AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (Ticker) -- For "Big Shot Rob," this may have been the biggest shot of all.

Robert Horry drilled a 3-pointer with 5.8 seconds left in overtime to give the San Antonio Spurs an nerve-jangling 96-95 victory over the Detroit Pistons in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.

With control of the series teetering with each possession, Horry added yet another memorable clip to his career-long postseason hightlight reel and tilted the title heavily toward the Spurs, who head home with a 3-2 lead and the security of the next two games on their floor.

Known as "Big Shot Rob" for clutch shooting that has given him five championship rings, Horry scored all 21 of his points in the final 17-plus minutes, shaking off a painful shoulder injury.

"It's the playoffs, man," Horry said. "If you don't get excited about the playoffs, you don't even to deserve to be playing basketball."

"What their physicality did was it really pushed Duncan off the block. It compressed our perimeter guys in the post. And it was too crowded for him to do anything," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "That's why you saw us go to David so much tonight. And David came up huge, he was a monster."

Robinson and Joe Smith, two of the league's most mild-mannered players, tangled just before halftime, and Mario Elie, who was in the trainer's room for stitches above his right eye thanks to an Anthony Peeler elbow, was whooping and hollering.

"I was watching that on TV and I said, 'Is that David Robinson on our team ready to fight?'" Elie said. "I love that. David's got to show some emotion. You know guys can't just bully him around. This guy's got pride and he's strong.

"It was good to see him react like that," Elie added. "A guy threatens your manhood and you've got to step up. That's what Dave did and it sort of got him fired up and he came out and had a terrific second half for us."

Robinson and Peeler were hesitant to talk about the tussle.

"It's the playoffs, let's put it that way, it's playoff time," Robinson said. "I responded the way I needed to."

The Spurs, the top seed in the Western Conference, won the series 3-1 by taking Games 3 and 4 at Target Center, where Robinson had 17 points and 18 rebounds Thursday night.

PHOENIX (AP) -- Tony Parker found his shot, and the San Antonio Spurs find themselves back in control of their first-round playoff series against the Phoenix Suns.

Parker, Stephen Jackson and others on Tim Duncan's supporting cast made the Suns pay for their defensive strategy in a 99-86 victory Friday night.

Parker, 3-for-20 in the first two games of the series, made 12 of 21 shots -- most of them from long range -- for a career playoff-high 29 points.

"Tony Parker's been important to us all year,'' Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "When he scores, we're really tough.''

The Suns' only lead was 2-0 as San Antonio turned up the physical intensity to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Game 4 is Sunday night in Phoenix.

"It's very frustrating to lose the game period, let alone the homecourt advantage,'' the Suns' Stephon Marbury said. "But we've been in this situation, so it's back to the drawing board. We've been giving those guys a steady diet. We have to come up with something different.''

Parker came out shooting, slump or no slump.

"I took the same shots the first two games, it's just today it went in,'' he said. "I found a good rhythm. When you make your first couple of shots, you feel pretty good.''

San Antonio, which won the 1999 title, hosts the Eastern Conference champion New Jersey Nets in Game 1 of NBA Finals 2003 at the SBC Center on Wednesday.

It will be the first NBA Finals matchup between two former ABA teams.

With Tim Duncan struggling and Tony Parker playing with a stomach flu, the Spurs looked flat and trailed by as many as 15 points in the third quarter and 71-58 after a jumper by Nick Van Exel of Dallas with 10:53 to play.

But after Duncan made 1-of-2 free throws 13 seconds later, the Spurs' wing players got hot from the outside. Manu Ginobili nailed a three-pointer and Stephen Jackson made back-to-back shots from beyond the arc to pull San Antonio within 71-68 with 8:53 left.

"Stephen kept us from falling down the hill totally," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "He showed good choices. He made some threes, penetrated and pulled up, did a good job in that sense. He was very important in keeping us rolling."

"That's just me, I am aggressive," Jackson said. "If they are going to take away Tim, then someone else is going to have to score, so I just stepped up and took the shots with confidence, and I was able to knock them down tonight."

The 37-year-old Kerr nailed three three-pointers as the Spurs scored 23 straight points in the fourth quarter to defeat the Dallas Mavericks, 90-78, and advance to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999.

Anyways, your opinion was not solicited. I'm not quite sure why you feel the need to come in here and troll for attention. I'm guessing it's because you get none elsewhere.

Sorry to rain on anyone's parade, but I was digging around for some history of my own, and found some bad news, if history holds up.

1981: Rockets (40-42) take a 2-1 series lead, finish off the Spurs in 7.
1982: Lakers (57-25) take a 2-0 series lead, finish off the Spurs in 4.
1983: Lakers (58-24) take a 2-1 series lead, finish off Spurs in 6.
1985: Nuggets (52-30) take a 2-1 series lead, finish off the Spurs in 5.
1986: Lakers (62-20) take a 2-0 series lead, finish off the Spurs in 3.
1988: Lakers (62-20) take 2-0 series lead, finish off the Spurs in 3.
1990: Blazers (59-23) take a 2-0 series lead, finish off the Spurs in 7.
1991: Warriors (44-38) take a 2-1 series lead, finish off the Spurs in 4.
1992: Suns (53-29) take a 2-0 series lead, finish off the Spurs in 3.
1993: Suns (62-20) take a 2-0 series lead, finish off the Spurs in 6.
1994: Jazz (53-29) take a 2-1 series lead, finish off the Spurs in 4.
1995: Rockets (47-35) take a 2-0 series lead, finish the Spurs off in 6.
1996: Jazz (55-27) take a 2-0 series lead, finish off the Spurs in 6.
1998: Jazz (62-20) take a 2-0 series lead, finish off the Spurs in 5.
2000: Suns (53-23) take a 2-1 series lead, and finished off the Spurs in 4.
2001: Lakers (56-26) take a 2-0 series lead, and finish off the Spurs in 4.
2002: Lakers (58-24) take a 2-1 series lead, and finish off the Spurs in 5.
2003: Suns (44-38) take a 1-0 series lead, and Spurs win in 6.
2004: Lakers (56-26) take a 3-2 series lead, and finish off the Spurs in 6.
2005: Nuggets (49-33) take a 1-0 series lead, and Spurs win in 6.
2006: Mavericks (60-22) take a 2-1 series lead...????

You'll notice that the Spurs have never come back to advance when they have a deficit this late in the series.

Keep jerking each other off with memories of "what was" rather than facing "what is" right in front of you.

Celtics fans wish Larry Bird was back, too.

When the Pistons faced the Nets three postseasons ago, there were a lot of fans that talked like you do. The Pistons had held the Nets to 58 points in game one, and had out-scored them 61-34 in the second half of game two. A team with that much experience as the Nets had combined with the mental edge they held over the Pistons, clawed all the way back to take a 3-2 series lead.

The Houston Rockets in 1995 came back from 3-1 series deficits twice. THe Pistons were down 2-1 to the Pacers, 3-2 to the Heat, 2-0 to the Spurs, and 3-2 to the Spurs to rally each time, with exception to game seven of last year's Finals.

All three examples I mentioned, didn't have homecourt advantage when they were rallying.

In the words of Rudy Tomjanovich "Never underestimate the heart of a Champion." Until the Spurs are dead, don't dance on their grave. It has a tendency to rally teams that have an ultimate belief in the ability to be better than any of their competition.

Hey, you might want to tone down the Rodman references. At least Dallas tried him out as an FA and didn't give up a guy like Sean Elliott to get the Worm's services.
