No other player on the Phoenix squad last season struggled to much in the playoffs in the system. Amare is as much a product of Nash as Marion is and he did fine. Nash himself does fine and he's in the same system.

Marion also was invisible in 2003 when Phoenix had Marbury, so I'm not sure that's correct. I just don't get it. They don't run plays for him normally and he gets his numbers from fast breaks, putbacks, broken plays etc it's not like he is a shooter who goes cold in the playoffs.

I just don't understand, his game doesn't really coincide with being the type of game which should struggle in the playoffs because it is based on hard work, a nose for the ball and athleticism.

I remember him being owned by Bowen last year and everyone in the media was bitching about his play. The result: he played even worse.

I think ducks' explanation is part of it, too about the salary cap.

But shit, they only got second round picks for him, I think. If you're going to trade away talent, get something back, don't give it away for free.

But shit, they only got second round picks for him, I think. If you're going to trade away talent, get something back, don't give it away for free.

Perhaps the Spurs didn't see talent in him? Combine that with them thinking there may not be anyone left at #28 that they liked enougd along with the salary cap issues and I think we have figured out an answer.

Question - Did Spurs get 2nd round picks for THAT year, or was it for upcoming years? Perhaps who the Spurs actually wanted was going to be available late 2nd round anyway, so why use a 1st round pick on them and guarentee salary when you can nab him with a 2nd round pick and get an extra pick as well? I can't remember who the Spurs drafted that year though, so I'm not sure if that theory works out. Was it Romain Sato or somebody like that?

He did great against the Mavs last season. He sucked against the Spurs...but in his defense he had Bowen on him so it's understandable.

I know what you're saying, but some might say he's mentally soft. Kenyon Martin is even more physical than Marion, but he's not exactly a prime time performer either.

Part of the issue with Marion, too, is he never really has plays run for him. He depends on garbage and things in transition. The more time they're in the half court, the less likely he is to get a decent look.

Perhaps the Spurs didn't see talent in him? Combine that with them thinking there may not be anyone left at #28 that they liked enougd along with the salary cap issues and I think we have figured out an answer. But it doesn't matter whether the Spurs saw talent in him. Phoenix wanted him and thought he was a first round pick, so the Spurs should have demanded equivalent value for that. If the Spurs didn't actually think he was going to pan out, then that's just a bonus. Why do the Suns any favors?

That's not the first time, either. When the Spurs drafted Leon Smith for Dallas, the same thing happened. You think the Spurs are ever going to get another team to use their first round pick to draft a player the Spurs want, and then trade him for a couple of second round picks?

The only time the Spurs didn't get taken was when they drafted John Salmons and got Speedy for him.

Was it Romain Sato or somebody like that?Actually, it appears that the Spurs got a conditional #1 pick, which they traded to New York (in addition to their #1 pick for this year) in the Malik/Nazr trade. That pick turned into David Lee. http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/images/smilies/smipctoss.gif So, never mind, they did get equivalent value for Barbosa. They just tossed it away later.
