AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas sophomore point guard Daniel Gibson said Tuesday that he plans to declare for the NBA draft but will not hire an agent, meaning he could keep his college eligibility.

"Playing in the NBA has always been a dream for me since I was a little kid," Gibson said in a statement released by the university. "If I'm comfortable with where I feel I'll be drafted, I'll stay in the draft. If not, I'll be back."

Texas coach Rick Barnes said he has no problem with Gibson exploring his status for the June 28 draft.

Gibson ranked third on the team in scoring (13.4) and set a school record for most three-point field goals made in a season (101). Texas won a school-record 30 games last season and reached the Atlanta Regional final of the NCAA tournament before losing to LSU.

Gibson is the third Longhorn to declare for this year's draft, joining LaMarcus Aldridge and P.J. Tucker. Only Aldridge is hiring an agent, making him ineligible to return.

Yeah, I figured he would see just like PJ but I expect them both back.

He won't be coming back. With Abrams and Augustine there, he won't be getting any run at the point, which is the position he'll be at in the pros.

And if he comes back, he has to explain why he's the 3rd string PG behind a sophomore and a fish next year, not exactly the ticket to draft day millions.

Dude's gone.

So you're saying he's entering the draft because he's not good enough to be a first string point guard at texas?

Makes sense to me. Go now when your status is at its best. If he doesn't start next year, that leaves him undrafted. At least now he might get some 2nd rd consideration.

Doubtful. Texas is gonna be so young next year. They're going from the best texas team ever to the greenest.

We'll be like Kansas, except our players on the floor won't be ultra long, ultra athletic, lob passing guards on speed.

I don't know what is but I think AJ will have the greenlight to freestroke it
