I disqualify "trace" of 0.1 inch as "rain".

the heavy stuff in the hill country west of Austin is on path that would take it north of SA.

There's heavy stuff well to southwest of SA, coming up from the valley, but who knows if it will make to SA?

A pincer movement. down from the n/w, and up from s/w, weird stuff.

MannyIsGod
05-04-2006, 10:33 PM
70 thousand feet high storm tops. The higher the tops the higher the rain drops get lifted before they drop. Bigger updrafts make bigger storms. Bigger storms usually are much stronger. The higher the hail goes the bigger it can get as it gets a lot of time under the freezing mark.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/bamboozool2/999_temp/temp/rain_2006_05_05.gif

Some serious rain, 1" to 3"!!!, did make it to SA.

SW, wind isn't water. In these last 10 months of drought, I've had plenty of wind, shredding my foliage, and lightening storms that didn't produce more than a "trace" 0.1" of rain at my house.

These radar maps, esp the animated ones, on radar.weather.gov are very accurate, to the pixel level.

On the above image, I live just on the s/w edge of the "a" in San Antonio.

When I'm getting rain, the radar map shows me getting rain.

If that point s/w of the "a" doesn't get doesn't get colored as rain, I haven't received rain.

Manny came up lucky in OT. Finally hit a couple big shots! :)

The Salado Creek at 410/Los Patios is WAY up this morning.

We were scrambling around trying to turn our garage into a 2-car garage again...which is a pain in the ass when part of the reason it's not is because of 3 bookcases...:bang

We had the same 2-3 inch hail warnings out of 4x4 Doppler..they were pinpointing the locations about a mile away from the house! Thankfully we didn't get any of that crap...but we did get 60-90 seconds of some dumping a bucket of marble-sized stuff on us. Don't think there was any car damage...but there are oak clippings all over the place.

MannyIsGod
05-05-2006, 07:31 AM
You can't look at the radar pinpointed movement of the storms because the individual cells die within half an hour. You have to look at the trends to see where they were building. It was obvious that line was going to come into SA.

I sat here telling Jess for hours before it happend that those 2 lines were going to have their outflows meet right over SA. When that happens, the air only has one direction it can go which is UP. Thats why those storm tops were so damn high. When the 2 gust fronts colide they both transfer horizontal energy into vertical energy.

Round 2 is coming today, but it should'nt be as severe. This could be a weekend of drougth relief though. And that would be a damn good thing

"the individual cells die within half an hour."

Those radar images seem to be sampled and udpated about every 6 minutes. In their one-hour animation loop, there are 10 images, fine enough sampling for sufficiently accurate picture, esp the animations showing the movement of rain.

MANNY MANNY times I've correlated the radars pixels and rainfall levels with what I see in my yard.

As the the storm was bearing down to glance along the n/e edge of Bexar county, there was some stuff coming up form the valley, but that pooped out, and storm hit north of Bexar county head-on.

Manny how true is this statement:

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL SATURDAY MORNING...There will be another chance today of strong to severe t-storms, some will be capable of producing large hail and strong winds... A frontal boundry should be draped across the area Saturday so t-storm chances will continue... A slight chance for t-storms will be in the forecast for next week...High temps by mid week will be hot in the mid 90's with a slight chance of t-storms... Hope you have a great day---- Paul Mireles

"what's that noise". His GF said "oh just an airplane"

About 5 minutes later it was getting louder. I was like "hey .. that noise is getting louder man wtf"...

It was like a train... I was like oh fuck I think it's a tornado. We looked up and could see a funnel cloud but it was not touching down and as soon as it started it was gone the sound poof gone too. At it's loudest when we started running it was like standing right behind a 747... loud as hell. I thought we where gonners for a second.

Scared the shit out of us...

If anyone is still up, we'll get some rain and lightning in the next hour. Nothing severe, just a lot of rain, some wind, and lightning.

Sometimes when a tornado forms, it wraps the rain around and there are rain "bands" with perios of no rain inbetween. This is kinda what gives off the hook echo.

Well, the radar is saying there is shear in the storms right over me right now and there was just a banding effect of the rain.

I may end up in Oz.

Yep.

Boy I tell you what, we got some of them dang ol' hail stones comin' down out in my yard. Mmmmm-hmmmmm. Dang ole-dang ole crazy man. Crazy, that's what it is.

On that note, I really like Glenn Glazer. His little asides are actually funny because it seems who ever the anchor is doesn't get them half the time, and he has been quick to basically "oops, I fucked up" in the past. Unlike other's that only acknowledge their weather prediction skills when they're right.

It's not seeing the cloud. It was the freight train / standing behind 747 at takeoff sound. It was a tornado IMO*.

More oak-tree clippings in my yard. At this rate I won't have any leaves on the trees by the end of the week...

dude, olmos golf course is wasted.

So is one of the fields at Alamo Heights Little League ... it was under a foot of water Friday evening, I can't imagine what it looks like this morning.

They had scheduled a clean-up day today, looking for volunteers to get it cleaned out before the playoffs start next week ... I don't know if they'll even be able to do that after last night/this morning. :(

Radar shows some new shit popping near Junction, but that's heading almost due East, and looks like it will miss. However, as always, the shit does pop up out of nowhere. The forecast is for scattered showers. If anything pops a bit further South, we may see some more activity.

^That's not a good omen.

I was taking a test once during a rainstorm. It was in the ballroom of an old hotel and each of us had own own table set up. In the middle of it there was this giant crash. We looked up and one of the ceiling panels had rotted off and a giant stream of water was coming down on one poor dude's table.

I thought, no matter what, I wasn't going to get the worst score on that test.

My downstairs neighbors certainly did not enjoy the extent of this rain. I woke up at 7am yesterday morning to their screams of "noooooooooooo" as their apartment got totally flooded. As of this afternoon they were still sitting around outside as the carpet and floorboards of their apartement were being ripped out. I really feel bad for them.

Glenn, Steve, and the one on 13 (whatever his name is) were all saying it would be lucky if the storms north of Junction made it down tihs way. Most likely they're moving east towards Austin, and will probably die because they'll lose the heat of the day (but isn't it night?) We should be on Spurstalk Weather watch tomorrow appperantly with a low coming in from the mountains of Mexico on Tuesday night into Wed.

Oh thte line is definetly going to build into San Antonio. Lucky my ass. These lines always backbuild to the southwest then take amore SE course as they form into an MCS. It happens over and over. These guys annoy me because they never look at trends they just look at a radar loop.

Anyhow, it'll rain here before 5am. Book it.

I am happy to be the backup forecaster to the Spurstalk Weather Alert Team or SWAT. I don't like all the media attention.

Manny and the SWAT:

What about Wendsday???

At 1st it was going to be a cloud free, rainfree high of 98 day. Perfect for grillign ribs and chillign at the pool.
Which is what we are planing to do.

Now it looks as tho it will be part cloudy high of 99 with 20% chance of rain. Ever since those T-storms decided to include tusday too..

So I come here for clarification and reassurnace. Yes I know a 20% chance of precip is really a jack shit way for forcasters to cover thier ass..... but JUSt becasue we are down at the pool trying to grill you know that 20% is going to hit me.

So whats up for Wendsday?

Vashner
