two days later and the series is over that is pretty funny.

It might generally seem insignificant, but it could end up being very important. If Dirk picks up 2 more flagrant fouls at any point during the playoffs, he'll be automatically suspended for the following game.

That is fucking bullshit. Fuck Stu Jackson and their power trips.

The league is putting up with no bullshit this post-season.

According to DMN: Dirk's flagrant was reduced to a personal foul. wtf?

I thought they downgraded it? hmm. well, it was a dumb flagrant anyways.

^hmmm. that's what I saw too. posted at same time.

Dirk's reprieve

Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki's flagrant foul against Pau Gasol in Game 3 was reduced to a personal foul by the NBA office after film of the play was reviewed, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Nowitzki will not be fined and will not be assessed any points. Players are suspended if they accrue more than four flagrant-foul penalties in the playoffs.

So I'm not sure if it was upgraded or downgraded.

Kind of weird.

I just posted what I found on nba.com. I didn't go corroborate it. Since the story was dated today, I ran with it. If it's wrong, lock the thread.

Yeah, two different stories coming out.

I don't know if it's wrong. It would be odd if the press release on NBA.com is the wrong one.

I agree; just acknowledging that I didn't do much due diligence before posting the story and that if my post contained an erroneous story, I'm responsible for that happening.

It seems odd that that kind of news would get such little play.

Nowitzki hit with fine, flagrant foul

06:02 PM CDT on Wednesday, May 3, 2006

By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News

Dirk Nowitzki was fined $15,000 and assessed a flagrant foul, penalty two, for making unnecessary and excessive contact with Memphis' Pau Gasol during the second quarter of the Mavericks' 102-76 win in Game 4 of the first-round series.

On the play, the Mavericks had the ball and Nowitzki was making a move across the top of the lane and ran into Gasol, swinging his arm and catching Gasol in the neck and shoulder.

The play was called an offensive foul during the game.

In Game 3 of the series, Nowitzki was called for a flagrant foul, penalty one, on a blocked shot, but the league later reduced that call to a common foul.

Looks like the stories are both right.

One was for Game 3, the other Game 4.

Two different calls in two different games. I see now.

Thanks, Johnny, for finding that story.

According to the link Kori gave, the foul that got downgraded happened in Game 3. According to the link on NBA.com, the foul that got upgraded happened in Game 4. So going by what I've found, these were two separate fouls here; one downgraded, the other upgraded.

Edit: DAMN! You guys beat me to it.

Based on Stern's logic Manu should be suspended for flailing his arms and elbows than.

You mean suspended for flopping?

Flopping and hurting someone. Elbow against Artest and injuring Barbosa. The list goes on.

You know, the way players have been getting fined and/or suspended in the first round alone, I think there should be a vBookie on how many players will be fined and/or suspended each round. Like, once the Conference Semis begin, a vBookie for how many players will get fined/suspended during that round. Then Conference Finals, same thing. Looks like the Madness doesn't end in March. :lol

Dallas’ Nowitzki Fined and Foul Upgraded

Two for making unnecessary and excessive contact with Pau Gasol of the Memphis Grizzlies,
That's the norm for the NBA especially in the trenches. I would call that an excessive and unecessary upgrade.

Are they talking about Gasol getting floored while fighting for position? That's a slap on the wrist in the hard-foul dominion known as the playoffs. Not to mention that I've seen far worse - Kwame bodyslamming Diaw to the floor was 10x worse because it was malicious, Tim Thomas undercutting Kwame (which Kobe protested and led to his ejection), Haywood powerbombing LeBron, etc.

Geez
