Pro basketball player Juwan Howard is facing charges he stole an expensive pair of sunglasses from a South Beach store.

Miami Beach police told The Miami Herald they'll seek a warrant for Howard's arrest today.

Howard, who plays forward with the Houston Rockets, was at Eye Q Optical at 760 Ocean Dr. on Saturday, trying on several sunglasses.

He paid $192 for a pair, according to a Miami Beach police report.

As he was paying with his credit card, Howard pocketed a pair of $1,695 Cartier shades and walked off, according to police.

A surveillance camera recorded the scene, police said. The 6-9, 230-pound forward owns a condo on Brickell Key and a home in the Coral Gables area.

The Rockets finished 34-48 and out of the playoffs. A call to the Houston Rockets media relations department was not immediately returned on Thursday morning.

Herald staff writer David Ovalle contributed to this report.

"I'm aware of the situation and have spoken to my attorney," Howard said in a statement. "I will vigorously defend myself and (I) am confident I'll be cleared of these baseless charges."

The owner of Eye Q Optical in South Beach told Miami television stations that he has a surveillance tape showing Howard take a pair of sunglasses, though he has not allowed media outlets see the tape.

"We are aware and will continue to monitor the situation," Rockets spokesman Nelson Luis said. "We understand Juwan is cooperating fully and is proclaiming his innocence."

That's not even counting the money the Michigan boosters gave him.

Miami Beach police said that when they reviewed the surveillance tape, Howard could be seen pocketing the sunglasses when the clerk's eyes were averted.

I don't blame him though, if you have the chance to steal something like that, you might as well. Free shit is awesome, regardless if the thing you are stealing is worth $2 or $2,000. He just was an idiot about it, or had bad luck.

No shit. Shaq can flash his Miami PD special reserve badge or whatever and haul Juwan into the slammer.

I said this elsewhere, and I'll say it again here:
unless he's got Shawn Kemp sized child support payments, there is NO justification for him to be pinching sunglasses, let alone anything!
Maybe he needs the $$$ to pay the doctor to keep up on his sexually transmitted disease innoculations.

Other than the standard statement of "Bwahahahahahahahahahahaha...," I have one statement.

Boy, wouldn't a whole arena of Spurs fans wearing sunglasses be a hell of a way to razz Juwan next season?

maybe time to trade in a few of those Lambos, Astons, 911's. Nothing like owning $250 000 automobiles and swiping $1600 glasses. Like they say... you can take the kid out of the hood, but you cant take the hood out of the kid.
