After the debacle and disaster of 2001, I, along with a few others were AMPED about signing Bowen. With Sean gone, we lacked that premier perimeter defender, and it SHOWED. I figured the 30 YO Bowen was a good 2-3 year plugin. Boy, was I wrong. Bowen has been rock solid for 5 seasons, making 4 All NBA defensive teams (2 second team, 2 firsts) and an expected one this year, shooting over 40% outside the arc in over 1000 attempts over the 5 year period, and winning the 3 point crown in 2002-2003 at over 44%.

Some of his accomplishments:

5 consecutive All NBA defensive team appearances (one 2nd team w/ Miami) and probably one this year.

Just the fourth Spur to earn All-Defensive honors three-or-more times joining David Robinson (nine selections), Tim Duncan (seven) and Alvin Robertson (four)

Joins group of nine swingmen who have earned All-Defensive Team honors in four-or-more straight seasons: Kobe Bryant (‘00-04), Don Chaney (‘72-75), Doug Christie (‘01-04), Walt Frazier (‘69-75), John Havlicek (‘69-76), Michael Jordan (‘88-93), Scottie Pippen (‘90-00) and Alvin Robertson (‘86-91)

Thank you Bruce for being the ultimate team player and ultimate Spur.

And he somehow now can finish with his left hand in the lane during crunchtime of a playoff game. :smokin

He works really hard but it's still crazy to see his hard work paying off for him at this age.

Isn't he also leading the league in consecutive games played? Bruce = IRON MAN

And let's not forget, he's on the '08 Olympic Team too. Look out Manu!

"ultimate Spur" <> best ever. Sorry you took it that way. It means he epitomizes what the organization stands for, in every way.

You forgeot to mention that Bruce signed here for the minimum while turning down a full MLE offer from Portland in 2001. The guy's game has improved every year he's been here. I remember I used to cringe when he put the ball on the floor, but these last couple of years it has become a great weapon for this team. Bruce is so much better a player than he was when he came here in 2001. His hard work really shows, and it's the reason his number will join David's, Tim's, Sean's, Ice's, Si's, Johnny's, and eventually AJ's in the rafters of the AT&T Center.

And also opted out of the last year of his contract in 2004(?) and re-signed for a lesser starting salary so that the Spurs would have room for Manu.

Bruce will go down as one of the best Spurs ever. In a quiet way he is the backbone of what the Spurs are all about nowadays.

Now hopefully the Spurs can advance so he can pick on someone his own size. :)

Bruce Bowen embodies everything about the Spurs. A great player who never seems to get the respect he deserves. A defensive specialist who gets hot offensively sometimes. A solid, educated guy. I sure hope he gets DPOY this year.

And Barry...

You want to talk about a team player? Resigning for less to allow the team to pursue title winning help and ending up with a backup making 2 million a year more than you do...

And it's never been brought up a single time by Bruce or anyone with the Spurs...

The Spurs are lucky...

Yeah, his shooting has improved by a lot this year. He is making his jumpers pretty consistently as well as his free throws.

Did Bruce ever get that PR degree? I remember reading that he was going to college for it last year.

I think he's still going to class. One of my co-workers said she saw him on campus...

Dunno though.
