The Texans have apparently taken another big step in making Reggie Bush the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft.

The team and Bush's agent exchanged contract proposals for the first time and are hoping to reach an agreement before the draft, ESPN reported Friday.

Since the Texans have the No. 1 overall pick, the team is free to negotiate with any of the prospects in the draft.

Friday's happenings followed Thursday's talks in which the two sides discussed contract details for the first time, ESPN reported.

It makes sense, but I still think Reggie Bush is going to be closer to Desmond Howard than to Gale Sayers. IOW, he'll have some impact as a returner but not as much as a runner.

Desmond Howard was coming out as a reciever. Bush may not end up being Sayers but he will be an above average RB for a long time.

It's the right one. No one's offered them a godfather deal for that pick. The coaching change and free agency have made it worth their while to pick Bush. If Capers was still the HC, I would be hoping they went in another direction. But they have the talent now to fill out the offense around Bush...and they have a HC who knows what he's doing.

HOUSTON - The Houston Texans will take Southern Cal running back Reggie Bush or North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams with the first pick in Saturday's draft, general manager Charley Casserly said Wednesday.

The Texans dashed the hopes of University of Texas fans everywhere who have been clamoring for the team to pick Vince Young, a Houston native who led the Longhorns to a Rose Bowl victory over Bush and USC.

"We came to the conclusion that to draft a quarterback, whether it be Vince Young, Matt Leinart or Jay Cutler, was not the best thing for this football team," Casserly said. "The best thing for this football team was to use the first pick in this draft to add a premier player at another position."

Casserly said that part of their decision-making process involved contacting other teams to see if there was any interest in trading for their pick.

"Right now we have nobody interested in that first pick, so we have gone ahead and begun negotiations with two players," Casserly said.
