's previous high as a member of the Spurs was 14, which he reached twice last season. ... Garnett, shooting about 50 percent this season, has gone 9-for-31 (29 percent) in the two games against the Spurs. ... Referee Jess Kersey angrily ejected The Coyote, San Antonio's mascot, in the third quarter for being on the court during play.

Also

I looked up that article I have that mentioned Rasho's family. I saved it but not the link or author's name.

But according to it, Rasho's dad is 6-6 and his mom is 6-0. They didn't say how tall his sister is but said Sho comes from a tall family so I assume that includes her.
